Chapter 2 - 2

📍Four Years Earlier

We're staring at each other.

For a long time.

Deeply.

And all I can think is… how lucky I am.

Out of billions of people on this planet — I met him.

A guy who loves me.

Who gets me without a word.

Who truly wants what's best for me…

And most of all — who makes me deeply happy.

He's dangerously sexy in that black hoodie, those shorts showing just enough of his muscular legs, his messy hair, and that little earring catching the sunlight.

That earring? Total bad boy vibes.

But I know the softness behind it.

I look at him, and it hits me — I might've found what most people spend their whole life searching for.

— Babe, you okay? Wanna eat something else? Are you cold?

— I'm good, I'm good…

I smile.

— I just need a kiss. Nothing more. Just that, and I'm whole.

He leans in slowly, with that softness that melts me every time.

His fingers brush my cheek.

His lips touch mine.

And suddenly… the world stops.

I taste pure happiness.

His tongue.

His scent.

The warmth of his hands on my skin.

My heart is pounding.

And for once, I'm not scared of it.

— So? Still missing something to be happy?

he whispers.

— I'm already happy,

I say, truly meaning it.

With him, I'm whole.

At peace.

In love like never before.

And deep down… I know.

If there's one man I'll love like this in my entire life — it's him.

Him or no one.

Him… or emptiness.

— Tell me, what do you want in the future?

— I wanna live well. Have kids. A house. An incredible wife — you — and a car. Obviously.

So, what color do you want our house to be?

— White.

— Then it'll be a white house.

— With a little garden… and a tiny dog.

— Garden, dog, white house. You wanna work or stay home? Just so I know how hard I gotta hustle.

I laugh softly.

This idiot.

He talks about the future like it's simple, like it's already written.

Me, his wife.

Him, my husband.

Kids.

A life together.

We promised each other forever.

We swore we'd be the last ones. The only ones.

I looked him dead in the eyes, and I just knew —

he'll either be the boy I marry…

or my biggest heartbreak.

No in-between.

No lukewarm.

All or nothing.

— I wanna work. I wanna become a lawyer.

— Damn… Mrs. Lawyer. My wife's a badass. The world better watch out.

— Mmm… I don't even know if I'll make it. It's just a dream for now.

— You'll get there. I know you will.

He looks at me like I can do anything.

And maybe, with him — I can.

— So why do you wanna be a lawyer?

— Because… I can.

— For real?

— There's too much injustice in this world. Too many people suffering in silence.

I know I can't save everyone…

But the ones I can help, I will.

I want them to know they're not alone.

That I'm here.

He smiles.

That smile ruins me.

With him, I'm not just a girl.

I'm a woman.

A fighter.

A purpose.

— I love you, Devon.

— I love you, Rubies.

And everything fades.

The world could collapse, and I wouldn't care.

He's here.

I'm here.

And that's enough.

This was our love.

The kind you only feel once.

The kind that leaves marks.

That burns and lights you up.

The kind you never forget.

The kind people still talk about, years later, staring into space.

Because we loved like we breathed.

And that…

That's real love.
