Chapter 17 - Sin #16 — Scornful Glances

"There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: a proud look, a lying tongue…"

— Proverbs 6:16–17 (KJV)

Before pride is heard in words or seen in actions, it often reveals itself through the eyes. A lifted chin. A narrowed gaze. A look of disdain, mockery, or superiority. Scornful glances are not just rude—they are sinful, and God hates them.

Why? Because they speak volumes—without saying a word.

🔥 Pride Has a Look

A proud look is more than facial expression—it's a posture of the heart. It says:

"I'm better than you."

"You're not worth my respect."

"I see your flaws, and I judge them."

Scornful glances:

Tear down rather than build up

Judge without understanding

Reflect a heart disconnected from humility and grace

"The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled; the Lord alone will be exalted." — Isaiah 2:11

Jesus Himself never looked down on the broken. He looked upon sinners with compassion, not contempt. So when we give scornful looks to others—especially the weak, wounded, or different—we betray the very heart of Christ.

👁️ Insight: Your Eyes Reflect Your Heart

Ask yourself:

Do I roll my eyes when others speak?

Do I glare at those I dislike or disrespect?

Do I smirk, sneer, or show disgust through my expressions?

Even if you never say a word, your eyes may be speaking pride, division, and cruelty. The Bible warns us: God resists the proud (James 4:6).

🙏 How to Guard Against a Proud Look

Walk in humility

Remember that all you have is from God. (1 Corinthians 4:7)

Train your eyes to honor others

Look at people with gentleness and respect, even if they differ from you.

Pray for a heart like Jesus

He looked upon sinners with mercy, not mockery.

Check your expression

Be mindful of your facial reactions. They speak more than words.

🧎 Prayer for a Humble Gaze

"Lord, forgive me for the times I've looked at others with pride or contempt. Cleanse my heart of arrogance. Teach me to see people as You see them—with love, mercy, and compassion. Let my eyes reflect Your grace, not my pride. May I walk in humility, and may every glance bring honor to You. In Jesus' name, Amen."
