Chapter 53 - Ascent to Genesis: Two Years in the Avalon Society

Cate had single-handedly grabbed one of the eyes and sealed it with a powerful spell, all before she escaped from the pyramid. She had then held onto the eye for all this time, making sure not to expose anything to her team and anyone from the Avalon Society.

Cate was always looking for ways to increase her power, and this eye had the kind of power that she found attractive. Her enemies were simply far too powerful. She could not afford to give up any chance to increase her power. Even as she sought to open the Vault of Souls, she would not give up on gaining power through other means. The one eye she had allowed the Avalon Society to have was enough for her to justify herself to them, allowing her to grow her authority in the organization, leading her one step closer to learning their secrets, including where they kept their powerful items, such as the Keys of Chaos that had led her to join this organization. The second eye was better put to use in her capable hands.

Cate wanted to learn the secrets of this being, including what made its life force so vigorous that it appeared immortal by all standards. Cate had a feeling that by getting her hands on the secrets of this being, she could greatly increase her power. Cate looked at her left hand, which was healing rapidly. It had been completely blown off, but right before her eyes, her flesh was moving about to reform her hand. The blood that had splattered all over the marble floor began moving about as though it had a life of its own. As she looked at the blood, Cate had a feeling that she was looking at herself. She was the blood, and the blood was her. She felt that even if her body were to be wiped out, she could come back to life through this blood on the floor.

The blood moved over the floor and reached her legs. Cate did not move away as she wanted to see what would happen. The moment the blood touched her skin, it seeped into her body through the many pores without causing any discomfort for her. After a few minutes, all the blood was gone. It had returned to her body, and her hand was fully reformed. It was as though nothing had ever happened. Cate had created the Original Sin spell, but even she was shaken by the changes it was bringing to her. Her healing abilities had greatly improved. She was on the verge of feeling eternal. She knew that this was impossible with only the Original Sin spell, but she was already feeling as though she could heal even better than the vampires and other Immortal beings.

The eye hovered over the floor and stayed in place. Its pupil was focused on Cate, but there was nothing it could do. The seal that Cate had used to seal it was simply far too powerful. Cate could see the malice this being held toward her, but none of this mattered. Cate was only interested in seeing through the secrets of this being so as to increase her power.

Cate looked around her vault to make sure that everything was in order. The vault was very large, large enough to fit a small mountain. This was because space magic was used to forge this small world. Cate had paid dearly, but after seeing how big and well-protected the vault was, Cate believed that it was worth it. Currently, the only thing in the vault was the sealed eye that floated in place without doing anything.

Cate sat down on the marble floor and watched the eye with all her concentration. Ever since she used the Original Sin spell on herself, Cate had begun changing, shedding her human skin and flesh. Apart from her incredible healing abilities, Cate had gained the ability to see the flow of magic. The world was filled with magic. It could be said that the world they lived in was a sea of magic, no different from how fish lived in water. Cate sat there and looked at the eye. This eye gave off a powerful magical energy, and yet when Cate looked closer at it, she realized that this was not magic but something far more powerful. She did not know how to describe it, and so she simply sat in place and watched the eye. The eye looked back, and the silence in the hall grew darker. For hours, Cate watched the eye, and the eye watched her.

Time moved on, and soon it had been two years since Cate joined the Avalon Society. In these two years, Cate had worked very hard to make sure that her path towards the Keys of Chaos was unhindered. All the missions her team took on were successful. After ending their first mission with such great success, the team gained a lot of attention, and Cate capitalized on this to get the attention of the higher-ups.

In the past two years, Cate and her team handled seventeen missions. Ten of the missions were to investigate newly discovered ruins. They faced off against wraiths, vampires, and even mummies. Through these ten missions, Cate showed off her ability to lead her team, and while doing so, she made sure to stand out for her power, dedication, and loyalty to the society. Her name spread far and wide in the Immortal realm. She gained a lot of perks from society. For example, she was given better accommodation in the High City. Even though she did not need the new mansion since she already had a palace, she still accepted and even began living in this mansion for most of the time. This allowed her to keep her palace secret.

With two years, Cate had managed to bring order to her team. She had managed to do this by putting Albrecht and Jordan in their place. She made sure that the two would never get any ideas about challenging her. She had shown her power and great understanding of magic. They had been assigned three missions where they had to research obscure magics from forgotten civilizations, and Cate had used those missions as her chance to show what she could do. Her understanding of magic was unrivaled. With her in their team, the missions that had been deemed impossible were easily handled, with success being easily achieved.

The Avalon Society also had a few training grounds where members could come together and spar with magic and engage in hand-to-hand combat. These sessions were another way that allowed Cate to shore up her dominance in the team. No one could face her. She defeated Jordan and Albrecht whenever they faced her, and in some cases, she even encouraged the team to join forces and face her. Even then, Cate attained victory with just a few moves.

The teams in the Magic Research Bureau were ranked from best to worst. In just two years after her team was created, Cate led it to the number one position. This had never happened in the hundreds of years since the society had existed. Some of the teams had been around for decades, and Cate's team usurped their position in less than a decade. This sent shockwaves through society. Cate's team was soon given a special name to separate it from the others. It was called the Genesis Team. Cate did not know what they meant by this, but she did not care as long as her status in the Avalon society increased rapidly.

Over these past two years, the tension among team members had been greatly reduced, and it was barely noticeable now. Even Jordan, who had wanted to kill Cate by all means, no longer looked at her as the enemy. She had either matured or begun hiding her hatred much better. Cate had even begun joking and laughing around with Jordan. It was as though they were real sisters. Even Albrecht, the vampire who had hated Cate from the day they met, no longer felt that way or never showed this hatred. Cate had begun to rely on him in many situations. With his power, the vampire was very reliable in many situations. Cate had grown much closer to the Mage Born. In the entire team, the Mage Born was the only one who knew about Cate's palace. The Mage Born sometimes even stayed over, allowing the two to practice their magic for days. Over these two years, Cate's relationship with Mary had grown to reach a truly indomitable level.
