Chapter 1 - First nightmare

"Where am I?"

That was the first thought to surface as I opened my eyes to a world in ruin.

In the dark of night, shattered houses loomed like the hollow and charred remains of skeletons, while real ones lay scattered in the dust, illuminated by the pale shine of the moon and stars.

As I turned in place, a cold premonition began to crawl up my spine.

Suddenly, the moon fell below the horizon. The sun rose from the west, streaked across the sky, and vanished in the east.

Subtle changes began to appear, as if time itself were rewinding at an unnatural speed.

This cycle repeated countless times. The bones disappeared. The broken houses repaired themselves.

People began to fill the streets — hurrying to work, talking, laughing — as if they had never been the bones scattered across the ruins.

Time allowed, stopped, and then resumed its usual pace.

[Aspirant! Welcome to the Nightmare spell. Prepare for your first trial...]

While crossing an empty alley, a man in his mid-thirties stepped into my path. He had short brown hair and sunken black eyes.

"Hey, friend. What's up? You seem new here," the brown-haired man said with a forced smile.

My body tensed.

Something was off.

Thanks to my [Insight] attribute, I could sense what others couldn't — a distortion beneath his skin, like a puppet pretending to be human.

I tightened my grip on the small knife I had picked up earlier for safety.

Suddenly, a wave of dizziness hit me. My limbs turned numb, and I felt myself losing control of my body.

My eyes widened in panic.

With every ounce of willpower I could muster, I swung the knife.

Steel pierced flesh. The man barely reacted — completely unsuspecting.

A moment later, a whisper echoed in my ear like a phantom breeze:

[You have slain a dormant human. Name: Unknown.]
