Chapter 13 - First Ripples

Wednesday afternoon, 3:15 p.m.

The once quiet halls of Ground Zero buzzed with activity. A new energy had infused the place—motivation, hope, and a touch of nervous excitement.

Leo stood at the entrance, watching as students, some from nearby universities and some from far-flung provinces, filtered in. The GZ Access program was in full swing. Scholarship recipients arrived to claim their spots in the innovation hub.

Among them, Leo spotted a familiar face—Jared, a bright but shy student from a rural town in Mindoro. Jared had written a passionate essay about sustainable farming, which had caught Ground Zero's attention.

Leo smiled. This was why it mattered.

Inside the main hall, Martin was organizing a welcome session.

"Alright everyone, welcome to Ground Zero," he began, voice projecting confidence. "You're not just students here—you're the next generation of change-makers. You'll have access to mentors, labs, and resources most people only dream about."

Zari stood nearby, handing out tablets preloaded with learning materials and project outlines. She caught Leo's eye and gave a subtle nod. Things were moving faster than expected.

Later, Leo retreated to a quiet corner, reviewing the latest data streams from the logistics project.

His phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number:

"We're watching. Don't underestimate the old guard."

Leo's fingers hovered over the screen.

No response.

At Ground Zero, a sudden power outage plunged the building into darkness.

Emergency lights flickered on. Students murmured nervously.

Zari's voice cut through the confusion. "Everyone stay calm! This looks like a targeted blackout."

Leo's system buzzed urgently.

[Alert: Possible sabotage detected]

Location: Ground Zero power grid

Threat Level: Moderate

Recommended Action: Activate emergency protocols

Leo moved quickly.

"Everyone, head to the safe rooms in groups of five," he ordered calmly. "We have emergency supplies ready."

Martin helped guide students while Aria and Dreigh secured important equipment.

In a shadowy office far away, Manuel Salonga watched the live news feed of the blackout.

A smug smile crossed his face.

"So, our little ghost isn't just playing at business. He's starting to scare them."

His phone buzzed.

"Sir, the private security contractor recommends physical surveillance increase. They suspect inside help."

Salonga narrowed his eyes.

"Get me everything on their staff and recent hires. I want the mole."

Back in Ground Zero's safe room, Leo sat surrounded by a handful of students, including Jared.

"Why would someone want to sabotage us?" Jared asked quietly.

Leo looked around. "Because we're a threat to the old ways. To power that doesn't want to be shared."

Zari frowned. "It won't be the last time. We have to be ready."

Leo nodded.

"This isn't just a startup anymore. It's a movement."

As the power gradually returned, cheers broke out.

Leo stood before the group.

"Today was a test. And we passed."

His eyes scanned the room.

"This is only the beginning."
