Chapter 18 - The Rest of The Truth

The rain's drumming softened, but the tension between them only grew sharper. Nicki's breath hitched as she began.

"It wasn't just an accident that night," she said, her voice low and deliberate. "Your father… he was meeting someone. Someone who wanted him gone."

Noah's brow furrowed. "Meeting who?"

"Lucas Fiero," she whispered. The name landed like a gunshot in Noah's mind.

He knew Lucas—a man his father had once called a business partner but treated more like an enemy. A man who smiled without warmth, whose words always carried a hidden blade.

"You're telling me Lucas set it up?" Noah asked, his voice rising.

"No," Nicki shook her head. "Lucas planned it, but he didn't pull the trigger. I… helped him make sure your father got into that car, at that time, on that road."

Noah stepped back, as if her words physically pushed him away. "You helped him? And you never told me?"

"I was sixteen!" she shot back, her voice trembling. "And I thought… I thought I was saving you. I thought if your father was gone, you'd be safe. I didn't know Lucas would turn on me too."

Her hands were shaking now, and she clenched them into fists to hide it.

"Why tell me this now?" Noah demanded.

"Because Lucas isn't done," she said, looking directly into his eyes. "And the next person he wants… is you."

A distant rumble of thunder rolled over the city, as if nature itself warned them of what was coming.
