The Covington Group headquarters loomed like a gleaming monolith against the morning sky. Lyra stepped out of the car, adjusting her navy blazer as she walked toward the entrance.
The security guard nodded at her with recognition. "Good morning, Ms. Moreau."
"Morning, Atticus," she replied with a small smile.
The grand lobby bustled with employees rushing to start their day. Lyra headed straight for the elevators, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
As she approached the elevator bank, a chorus of whispers caught her attention. A group of employees huddled near the water cooler, their voices carrying just enough for her to catch fragments.
"...that intern who stole research..."
"...can't believe she's still allowed in the building..."
Lyra slowed her pace, hovering near a large potted plant. She pretended to check her phone while eavesdropping.
