Chapter 23 - masked ball

Lana stared at her reflection, she was in the gown she picked for the ball, her hair was packed up with a few strands falling on her back and the sides of her face, with just red lipstick on her lips she didn't do anything makeup since the mask would be covering her face

She couldn't believe this was her, she couldn't believe she looked this beautiful, she never tried dressing up she couldn't afford it

the gown huggged her body revealing her curves and her fair skin glowed, glancing at her wrist the injury was completely healed not even a scratch was left which was strange but she decided not to question it

"You look so good Lana like a queen" Diane said her eyes sparkling with excitement

"I'm sure even his majesty won't be able to resist you" Aubrey said stretching her hands to give the matching mask to Lana

"I will accept every flattery except the words you just spoke Aubrey" Lana said collecting the mask, she glared at Aubrey why would she want to grab the attention of someone who was engaged, she wasn't a homewrecker

"But it's true, we've seen how he looks at you" Diane added giggling as she pictured them in her head

Lana groaned exhausted at their constant talking about getting Kairos attention, she already has enough being his personal maid she didn't need more

"Snap out of your imagination Diane, if you want I'll put in word for you so you can get noticed by him" she retorted

"He he no thanks I'd rather not" Diane replied, in as much as the king was really handsome and rich, he had a streak of killing people without thinking twice for the littlest reason, she loved her life. Rubbing her neck at the thought she gulped

"I see" Lana said putting on the gold mask that covered half of her upper face, she was amused by the thought of them shipping her with the king but they're to scared for their lives to be with him

"I'm leaving see you guys later" Lana said walking towards the door

"Lana you're not wearing any jewelries?" Diane asked

Lana paused fighting the urge to slap her head, she totally forgot the necklace Kairos ordered her to wear

Turning back she walked to the drawer she kept it, bringing it out she quickly put it on not realizing the hue change from Sapphire to hazel she rushed out of the room not to keep Kairos waiting

Lana rushed through the hallway, seeing Kairos at the entrance of the ballroom, the ball had already begun, inside was packed with both low class and people of high status

Reaching his side Lana curtsied "I'm sorry I'm late your majesty" she said with her head still lowered

Kairos stared at her dazed, she looked stunning, the gold dress complimented her skin making her glow like the sun in the dark, thinking about the fact that other people would see her made him frown if only he could lock her up

His eyes trailed to the necklace she wore, he frowned this was definitely his mother's necklace but it was sapphire not hazel, looking up at her face it didn't seem like she noticed

"Announcing the presence of his majesty"

The announcement brought Kairos back from his thoughts "rise" he said walking into the ballroom

Lana stood straight following closely behind him everyone bowed as he walked in, Lana was stunned at the amount of people in the ballroom all with their head down

"Rise" Kairos said his voice full of authority, sitting on the throne

Lana stood behind him, staring at him he had a different aura about him, it wasn't bloodlust like what she usually felt, he looked like a king he emitted the authority of a ruler, she was captivated by it

Unaware of the confused glances she was receiving by staying by the king's side, everyone wondered who she was and why she was at the king's side

They wondered if she was the new bride to be since he broke his engagement with lady Magerat

"Lana you don't have to stay by my side" Kairos said waving his hand for her to be dismissed

Curtsing Lana left him to the ball, walking down the stairs she could feel eyes on her, everyone watched her like she was some live show happening in front of them

Lana was trying to control her steps, she didn't want to fall on her face and embarrass both herself and Kairos, she felt uncomfortable with all the stares

Walking into the crowd she heard whispers of her name, they were talking about her she sighed rolling her eyes this is why she wanted to sleep in she lamented

Some people were bold enough to talk loud enough for her to hear

"I wonder who she is?" A lady asked staring curiously at Lana

"Hmph she's the witch that seduced the king and made lady Magerat loose her crown" another lady replied

"No wonder she has the audacity to wear that dress to a ball how vulgar"

Picking up a glass of wine from one of the maids passing, she sipped it trying to stop herself from taking any step cause she feared her temper won't let her stay still without causing chaos

Taking another sip she finally calmed down, walking to a corner of the hall she watched people dancing, admiring the elegance in their steps and praying in her heart no one would ask her to dance

Unfortunately her prayers were completely ignored as a young man walked towards her "My lady can I have this dance" he said bowing

Lana stared at the young man, he had brown hair, with dark brown eyes the mask he wore covered his face not letting her see his features

Staring silently at him she didn't know how to refuse him "pardon me but I'm not in the mood to dance" she finally said feeling a pang of guilt

Bowing the man walked away, letting out a sigh she didn't know she was holding, she didn't it was this difficult to turn someone down

"How arrogant, what right does she have to refuse a dance just because she stays at the king's side" a lady scoffed glaring at her

This was getting out of hand lana thought Gripping the wine glass, she wished she could just block out their annoying voices, her hold on the glass tightened she didn't realize the wine in the cup began to sizzle and the glass cracking

A lady in a red dress at the corner watched with a smile "this is my cue" she muttered making her way to Lana

Before people could notice the cracking glass the lady approached her curtsing "my lady" she said "may I?" She placed her hand on the wine to take it away from Lana's grip

Turning to the lady at her side she instinctively let go of the glass not noticing the crack, the Lady had distracted her from the whispers making her calm down

"Can I have a minute of your time" the lady asked, nodding in approval Lana walked out of the ballroom to the balcony grateful that someone finally took her away from there

Kairos narrowed his eyes as he watched lana leave the ballroom, he had noticed the wine glass and he suspected that the lady walking to her was no coincidence, getting up from his throne he decided to meet them.
