Chapter 40 - chapter 40

Author POV

Rabin's hoodie was up, his cap pulled low as he leaned against the old oak tree outside her university gates.

He had waited for this moment for months—

A single glimpse of her without screens, distance, or paparazzi.

Just her.

The girl who filled the silence between his chaotic days.

He spotted her, finally.

Walking toward him with her tote bag on one shoulder, her hair loosely tied, looking a little tired—but smiling…

Smiling.

He smiled too, under the mask.

She glanced down at her phone, thumbs tapping, and a soft giggle left her lips.

Was she texting him?

He reached for his phone, about to message—maybe even call out—

"Babe."

But then—

"Y/N!"

A voice, male.

She stopped. Turned.

And there he was—

A guy jogging toward her with a wide grin.

No mask. Confident. Familiar.

Her classmate? Her senior? Her what?

Rabin's heart clenched.

She smiled back. Too comfortably.

The guy reached out and tucked her hair behind her ear while saying something Rabin couldn't hear.

Y/N laughed.

Laughed.

The way she used to laugh beside him.

Rabin's fists clenched inside his hoodie.

He leaned deeper into the shadows, eyes glued to them.

Was he imagining things?

Was this what "pursuing your dreams" looked like?

His phone buzzed.

A message from her.

"I miss you today more than usual. You okay?"

He stared at the screen.

Then at her.

Still smiling with that guy.

He was holding a coffee.

She took it with a quiet laugh, sipped, and looked up at him with a smile—

That smile.

Bright. Warm. So effortless.

It hit Rabin like a punch.

His fingers curled inside his pockets.

That smile…

He hadn't seen that in months.

Not even on video calls. Not even in dreams.

And still, he didn't move.

Didn't call her name.

Didn't let her see the way his eyes dropped—just once—before he turned.

He walked away.

Without a word.

Without leaving a trace.

And she never knew he had come.

Tap tap tap..

"Where are you now?"

The message buzzed back.

Y/N: "I'm going to the library for research.. why?"

He stared at the screen for a moment.

His thumb hovered—typing, deleting, typing again.

What could he say?

That he was just five steps away earlier?

That he saw her smiling at another guy?

That he turned away like a coward?

No.

He inhaled deeply…

and simply typed:

Rabin: "Nothing… I miss you."

He locked his phone.

Pressed his head against the car window.

The engine was silent, but his thoughts were loud.

"I miss you"

A message too small to carry the weight of his silence.

Too late to say what he should've said when she was just a few meters away.

Rabin's POV

Maybe…

maybe I'm overthinking.

That guy could be just a classmate. A friend.

That smile—

maybe it was just polite.

But damn… it pierced something inside me.

I lean back into the car seat, staring at the soft flicker of streetlights dancing on the windshield.

She looked… happy.

Not that I want her sad.

But am I… not the reason behind that smile anymore?

I grip the steering wheel, then release it.

No.

I won't act on impulse.

I promised I wouldn't bring noise into her world.

Let her breathe.

Let her grow.

Let her have her time.

I won't meet her this time.

Not until I'm sure I'm still her peace—

Not her problem.

I drive away quietly…

with a heart a little heavier than when I came.

Rabin's POV

Two years.

I should be used to it by now.

The silence. The distance.

The fact that I go to sleep without her curled into me—her cold hands always brushing my skin like she belonged there.

The calendar mocked me this morning.

Two years.

She kept her promise.

And I kept mine—to wait.

I opened our chat, my thumbs hovering for a second before typing.

Rabin: Babe, when are you coming back?

A beat.

Y/N: I think… next month.

My heart leapt. Next month.

My mind started racing—plans, flowers, a thousand ways to welcome her back.

I typed again.

Rabin: Shall I pick you up?

A pause. Longer this time.

Then it came.

Y/N: It's okay… I can come by myself. I know you will be rushing with schedules.

I read it twice.

Three times.

"Come by myself."

"Rushing with schedules."

My jaw clenched. Not out of anger—just that ache again. That familiar hollowness.

Did I make her feel like I wouldn't make time?

Did I make her forget that I'm not the Nation's Boyfriend first—I'm hers?

Y/N's POV

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I whispered to myself, twirling around in my tiny dorm room like a teenager in love.

Because I am in love.

Not the quiet, hidden kind…

But the kind that makes your heart race even after years.

The kind that still makes your hands tremble when you hold your phone, re-reading his texts.

I'm going back next week.

Not as "Rabin's assistant."

Not the shadow behind the spotlight.

But as someone who can finally walk beside him—with my head held high.

As his equal.

And this time… I'm not just bringing back love.

I'm bringing him a gift.

Something no one else could ever give him.

A secret that's been blooming quietly within me.

I looked down at the small envelope on my table—the report. The confirmation.

I held it close to my chest, smiling through teary eyes.

Rabin… are you ready to become someone even more important than the Nation's Boyfriend?

Because you're about to become…

Author pov

The air inside the agency was buzzing—cameras clicked, pages flipped, staff scurried with tablets and coffee in hand. It was one of those days… where the entire building seemed to hold its breath.

Script Reading Day.

Rabin was back in full force—hair swept up, face unreadable, a cold aura that screamed celebrity mode: on.

He sat on the long couch beside the cast, the script open on his lap.

And beside him—uninvited, yet persistent—Raya.

Draped in designer, every move choreographed like she belonged on a runway instead of a script room.

But more than the script in her hand, her attention was glued to him.

Conference hall

The script reading was going on ..

At that moment, the door opened.

One of the staff cleared her throat.

"Everyone, please stand. The new Managing Director of the agency is here."

The room went quiet. Scripts lowered. People stood.

