"I miss you, Mom. I wish I could see you... Is it true? Am I the reason you died? Do you miss me? Can you hear me cry?"
-
On a warm summer evening in Mexico, a girl lay on her bed talking to her mother.
Maria:
"Mom... Mom!"
Her mother looked at her with warmth in her eyes and said,
Eliana:
"What is it, my love?"
Maria:
"Tell me... how did you choose my name?"
Eliana:
"Alright, I'll tell you."
Suddenly, a young boy around eight years old popped in.
Liam:
"What? You're telling a story and I'm not invited?"
Eliana:
"Of course you're invited! Come, lie in my lap."
Maria:
"What? I want to lie in your lap too!"
Eliana:
"That's jealousy."
Both Maria and Liam giggled.
Eliana:
"Alright, let's begin. Once upon a time, there were two girls, both fourteen years old. They were like sisters. In fact, everyone who saw them thought they were real sisters—similar personalities, even a bit of resemblance. Their names were Eliana and Maria."
Liam (in a childish voice):
"Mom! That's your name... and my sister's name!"
Eliana:
"Yes, sweetheart. This story is mine."
Maria:
"Shh! I want to listen."
Liam (pouting):
"Fine."
• Flashback — 30 years ago •
Maria:
"Listen to me. When I grow up and have a daughter, I'll name her Eliana after you, okay? And you—when you have a daughter, her name will be Maria. Got it?"
Eliana:
"Of course. You're my sister."
Maria hugged her tightly.
Maria:
"I love you, sis."
Eliana:
"Not more than I love you."
• Another flashback — 11 years later •
It was Maria's wedding day.
Maria (nervously):
"I'm so nervous."
Eliana:
"Today, John—your love—is becoming your husband."
Maria:
"I know, I know! That's why I'm so nervous."
Eliana:
"Don't worry, darling."
Maria's mother entered to tell her that everyone was waiting.
Eliana:
"Come on, take a deep breath."
Maria:
"Am I giving birth or what?"
Eliana laughed.
Eliana:
"Shut up and calm down."
Maria:
"I can't! I can't!"
Eliana:
"Relax, everything will happen just the way you dreamed."
Maria:
"We'll see what happens on your wedding day!"
Eliana burst into laughter.
Trying to distract herself, Maria asked:
Maria:
"H-how's Stephen?"
Eliana:
"Not now."
Maria:
"Eliaaana!"
Eliana:
"Let's go, we can't be late."
And so, Maria married the love of her life. Then came the day Eliana—her soul sister—was getting married too.
Maria:
"I see someone's nervous."
Eliana:
"Zip it."
Maria laughed at her, but suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her belly. Her baby had moved. She tried to hide it, but Eliana noticed.
Eliana:
"What's wrong?"
Maria (wincing a bit):
"He moved—the little troublemaker."
Eliana:
"That 'troublemaker' is your son, silly. Anyway, have you decided on his name?"
Maria:
"Max. His name will be Max. And you—like we agreed—if you have a daughter, she'll be named Maria!"
Eliana:
"Of course! And what if it's a boy?"
Maria:
"We'll figure that out later. Come on, everyone's waiting."
Eliana:
"Alright."
