Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 Letters from Afar

[Task 1: Build a Sky Garden]

From the first time Bruno opened the wonder construction system until now, every time he saw this task, he would feel a hint of sadness.

Is this... a joke? ! !

Start with hell level difficulty right from the start?

Ah! This damn system!

You know, for Bruno, this is not a game, and the sky garden cannot be built simply by pulling up a few trees or hitting a few hammers.

Most people probably know more or less about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This wonder, whose existence is still controversial, really made Bruno at a loss.

When Bruno focused his consciousness on the task entry, he saw a flash of golden light, and a long introduction about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon emerged with a hint of Wikipedia.

I quickly scanned the endless nonsense, and generally speaking, the last sentence is the highlight: the true face of the Hanging Gardens is still hidden in the mist of history...

Bruno wanted to curse, he felt like a thousand alpaca horses were galloping in his mind...

How can I build something like this without any reference or explanation?

Not to mention how much manpower and material resources are needed to build a wonder, Bruno now doesn't even know what the hanging garden will look like.

As I was thinking about it, there was a knock on the door.

Bruno stood up and opened the door, and saw the old butler Ford standing in front of the door with a hunched back, followed by his personal valet, Leon.

"Come in."

As Bruno spoke, he turned around, walked straight to his desk and sat down.

The old butler Ford can be regarded as an old man in the castle. In his early years, he was Bruno's father's personal servant and followed him everywhere.

Bruno's father was named Adam Stuart. He was once an imperial general. Later, he made great contributions in suppressing the rebellion in the province of Exeter, and was therefore named the hereditary earl of Idar by the Regency Council.

The old butler Ford, who had accompanied Bruno's father to the battlefield and killed enemy chiefs, could be said to be the person Bruno trusted and relied on the most.

"Sir, this is a letter from the Regency Council."

The old butler, who was over fifty years old, handed over a letter.

The wax seal was printed with the double-headed eagle emblem used exclusively by the Regency Council. The emblem was surrounded by a magical aura. This was a method used in this world to ensure the privacy of letters.

In the original body's memory, the Regency Council of the Norman Empire could be regarded as the highest authority in the Norman Empire. Especially when the royal family was in decline, the Regency Council composed of five great nobles could be said to have monopolized power.

Bruno took the letter and couldn't help feeling confused. The Regency Council was too far away for small nobles like them who lived in marginal areas. They had almost no dealings with them on weekdays. He didn't know whether this sudden letter was good or bad.

While Bruno was reading the letter, the old butler Ford and the personal servant Shabi naturally retreated to the door, waiting for the lord's instructions.

"The Regency Council is going to recruit tens of thousands of workers from across the country to build the statue. Even our earldom will have to provide fifty civilians who believe in the church."

After reading the letter, Bruno said in a deep voice.

"Building a statue?" The old butler Ford frowned. "Isn't that the church's business?"

Bruno shook the envelope and said, "But it was issued in the name of the Regent Council."

"Can serfs be recruited? If we forcibly recruit civilians, I'm afraid we will have to use the family's private soldiers." Old Ford said in a deep voice.

Bruno glanced at the letter again and shook his head helplessly.

The commoners were different from serfs in that they were free people who owned their own land and only had to pay a portion of taxes to the lord every year.

As for the common people who believe in the church, most of them have some wealth at home. Only a fool would voluntarily travel across mountains and rivers to do hard labor for you.

"Archbishop Mels dreamed of entering the divine realm and was grateful for the divine teachings..." Bruno read word by word, "recruiting tens of thousands of civilians to build a statue of the god in order to repay the grace of the gods and redeem their sins..."

etc...

Bruno seemed to suddenly think of something...

Build a statue?

But... who in this world has ever truly seen the face of God?

It's nothing more than a fantasy created by the world.

However, if this is the case...can I build a so-called sky garden based on my own imagination?

Bruno felt that his idea made some sense.

As soon as he thought about it, the familiar words appeared in Bruno's vision again.

[From the first sprouts of life underwater to the giant beasts of the Stone Age...]

It was that familiar boot animation again, and after a moment, the system finally loaded successfully.

Bruno glanced over the property panel on the left and couldn't wait to review the task about building a sky garden.

It seems... the system does not require me to build according to a certain standard...

So... this is actually an open question?

Although it still looks difficult...but, at least it leaves a little room for myself.

"Master? Lord Earl?"

The old butler Ford noticed that Bruno's eyes suddenly became vague, so he waved his hand and called softly.

Leon beside him hurriedly whispered, "You were not at home these few days. When I was serving the master, he often fell into deep thought. You see... our master is indeed a nobleman with great wisdom!"

"Is... that so?" The old butler Ford was stunned for a moment and looked at Bruno again. Sure enough, his master seemed to be really thinking deeply and making plans.

"The master has worked so hard... At the age of seventeen or eighteen, he has to take on the responsibility of governing a territory..." Old Ford suddenly felt emotional: "Leon, tell the kitchen to make a few more black puddings for the master to eat in the evening. He must nourish his body well."

"Yes, I know." Leon replied quickly.

Bruno exited the system interface and looked at the two people who were whispering.

"What?" Bruno asked, smiling.

"The old housekeeper saw that you were very busy, so he specifically asked me to ask the kitchen to prepare more black pudding."

The smile on Bruno's face suddenly became stiff.

"Let's not do that... Just prepare some more white bread... Never mind, I'll go to the kitchen and take a look myself later."

"How can this be possible? How can you go to the place where the servants are waiting..."

Before old Ford could finish speaking, Bruno raised his hand and interrupted the old butler.

"It's settled..." Bruno changed the subject: "As for recruiting civilians, there's no need to be too anxious. Old Ford, I'll give you three days to conduct a census in Idar City first."

"A...what?" Old Ford was a little confused.

"A census is to register all civilians and serfs living in Idar City. Not only their names and ages are required, but also their occupations, addresses, relatives and friends, and other relevant information."

Although the city of Idar is now his fiefdom, he knows almost nothing about every aspect of Idar, and can only have a rough estimate of the population.

After all, the original owner of this body was an extremely ridiculous noble lord who only knew how to enjoy himself all day long and didn't care about the affairs of the territory at all.

"But what's the use of this?" asked old Ford doubtfully.

"Of course there are uses" Bruno said.

"For example, let's take the current recruitment of civilians. If we have the information of all civilians, we can directly use our files to do a preliminary screening and pick out all those idle moles who are always causing trouble... Similarly, people with talents in various fields can also be roughly identified through the census. In short, although it seems a bit troublesome now, it will be of great use in the future."

"I see, sir. I'll do it right away." Old Ford seemed to be thinking about something.
