Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: The Pit in Saitama's House

Kaito had originally thought it might be Mosquito Girl who had snuck in, but he didn't expect it to be Fubuki.

He didn't open his eyes completely—just left a narrow slit—wanting to see what this bold girl intended to do with her midnight visit.

Moonlight streamed through the gap in the curtains, casting a silvery band of light across the floor.

Fubuki tiptoed into the room, moving like an elegant cat. Tonight, she had changed into a light-purple silk nightgown. The thin fabric swayed gently with her movements, outlining her graceful curves.

After slipping inside, she moved to the bedside, half-sitting on the floor. Propping her chin in her hands, she quietly watched the "sleeping" Kaito in the pale moonlight.

The silver glow traced the delicate lines of her face, while her long lashes cast faint shadows over her cheeks.

"King-sama looks so handsome even when he's sleeping…" she murmured, her voice barely audible.

Kaito caught a faint fragrance drifting from her—fresh jasmine with a hint of citrus, carrying a sweetness that lingered. It reminded him of the scent she'd carried at the banquet earlier, when she had linked arms with him.

But now, it was subtly different. This fragrance spoke of a careful bath taken after returning home, light and clean.

Her face grew redder under the moonlight, her beauty edged with shyness. She bit her lower lip gently, her eyes growing hazy.

Her cheeks inched closer, so near that Kaito could feel her warm breath brushing against his skin.

"Just… just one little kiss…" she whispered, voice trembling with both anticipation and embarrassment.

Then, something soft touched his lips.

It was light as a feather, hesitant yet electrifying. Fubuki's lips were softer than he had imagined, carrying the faint sweetness of strawberry lip balm.

Kaito's eyes opened, meeting hers directly. Her emerald eyes widened in shock, sparkling like those of a startled fawn in the moonlight.

"Ah!"

She gasped, springing back as if burned. Her flushed cheeks deepened to crimson, even her ears burning red.

"You… you were awake?!"

Kaito's eyes held a faint smile, and that only made her more flustered.

She scrambled up to flee, but in her panic, bumped her head on the nightstand with a dull thud.

"W-woo…" Tears welled in her eyes as she clutched her forehead, looking both pitiful and irresistibly cute—like a thief caught in the act. She stumbled toward the door, even losing one slipper along the way.

Kaito didn't chase her. He simply watched her frantic escape with quiet amusement.

In the moonlight, her smooth calves and slender ankles peeked from beneath her nightgown, and in her hurry she almost tripped over the hem.

"This little girl is bold," Kaito murmured, chuckling softly. "Even pulling off a night raid."

He instinctively licked his lips where she'd kissed him. "Mmm… sweet."

A patter of footsteps echoed outside, followed by a sharp bang as her door shut—Fubuki retreating back to her apartment.

Kaito rolled over, burying his face into the pillow where her scent lingered.

The night passed without further incident.

Morning sunlight streamed into the bedroom. Kaito stretched lazily, though Fubuki's visit had left his sleep restless—her flushed face and soft lips flickering through his dreams.

"Boss, breakfast is ready," Mosquito Girl called cheerfully from outside the door.

Kaito dressed and stepped out to find the table already laden with a sumptuous spread—golden sunny-side-up eggs, perfectly toasted bread, fresh fruit salad, and a steaming cup of black coffee.

"Why so lavish today?" Kaito asked, raising an eyebrow.

Mosquito Girl's cheeks colored faintly, her fingers toying with her apron. "Last night… Boss brought me cake, so I wanted to repay you…"

Kaito smiled knowingly and sat down to enjoy breakfast.

Mosquito Girl's cooking skills had indeed improved rapidly—every dish on the table was delicious.

"Oh, Boss," she asked, refilling his coffee, "do you have any plans for today?"

Kaito set down his cup, thinking for a moment. "I plan to go find Saitama. Last time at the banquet was too rushed—we didn't get to talk much."

Mosquito Girl nodded and turned toward the kitchen. "Then I'll prepare some snacks for you to take with you."

Half an hour later, Kaito stepped out of the apartment, carrying the bento box she had carefully packed. Inside were an assortment of Japanese wagashi and her special sandwiches.

Fubuki's door was shut tight, as if the girl were still hiding from the memory of last night's events.

On the outskirts of Z City, Saitama's apartment looked especially humble.

The yard was overrun with weeds, with only a few stubborn wildflowers swaying in the wind.

As Kaito approached the gate, he spotted Saitama and Genos squatting in the middle of the yard, both in casual clothes, staring intently at something on the ground.

"Saitama, what are you looking at?" Kaito asked, pushing open the creaking gate.

Genos immediately stood to greet him. "Mr. King!" He accepted the bento box with respect. "You've come at a good time."

Saitama waved without turning. "King, come look! There's suddenly a big pit in my yard!"

Kaito stepped closer and crouched beside them. On the ground was a perfectly circular pit, about two meters wide, its edges unnaturally neat—like they'd been sliced clean by a blade.

Inside, it was pitch black and seemed to drop endlessly. Cold, damp air wafted up, carrying a faint musty smell.

"It just appeared this morning," Saitama said, scratching his bald head in mild annoyance. "I'd just woken up when a monster broke in. After I smacked it away, I noticed this pit. I don't know which idiot decided to dig this here!"

Genos added, "According to my scans, it's at least three hundred meters deep, with a complex tunnel system at the bottom."

Kaito stared into the darkness, a realization forming.

If he remembered correctly, the Monster Association's headquarters lay underground in Z City—and right beneath Saitama's house was one of the entrances.

The creature from this morning had likely been a small fry out foraging… only to bump into the unluckiest opponent possible.

"Interesting," Kaito murmured, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

He'd been wondering how to find a steady supply of monsters to harvest deterrence points. This was practically a buffet—served up with Saitama as the ultimate insurance policy. And if luck was on his side, maybe he could even nab Psykos and prevent Z City's destruction entirely.

"Since we're just standing around," Kaito suggested, "why don't we go down and explore?"

Saitama's eyes lit up instantly. "Great! The supermarket's special sale got canceled today, so I was getting bored!"

He dashed into the house. "Wait here while I change!"

Genos hesitated. "Mr. King, the underground situation is unknown. There could be danger…"

Kaito clapped him on the shoulder. "What's there to be afraid of with Saitama around? And your firepower's more than enough for most situations."

Genos thought for a moment, then nodded solemnly. "You're right. I'll protect Sensei and Mr. King
