Chapter 4 - A trip down memory lane (2)

Ivy's mum had to attend to an urgent business meeting for a deal that just came up.

On finding out about her mother's intended trip, she insisted on going with her. Both her parents objected. She was just going to be a distraction.

Also, they were not going to let the money paid for extra lessons waste. They didn't give in and Ivy refused to continue with her lectures. Her tutor would come and sometimes she would lock her door and refuse to come out. Other times, she would run away from home when it was time to take her lectures.

As this persisted for awhile, her parents were forced to pause her lecture and allow her go on the trip with her mum. This decision was reached after Ivy's mum begged on her behalf. Prior to that, her dad was not willing to yield to her tantrums. She could remember the day her mum died. She had been in the hospital for three weeks after they had an accident on their way out of the city.

They didn't even arrive at the airport before the accident happened and it was all Ivy's fault. Obviously, her mother wasn't happy with her because of the drama she created just to have her way. Ivy could smell the reluctancy from her mother as she sat at the front sit alongside her. The driver had called in sick so Ivy's mum had to drive that fateful day. The atmosphere in the car was tense. Ivy began to sulk and ignored everything her mother said to her.

The accident happened unexpectedly. Ivy's mum repeatedly told her to put on her sit belt but she ignored. One moment, she brought the car to a stop hoping to put on the seat belt for Ivy since she wouldn't do it herself and the next, they were off the road. They had been hit by a trailer. The car somersaulted several times. When it did stop, Ivy's mum was unconscious.

People in the neighbourhood rushed to their aid. Nobody could explain how Ivy escaped without a fatal injury. When Ivy was brought out of the car, she saw her mother covered in her own blood. Her once white shirt had turned red. Ivy looked at her mother closely and then fainted. The accident scene was chaotic.

People screamed as they they could not wait for an ambulance. A car was gotten and Ivy and her mother were quickly rushed to the hospital. The druken driver that caused the accident tried to escape but was caught and arrested. He was later sentenced to fifteen years in jail when found guilty of all the charges brought against him.

Ivy woke up in the hospital. The picture of her mother covered in blood kept playing in her head. As for her mother, the doctors tried all they could to save her. She had internal injuries and had to undergo surgery immediately. It was an intense surgical procedure with a 50-50 chance of survival.

Luckily, the surgery was successful and she was said to be recovering. Some days later, she suffered a relapse and went into coma. She was later confirmed dead few days later. Ivy turned her head on th couch she lay. The feeling of dizziness had gone.

She remembered how her dad came to the room where she was kept in the hospital. You caused this, he said and walked away angrily. That was his way of breaking the news of her mother's death to her.

He later apologized to Ivy, but an apology could not take away what he already said. A day before her mother was confirmed dead, a thorough scan was done on Ivy for the Umpteenth time on her father's insistence. He wanted to be sure that absolutely nothing was wrong with Ivy's body as a result of the accident. Apart from the minor injuries on Ivy's body and head, nothing more was found. Well, Ivy knew something about her changed that day. She just couldn't tell what it was.

The doctor suggested that she undergo therapy and her father agreed. She wished her mother hadn't died. She didn't want to become an adult without her by her side. No! Her father would make life miserable for her. She rushed to her mother's ward and cried her eyes out. She still remembered seeing her the previous day looking lifeless.

Don't worry Ivy, Sophia is a very strong woman she would pull through this her father said.. For the very first time, Ivy heard her father call her other by her maiden name. All hopes they had were dashed the next day as she was confirmed dead.

The weeks, month and years that followed were terrible for Ivy. She was depressed and no amount of therapy could make her come out of it. She was haunted in her dreams by her guilt. Every single time, she heard her dad's voice in her head. "You caused this, you killed your mother" he would say and she would wake up screaming.

After about two years of trying to get her back his daughter to her usual self, Mr.Gold decided to send her to the U.S where his brother resided to complete her schooling. The idea was to get Ivy away from everything that had happened. His brother, Jamie was in agreement. The decision helped.take Ivy's mind away from all that had happened. She regained abit of her liveliness but she wasn't same again.

Ivy's alarm rang. She was jolted back to reality by the incessant noise and vibration coming from her phone. She stood up and turned on the white lights.

The room returned to its usual state.

The paintings were not longer scary. Apart from the creepy stuff in different locations of the room, it looked just like a normal hotel room. She brought out a box and put back the stuff she brought out earlier.

She placed a call to her secretary. Tell him I will be down in thirty.
