Chapter 21 - Everything will be okay

A few months back, I had people do some recon to find my family.

My father passed about a year after I was taken. My sister had grown up in that same town. I never found out who raised her, likely Ms. Mordok.

She married a teacher. From what I could tell, they had a happy life together, two sons: Bruce and Victor.

She passed at sixty-two. Cause of death was listed as heart attack. She was gone while I was still in cryo, still a prisoner of Hydra.

Her husband followed her a few years later.

My nephews are grown now, with families of their own.

I figured it was best not to approach them. It would be strange for their long-lost aunt, who hasn't aged, to show up out of nowhere.

Besides, I doubt Jamie ever told them about me. She probably didn't remember me herself.

Still, I monitor them.

It's all I can do, make sure they're financially stable, help anonymously if they're not, ensure they aren't involved in anything dangerous.

Make sure they live happy, peaceful lives. Just like Jamie would've wanted.

Knowing she had a long and fulfilling life brought me some peace.

But it also ached.

For everything I missed.

For all the times I'm sure she needed family in her corner, and I wasn't there.

For that, I'll always be sorry, my dear little sister.

A few days had passed since the dream, and since Mira's odd words.

They still haunted me.

I'd asked her a few times what she meant, but she always gave the same reply.

She would cup my cheeks in her small hands and say softly, "Don't worry. Everything will be okay."

On the fourth day of this repeating, I was at my desk, going through documents, contracts, and blueprints for new weapons. That's when she walked into my office.

"Hey sweetie, what are you doing here? Where's Sierra?"

I glanced behind her, to see no one with her.

She stood silently for a moment in her little black tights and matching shoes, a sleeveless, knee-length green dress.

In her hands, she clutched her white teddy bear.

Then she smiled faintly.

"It's time now. Don't worry. Everything is going to be okay."

Her words confused me again. I rose and stepped toward her.

That's when I saw it, the teddy bear dropped from her hands and hit the ground.

I froze.

Her hands… were gone.

Bit by bit, her body disintegrated into dust.

I tried to run to her, but before I could, she was gone.

My eyes darted around.

My heartbeat thundered in my ears.

Tears welled, tears I hadn't shed in years.

"MIRA!!" I screamed, the sound echoing down the marble halls.

To my left, a guard stood frozen.

Then, gone. Dust.

What's happening?

Is this a nightmare?

It has to be.

I reached for her teddy bear

My hand…

It was turning to dust.

I heard Sierra's voice shout, "Ma'am, what's happening" as she ran down the hall.

Before I could answer, a chill surged through my body.

A strange peace overcame me.

And just like that… the world went dark.

And I—

The Crimson Queen.

Subject 13.

A Hydra weapon.

An experiment.

Vivian.

A mother.

A sister.

I was gone…..
