Chapter 63 - Why do you keep asking why?

The memory tore back into his mind so violently that the glass he was holding slipped from his hand and shattered. He thought he had only dreamed it, that maybe it had been some horrible nightmare. But no. Reality was far crueler. Savannah had died that day. His precious little sister had taken her last breath while he stood helpless.

Tears spilled down his face without him realizing. He wiped them away quickly, but the sobs followed anyway. Grabbing the bottle of rum, he drank straight from it, desperate to drown the memory.

He could never escape his past. Every time it returned, it twisted him into something darker, something he hated. He wanted to end everything, but he could not even bring himself to do it.

The tears had not yet dried when the kitchen door opened. Mathew stepped in.

Kieran quickly wiped his eyes with his palms, snatched up Savannah's photo from the table, and slipped it into his pocket before Mathew noticed.
