Chapter 25 - Getting Pulled into Troublesome matters

Cate had no issue with the wolves, but she also wasn't willing to associate with them. This wasn't because they weren't good enough, but because they were too troublesome, especially in situations like this one. Werewolves had a pack mentality and sometimes forgot that not everyone in the world thought like them. They wanted everyone to live together, work together, and help each other. Cate was one of the people who wasn't interested in living with a pack. Her way of thinking was, in fact, more attuned to the vampires who liked to live on their own. She was that kind of person, and nothing could change her after thousands of years.

Back when she was young, she liked cooperating with her fellow man and solving problems as a unit, but this kind of thinking had led her down a dark path. She became a monster, cursed by all. She was hunted by "heroes" and cursed as a villain of her time. Even after she was beheaded, she continued to pay for the trust she had handed over to people she once called friends, lovers, and neighbors. Her head was used as a weapon for thousands of years. She had no choice in the matter, and even when she wished to rest in peace and return to the warm embrace of the earth, no one listened to her. They simply ignored her since her words were considered poisonous to the righteous mind.

She had been left with no choice but to live one century after another with her body missing. Living as a head for even a second was enough to completely shatter the mind of most people. This was because even after time passed, one would forever remain with the pain of being beheaded. This pain would follow them forever because no man was meant to live with only their head. The soul was a whole entity with the head and the rest of the body. If a soul were to be trapped inside a head that lacked over eighty percent of its body, and this went on for centuries, the pain that would move through the soul was enough to cripple a person's reason and logic, forever throwing them into the abyss of madness.

This was how Medusa/Cate lived for the past few thousand years. She had never gotten used to the pain since, with each passing minute, the pain would evolve into something new that could no longer even be described as pain due to its sheer intensity. After going through all this suffering, Cate gave up things like trust, camaraderie, and anything to do with pack life.

When she saw the wolves and remembered how they lived their lives, she felt a twinge of regret for what she had lost, and yet at the same time, she loathed the wolves for choosing to live their lives in this manner. In her eyes, everyone came to this world alone and naked. Even if they chose to leave this world in the best suit or dress, they would still leave this world on their own. Since the beginning and the end were things that could only be embraced in loneliness, what was the reason for trying to live with others?

Cate had concluded that one could sleep with other people under the same roof. They could share the same bed and have the most explosive sex. They could get married and share their living expenses. They could live happy lives by depending on each other, but all this was for naught since man, and even the gods, were born with treachery embedded deep within their hearts.

Cate believed that those people called trustworthy and dependable had yet to betray those they loved because they had yet to get a good enough reason. This reason could be money, jealousy, love, hatred, loyalty to the country, and many other reasons that can give the trustworthy person the excuse they need to betray those who depend on them. In short, Cate had long ago lost all trust and loyalty. She only trusted herself, and her loyalty remained with her person and no one else.

The werewolf moved closer and stopped at the table. Cate did not stop eating her steak. She cut and chewed with gusto. She did not appear to have any grace whatsoever, and yet when anyone looked at her, they could not call her ugly or uncouth. She did not spare a glance for the werewolf alpha, and this was disrespectful.

"Hahahahahah," someone said, "Even a bastard knows that you are but a dog wagging its tail, not worth looking at." It was one of the vampires.

The vampires were very easy to identify. They had long blood-red hair, long black nails, and their skins seemed to have way too much tension. They appeared flawless, with perfectly slender physiques and red eyes. They had an immortal grace about them, and this was to be expected since among all the supernaturals present in this place, only they could claim to have immortality.

The other supernatural creatures had very long lives, with the werewolves having a lifespan of about one thousand years. The magicians could only live for about two hundred years. Unless they became legendary magicians, able to grasp the ways of death, they could not live beyond two hundred years. On the other hand, vampires could live almost eternally, as long as they were not killed by the Hunters.

The vampire was not about to let the werewolf off. He also walked toward the table. This was the reason Cate had almost cursed out loud when she saw the werewolf moving toward her table. This would pull her into the rivalry between the wolves and the vampires. Cate was not willing to get involved in something so troublesome yet lacking in rewards.

The werewolf turned around and let out a growl. The hall trembled as though it could collapse at any moment. He had not even been trying, and the power on display was already enough to scare most people. The vampire smiled gracefully as he continued moving closer. He had no fear toward the wolf, at least this was the image he showed. The werewolves who had still been seated stood up at this moment and looked at the vampire. All they needed was a single order from the alpha, and they would attack the vampire, ripping him apart. The other vampires in the hall saw this, but they did not seem to care. This was the nature of the solitary being. In their eyes, this was none of their business.