And as Rabin casually stood up beside Raya, hands tucked in his pockets, his eyes landed on the figure entering the room—

There, in formal wear but eyes brimming with quiet confidence… stood Y/N.

She wasn't just walking in.

She was arriving.

Not as his assistant.

But as the new Managing Director.

Every pair of eyes in the room locked on the figure stepping in with calm elegance. Heels clicking softly against the marble floor. Lanyard badge swinging with authority.

She stopped in front of the gathered artists, her eyes not betraying even the faintest flicker of emotion—

Except when they landed on him.

On Rabin.

Just for a second.

His eyes widened.

His heart? Missed a beat.

"Y/N…?" his voice was a breath, not meant to be heard.

————

Raya.

Her eyes darted between the new managing director and Rabin, disbelief twisting her face.

"That b*tch? Seriously?!" she muttered under her breath.

The agency manager, seated at the side, nearly choked on her coffee.

"Wait, what—she's the new MD?! No one told me that was Y/N."

A PR staff whispered to another, "She's the Y/N? The one who left two years ago?"

Y/N finally smiled, polite and composed, as she addressed the room.

"Good morning, everyone. I'm Y/N. Starting today, I'll be working with the agency's leadership team as your new managing director."

Her gaze lingered just one heartbeat longer on Rabin before she turned.

"I look forward to working with all of you."

And just like that, she turned the whole damn room into a movie scene.

The silence in the conference hall was deafening.

Y/N's voice, soft yet resolute, echoed clearly through the mic:

"…and I would like to give this… to my boyfriend, as a return gift."

A collective gasp rippled through the room.

The room was now filled with scattered gasps and stunned whispers.

"Boyfriend?"

"Did she just say boyfriend?"

"Wait—who?"

All heads turned. Murmurs buzzed like a swarm. Curious eyes darted around until they landed where Rabin sat.

He wasn't breathing.

His heart thudded so loud, it rang in his ears. Did she just…?

Y/N's heels clicked with quiet confidence. One step. Then another.

Each one bold — controlled — unapologetic.

She reached his table.

Everyone watched.

Even Raya froze, lips parted in disbelief, her fingers clutching her seat.

Y/N stood in front of Rabin. Her gaze locked with his.

She pulled out a folder — a simple matte black one — and held it out with both hands.

Rabin slowly reached up to take it. His fingers trembled.

He opened it.

Inside was a contract. Official. Clean. Marked with the agency's seal.

And on the final page:

Rabin's eyes dropped back to the folder.

On the final page…

It wasn't just a title.

"Shareholder – xxxxx Artist Agency "

Name: Rabin Angeles

Status: Pending Signature

His eyes widened.

He looked at her — the girl who once followed him around with a clipboard, now standing like a queen who built her own throne.

Y/N leaned slightly forward, her voice velvet but sharp.

"The only wait is over now, Rab.

Just sign it.

And no one can boss around you again."

Then, subtle but deadly, she turned her eyes…

Straight at Raya.

Raya, still seated, clenched her fists so tight her manicured nails dug into her palms.

Her eyes burned with fury.

But her lips stayed sealed — because what could she say?

This wasn't just romance anymore.

This was power.

And Y/N just proved —

She didn't climb the ladder.

She rebuilt the whole building.

Rabin's hands were still trembling slightly as he reached for the pen on the table.

He glanced up at Y/N, who nodded softly.

"This time," she whispered just for him,

"no agency, no PR, no fake headlines…

Only us — and everything we build together."

He signed.

The pen glided across the paper.

And with that stroke — the Nation's Boyfriend became his own boss.

Back at the Apartment — Author POV

The door clicked shut behind them. The city's noise faded, replaced by the quiet hum of their shared space.

Rabin dropped the folder onto the table — the one she handed him in front of everyone.

He turned to her, voice a mix of awe and worry.

Rabin: "Babe… why did you show up like that? In front of the whole agency… media… Raya…"

Y/N walked to him slowly, her expression firm but tender.

Y/N: "Because I'm done hiding."

She took his hand.

"I need to prove to them that you are my love. Proudly. Without hesitation. Without fear."

Rabin stared at her — eyes soft, voice low.

Rabin: "You didn't have to go that far…"

Y/N (smiling): "I did. Because you would've never done it first — not while thinking of everyone else's opinion."

She cupped his face gently.

Y/N: "So I did it for both of us. For the girl who was once 'just the assistant.' For the man they called the 'Nation's Boyfriend' but never saw as human."

He pulled her into a hug — a deep one — burying his face into her shoulder, exhaling everything he'd been holding back.

Rabin: "You didn't just prove something to them…

You reminded me why I fell in love with you."

They stayed like that for a moment — no titles, no cameras, no scripts.

Rabin pulled back slightly, his brows furrowed, searching her eyes.

Rabin: "Wait—wait? Where did you get that much money to buy a shareholder stake?"

Y/N bit her lip, her fingers tightening around his.

Y/N: "Rab… I lied to you."

He stiffened, confused.

Y/N: "I told you I used your black card to shop—to buy bags, things… but I didn't."

She looked up, a spark of pride lighting her gaze.

Y/N: "I played stocks. I studied the market, day and night.

I started small, just using what you gave me. From the profits, I reinvested again… and again.

I didn't use it for luxury—I used it to build something for us."

Rabin blinked, his expression shifting from disbelief to awe.

His hand dropped to his side, and he slowly sat down on the couch, speechless.

He looked at her, stunned into silence for a moment.

Then—

Rabin:

"You outplayed the industry, the agency… and me."

He again wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face into her shoulder.

Rabin:

"God, you're dangerous.

You're brilliant….And you're mine."
