Chapter 5 - Successful Experimental Subject

"What happened?" The captain asked.

Such a huge explosion, it was as powerful as the one they used to blow up the underground laboratory. It was like his full powered attack.

Suddenly, the earth not too far from them began to collapse, forming a huge hole.

"Let's go check it!" The Captain said as he led his team over. "Be careful, if it was an enemy, I wasn't confident that I would be able to protect all of you."

When they arrived, they saw a huge fire below the hole. Even from above they could feel the hot air gushed towards them.

"Syl!"

A woman from their team began chanting at the Captain's command.

A waterfall suddenly materializes in front of them, pouring towards the fire, extinguishing them instantly.

"Wait here!" The Captain said as he jumped down.

Not long after, he came back up.

"Did you find anything, Captain?"

"There's nothing, everything has been swallowed up by the explosion. By my deduction it was an attempt to destroy everything, preventing us from gaining anything." The Captain explained, "The explosion was likely caused by some magic equipment coming into contact with fire, causing it to become unstable and explode."

"Just what kind of device could cause such a huge explosion." Everyone wondered.

If Ryan was here, he would realize that the huge explosion came from the room where he first woke up. The combination of fire, magic equipment and the demon core caused the huge explosion, erasing every trace about the experiment.

"So, do we need to start searching for the underground laboratory now?"

"Let's wait for a bit, we can't let our members or the guards fall into traps." The Captain decided. A decision that led many of their members to avoid death. If it was not because of Ryan causing an explosion, making them wary, many of their members would likely end up injured if not dead because of the traps.

"Hey!" Ryan suddenly felt someone sit beside him.

He looked at him because of the call. It was a young man that looked about fifteen years old. His hair was disheveled and he also wore the experiment subject clothes. But what was striking about him was his eyes.

He had two different eyes. It was not just about the color that was different, but the overall thing about the eyes feels different. While one of his eyes was normal, the other was pitch black with a red pupil.

Moreover, Ryan didn't see any of the expressions the other had on his face. He was serene and indifferent, likely didn't think that the underground laboratory being destroyed was a bad thing.

"What is it?"

"Is your experiment also successful?" He suddenly asked out of the blue. "But why didn't I see the difference in you?"

That single question made Ryan's mind jolt. But he calmed down instantly when he saw the other party's expression.

"What do you mean by successful experiment?" Ryan asked, feigning puzzlement.

"Didn't you undergo the experiment?" The youth asked, equally puzzled.

"No" Ryan just continues feigning ignorance.

"Was I mistaken? But I clearly saw something different about him." The youth muttered, "Is it because this eye still doesn't function normally yet?"

"Anyway, what's your name?" The youth asked, "My name is Kevin."

A name huh?

Ryan thinks about the original name of the body. But thinking about everything that happened along with the memories he gained, he realized that the original body didn't have any obsession and likely passed peacefully.

It was because the experiment he underwent needs to be done as he is unconscious. Being able to eat his fill everyday was something he was already satisfied with. Different from other children, he was aware that he was sold by his parents, but he didn't resent them for it as it allowed him to live a better life.

When he was at home, eating until he was full was a luxury he only got to enjoy once in a blue moon. But in the laboratory he got to eat his fill everyday. It could be said that he was already content with his life.

So, "Ryan, my name was Ryan." Let's not use the old name and bother the already peaceful soul and just use his name.

"So, you are Ryan." Kevin nodded, "Nice to meet you."

"But, why did you just arrive now?" He asked "and why did you come just alone? Where are the others?"

Ryan glanced at Kevin, and knew that it was just a pure child's curiosity, with no other intentions.

"Because I was abandoned." Ryan said weakly. He didn't know how to express it clearly, the feeling of being abandoned, so he chose to just lower his voice, making it barely audible.

"What?" Kevin was in disbelief. "Are you sure you are abandoned?"

From what he remembered, there was no way some experiment subjects would be abandoned. If they didn't come back, it only means two things. One was they died in the experiment or two, like him, the experiment succeeded. They then would undergo many testing to determine what factor led the experiment to success.

"Yes, At that time I was called with eleven others." Ryan began fabricating a story. "At first we were told to wait, and one by one we were called to enter another room until it was just me remaining."

"Just then, there was an earthquake that was accompanied by a huge explosion and the laboratory sirens began wailing. I panicked at that time and hid. When everything became quieter, everyone was gone." Ryan shook his head.

"But it was then that I learned what the purpose of us was. Experiment, and we are the experiment subject. When I went to the other room, I found everyone dead with their chest open." Ryan sighed.

"You are so lucky." Kevin said enviously, touching his odd eyes.

"Why do you think so?" Ryan asked back.

"Because you hadn't undergone the experiment yet."

"Is that so?" Ryan said, unconsciously he also touched his chest. "Maybe."

Ryan didn't know if he was lucky or unlucky. Unlucky because he woke up in another world without any cause or lucky because the body he occupied didn't have any rejection issues.

If he transmigrated because he was dead, then it could be said that he was really lucky
