Chapter 3 - Burning

Liam carried his sister into the dilapidated house.

The wooden boards of the stairs creaked, and every step weighed on his heart.

My sister's room is at the back of the second floor, and there is a small bed there.

The sheets were pink with bunny rabbit designs on them.

That is my sister's favorite bed sheet. She kisses the little rabbit every day before going to bed.

Liam gently laid his sister on the bed and carefully tucked her in.

My sister's face was still pale, but she looked much more peaceful lying in her little bed.

"Goodnight, Lily."

He leaned over and gave his sister a kiss on the forehead.

The cold touch made his heart die completely.

Everything in the house made him sick.

Every time they had dinner, their adoptive parents let them stand by and watch.

That TV always plays a piercing noise.

The foster mother often sat on that sofa and directed them to work.

Every inch of space here is filled with painful memories.

Liam walked to the kitchen and turned on the gas stove.

The blue flames danced and made slight sounds.

He did not turn off the gas and allowed it to leak out.

Then he lit a match.

The flame flickered at his fingertips, and a small light illuminated his face.

The nine-year-old child did not show any fear in his eyes.

He walked into the living room and threw the matches on the sofa.

The tattered cloth instantly caught fire and the flames spread rapidly.

The smell of gas grew stronger and stronger, and the flames grew stronger and stronger.

Liam took one last look at his sister's room.

"No one will suffer here anymore."

He turned and walked out of the house, closing the door.

The night wind was cold, but he couldn't feel it.

Liam stood in the yard, looking at the house quietly.

Firelight shone through the windows, and the orange-red light wavered.

Soon, the whole house was engulfed in flames.

Flames licked the walls and the glass exploded in the high temperature.

"There's a fire!"

I don't know who is shouting in the distance.

"Call 119!"

"Is anyone in there?"

Neighbors came running out, some with buckets of water, some with fire extinguishers.

But the fire was too big to be put out.

The sirens of fire trucks came from a distance, getting closer and closer.

The red fire truck stopped in front of the house and the firefighters quickly launched a rescue operation.

The high-pressure water gun sprayed out a thick column of water, but the flame still burned tenaciously.

"Kid, are you okay?"

A middle-aged woman walked up to Liam and hugged him tenderly.

"My condolences, child."

Her voice was tearful and her eyes were full of sympathy.

"Your parents...they've..."

Liam said nothing, just stared at the flames.

The firelight reflected on his face, making him look unusually calm.

"Poor child."

"To lose a family member at such a young age."

"I heard he has a younger sister."

The people around were whispering, with regret in their voices.

The flames burned all night long.

By daybreak, the house had been reduced to ruins.

Black ashes flew in the wind and the air was filled with a burning smell.

Firefighters found three bodies in the rubble.

Two for adults and one for a child.

"The initial assessment was that the fire was caused by a gas leak."

The fire chief said to the police.

"The deceased should have suffocated in his sleep and felt no pain."

Liam was sent back to the orphanage.

The place where he once stayed has now become his home.

The dean was a kind old man, and when he saw Liam, his eyes were full of pity.

"Poor child, it's good to be back."

"This will be your home from now on."

Liam nodded but said nothing.

He walked into the dormitory where there were many children of the same age as him.

Some of the children looked at him curiously, while others were whispering.

"He's the kid whose house caught fire."

"I heard that his adoptive parents and sister are dead."

"How pitiful."

Liam climbed onto his own bed, which was by the window.

Through the window, he could see distant mountains and clouds.

At night, he lay in bed, looking up at the ceiling.

The other kids were already asleep and the dormitory was very quiet.

He was the only one with his eyes open, thinking about everything that had happened today.

His sister's face appeared in his mind, that pale little face.

"I avenged you."

He said silently in his heart.

The wolf head mark on his back felt slightly warm, reminding him that everything today was real.

He actually killed someone.

He literally lost his sister.

But he had no regrets.
