Chapter 1 - Air Notes

Chapter 1

Denora Seigfren

My golden eyes roamed the Restaurant Simon and I sat in, looking for something to distract myself from the emptiness I was feeling on the inside. My male best friend was talking to me, whatever he's saying has become a blur. My mind can't seem to focus because my energy is all over the room. Finally, my gaze settles on a young Uni couple in the corner of the restaurant. I allow myself to tune into their aura. The young petite girl radiates, a feeling of warmth and butterflies in her stomach.

Her heart is filled with so much love for her boyfriend. I love this for them. Hopefully the guy must be feeling the same way, right? He wasn't. His energy radiated deceit and false flattery. His heart longs for benefits he can never earn, but on the outside he has somehow managed to fool this sweet girl. Knowing this made me so upset. Why is this guy fooling this girl? Why can't he just--

"Earth to Denora. Are you there?" Simon spoke, drawing me out from my thoughts. He looked so concerned and worried for me. If I were him, I'd worry about me too. It's not my fault I'm prying into other people's business, when you're blessed with such a power of mind and aura reading, it's almost impossible not to feel such high sensitivity.

"I'm here Simon, Sorry I couldn't hear you, my mind was all over the place." I replied, feeling awful for not listening to him, when all he's doing is trying to help me. Tomorrow would make it exactly 6 years since I vanished from Kingdom Esmien and into the human world. I haven't been able to reach my family or return ever since, and my powers are not as strong as they used to be. Aunt Ruth, Simon's mother, made me understand that Esmien has become a lost kingdom.

I no longer feel or sense my people, and my powers are quite useless here. The only ones I still have access to are the dreams of the future, alongside the mind and aura reading. Everything else is gone, like it never existed. My wolf, Aeris has refused to come out and let us transform. She promises to do so only when I need her the most. I've given up on trying to convince her.

Simon reaches for my hand and smiles lightly with hope in his dark eyes that he will somehow lighten up my mood. He uses his free hand to reach for his back pack and removes a drawing book from it. We had just entered this restaurant 20 minutes' ago, with the intention of eating some food and getting some University work done. But he seems to have other plans.

Simon opened the book and showed me the sketches of the moon he had made for the month. The last days of April were here already.

"Look Denora, Tomorrow is another full moon. We can try to make contact with Esmien again" Simon smiled, pointing at the drawing book. It took 30 days to get one full moon. For every attempt I've made to return to Esmien, I was only given 12 chances in each year to try to get back. Since Esmien was created by the moon goddess, the moon's power is needed to have access. But gaining entry is more difficult because Esmien is lost and the contact has somehow been broken. Was there any hope for me? I pushed the book away and closed it shut. Maybe I should start getting used to my new life in the human world.

"Stop this Simon, I'm done trying to return to Esmien. It's no use." 6 years of wasted efforts and Pain. If Esmien was lost then I was done trying to go back.

"But you can't give Up Denora, not now. We've come so far already. There's no harm in trying again." He said, hoping to convince me to give it another shot. Simon is a descendant of Esmien but he's spent his whole life in the human world because his mom Aunt Ruth moved here before she had him. His dad was a wolf and belonged to the warrior pack in Esmien, while Aunt Ruth is a Magic Summoner. I'm sure there were other reasons why he was putting in so much effort to find the lost Kingdom.

"The only reason you're trying to find Esmien so badly Simon, is because you want to go there. It's been lost for 6 years; we have tried 64 times! Give it a rest, please!" My voice came out annoyed, sounding louder than it initially was. A few people turned to see who yelled, then they looked away. The waiters finally brought our food. I ordered Spaghetti and meat balls with a Milkshake while Simon went for Roast beef and rice. He sighed a bit, leaning backwards into his chair and running his left hand through his Chestnut brown hair of shoulder length. I knew this wasn't about him. I just wanted him to leave me alone because I was tired of searching for Esmien. He watched me carefully as I ate my food, probably thinking of the best possible words to say to me. I could tell he was tired of the search too, but he just wasn't someone to quit. He positioned himself upright on the curved yellow chair and leaned in to me.

"Denora, I know you're tired of searching for Esmien. If I'm being honest, I'm tired too. But there's 3 things I know that's for certain." He paused searching my face for a signal to go ahead and speak.

"I'm Listening." I gave him a chance to explain himself.

" One. Esmien is out there somewhere I can feel it. Two. There's no harm in trying one more time. If we try tomorrow and it doesn't work, I'll never bother you again. And three. I know you miss your family, most of all, I know you miss Victor." And that was all he had to say to change my mind. My eyes began to tear up lightly at the mention of his words. I have only seen my family in dreams in the last 6 years. In the dreams they call me to come back to Esmien but I am unable to respond.

Having to feel their emotions deeply wasn't even enough. But Victor, oh my sweet Victor. Him and I are child hood sweet hearts. I can't believe I haven't seen them in so long. I don't even have a picture of any of them, they only exist in my memory. On the day that I left Esmien, Victor and I were supposed to meet at the Enchanted Garden, under the Big oak tree. I never got the chance to show up. No one else has been able to reach out to me physically unless through my dreams. But somehow, Victor Calinte found a way to send me Air notes every single day for six years.

Recently, they have started to decline in consistency of how much I receive them. What hurt me the most was how I wasn't able to reply any of them. He must think that I am ignoring him.

Simon was there a couple of times when the notes arrive in the air. And because he is a part of Esmien, he is gifted with the sight to see them. Maybe Simon was right, there was no harm in trying again. I peeked into his mind as he ate his food. He had optimistic thoughts, like he knew he finally found a way to convince me.

He looked up from his plate and his eyes met mine.

"It's a deal Simon, One more time." I replied, wiping a few drops of tears from the corners of my eye balls.

"Yes!' He exclaimed, throwing his left fist in the air in an upward motion while the second went down, all as a sign of excitement. I giggled lightly, my feelings replaced with a little bit of hope and calmness. I was so grateful for having Simon in my life. Without him I can't imagine what would have become of me. We were done with our food and about to leave when something caught my attention.

I hear it in the wind from a distance. It spins endlessly searching for who it belongs to. A tiny flame in the air caught my attention. Simon could see it too. When it came close enough, I used my right hand to grab the flame. I let it go in front of me and it hovered in the air, Simon watched with fascination as I spun my fingers over the flame and it transformed into an Air note. I grabbed the note with my two hands. The hand writing belonged to my darling victor. Oh, my sweet love. I began to read:

'The greatest Desire of mine is to see your gorgeous face again. I can't get over you Denora. I can sense that you are still alive. I want you in my arms again. Your memory brings longing and Desire to my being. But I can no longer hope for a reality that may never come to be. I'm moving on Nora. By tomorrow, I will be married to a noble Woman from Belana. My family has arranged this marriage, I never wanted it. This is my last Air note to you my love, remember that you will always have a special place in my heart. Always and forever.'~ Victor Calinte

The joy I felt at the beginning had quickly dissolved. My eyes grew red with the anger that was starting to boil in me. Simon's smile had turned into a frown as well. There's no way I'm letting my mate get married to another woman. Not while I'm still alive. The note dissolved as I let it go.

I stood up from the table, walking out of the forest themed restaurant. Simon followed without question, helping me with my bag as well. Wherever Esmien was, whatever realm or time line. I am feeling more than determined now. Surely by tomorrow on the full moon, I will definitely find Esmien again.
