Chapter 9 - Sin #8 — Obsessing Over Wealth and Luxury

"For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world."

— 1 John 2:16 (NIV)

The human eye is naturally drawn to beauty, sparkle, and shine—but when our gaze becomes fixated on riches and luxury, our soul slowly drifts from God. Obsession with wealth is not just about having money—it's about trusting in money, craving it, and living for it.

This sin begins with what the Bible calls "the lust of the eyes"—a restless hunger for more. Bigger houses. Better cars. Flashier clothes. A richer lifestyle. These cravings are fed by what we see, and left unchecked, they become idols in our hearts.

🔥 When the Eye Chases Riches

Wealth itself is not evil—many godly men and women in Scripture were blessed financially. But Scripture warns us that obsessing over riches is spiritually dangerous.

"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires... For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." — 1 Timothy 6:9–10

When the eyes become addicted to materialism:

We begin to measure success by possessions

We lose contentment and generosity

We serve money instead of God(Matthew 6:24)

Our *values shift from eternal things to temporary things

👁️ The Silent Drift of the Soul

This sin is especially dangerous because it's subtle. You may not realize how deeply wealth has gripped your eyes until your joy disappears when things are lacking, or your faith shakes when money runs out.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... but store up treasures in heaven." — Matthew 6:19–20

God doesn't mind you having nice things. He minds when those things have you.

🙏 How to Guard Against the Lust for Wealth

Live simply and wisely

Don't chase every trend. Learn to say, "Enough." (Ecclesiastes 5:10)

Be generous

Giving breaks the grip of greed. Share what you have.

Value eternal things

Invest in faith, relationships, and service, not just status.

Ask God to purify your desires

Ask the Holy Spirit to set your eyes on things above. (Colossians 3:2)

🧎 Prayer for Contentment and Focus

"Lord, I confess the times I've allowed my eyes to chase after wealth, status, and material comfort. Forgive me for placing hope in what fades. Teach me to seek eternal treasure and to trust in You, not riches. Help me live wisely, give generously, and fix my eyes on You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen."
