Chapter 5 - The Duke

Wearing a clothe he had never worn before. Nathan scan himself once again in bewilderment. Touching the pendant hanging on his neck given by Saemon awhile ago, he rub the smooth surface as Saemon's previous words play on his head.

"You need to wear this," he rolls his eyes before informing, "Since you lost your precious memory, let me tell you that this town is quiet far away from the capital," his eyes sharpened, "Unexpected things might happen."

After saying all of that, he left. Taking one more glance on his attire, Nathan walked out from the door with an unsatisfied expression. Saemon already told him the basics and surprisingly, he understood it more better than he thougth.

Remembering the route, he took one last turn on the right side and saw a light. As he finally stepped outside, he saw three people standing outside with serious expression on their faces.

"What took you so long? Do you know how precious every second and minute we wasted just to wait for you?" Saemon scolded and Nathan can see all the frustration building up on him. He pitifully thought, this guy might die early from stress. Saemon didn't share much information about himself but there's so many ways to know.

"Told you, he's literally scheming something." Alex insisted.

That again?

"Enough of that." Ruby demanded as her short red hair beautifully fluttered. She looked at me for a split second before walking out of the deck then firstly jumped down. She just jumped down the ship without any stairs or ladder.

Talk about crazy.

Unknowingly, Nathan's eyes adverted on Cassius who's been standing like a pillar. When their eyes meet, he heard him 'tsk'—ed before following along Ruby. He jumped down as Alex followed.

Saemon was about to jump when he suddenly turned his head to me. He spoke with an irritated tone, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up." As if he didn't hear him, Nathan calmly walked there and stood.

Saemon clicked his tougue before putting his hands on my waist then lifted me up. Surprised, Nathan was about to grip the edge of the wood as jumped down. Saemon released him after they landed down causing Nathan to stumble a little.

That bastard.

Saemon was already standing straight as he rub his palm together. He glance at Nathan before asking with an amused tone. "What? I helped you."

In disbelief, the corner of Nathan's lips curled up. Before he could even declare his thoughts, a feminine voice cut him off. "Let's don't waste more time here, Alex and I will go to the West, Saemon to the North and the two of you go to the East."

Without wasting any time the three already starts moving out, leaving Nathan and Cassius alone there. Too puzzled by the situation, he didn't realized that the other male was already walking to their direction.

Nathan dragged his feet and tried walking on the same pace as Cassius. Curiously, his head starts moving around the loud and crowded supermarket, they're selling things he haven't seen before. This world really is different just as Zaar said. And Nathan don't know why he find myself comfortable here.

Too occupied by his own thoughts, he bumped into someone. As he was about to apologize his body was suddenly pushed away causing him to fall on the ground again.

Is this my unlucky day?

"Hey, are you blind?!"

The sudden commotion grabbed the attention of the citizens. Some gasped, some run away, and some stayed as they silently watch.

With the help of his elbow, Nathan tried to stand up but a big hand grab the collar of his clothe and lifted his whole body easily. "I'm asking you a question, don't tell me you're a deaf too?"

"I-I'm sorry..." He managed to apologized but the tone of his voice was so low that the other person probably didn't hear him.

"What did you say?!"

He was suddenly pushed back but a hand thankfully catched his back. Without thinking twice, he already knew it was Cassius.

"He already apologized."

The man let out a laugh. People starts to stare at them with emotions that Nathan would know.

"And who should you be?"

Cassius didn't reply and just look at the man. He gripped his other hand that's resting on the sword hanging from the right side of his waist. Ready to attack.

"There they are!" Someone suddenly yelled and Nathan's attention catches the four people wearing an armor and holding a sword.

Cassius cursed as he drag Nathan. They run until they're finally far away from the commotion. Taking one last turn in the alley, Nathan was suddenly pushed back against the wall.

A loud groan escaped from his lips. With his brows furrowed, he stared at Cassius trying to ask him, 'what do you think you're doing?'

He licked his bottom before shouting in a whisper, "Hey, are you asking for a death wish, we haven't even stayed for five minutes yet you're already causing a trouble."

"What's your problem with me? I already apologized."

He snorted in disbelief. "Do you think a simple apology would cut it off? That's a fucking pirate over there, instead of an apology they would want your head instead."

Now that he mentioned that, Nathan remembered Saemon's warning. After putting the puzzles together, Nathan was surprised that he was in the hands of a pirates but eventually accepted whatever fate he was put into. According to the books he have read and movies he watched, pirates were described as greedy, notorious, and merciless people.

Fame isn't enough to feed their greed. They need a power to conquer something and have it in their grasp that nobody else could ever take.

"Don't get in my way and just follow me quietly, fucking idiot."

Cassius turned his heels before starting to walk out through the dark alley. Without his knowing, Nathan swung his arms in the air wishing he could punch that jerk's face before following along behind him.

After the long walk and nobody seems to be following them, they entered a small shop. The door automatically shut behind gaining Nathan's curiousity. When he turned around, he saw a bunch of weapons. There were shields and spears hanging on the walls, you can practically find everything you need here.

"Good day, Sir. Do you need something?" A man on his 50's appeared with a kind smile on his face.

"Your latest weapon here."

"What kind of weapon are you looking for?"

"A gun."

"Ah, yes. We have it here."

A gun? Isn't this supposed to be armors and swords or spears?

Carrying two boxes each on his hand. The man carefully put them down on the table before opening the lid.

It was both a pocket pistol. The owner put out one model with a small bullet.

"This is one of my latest made gun, it weights over 6.001 kilograms and it weights the same as the other gun but the bullets were different."

His trembling hand picked up the gold bullet then the black one. "This one could kill any living creature," he said indicating for the gold bullet. "And for this one, It's for the extincts."

Extincts?

My browns knitted in puzzlement. Like they live among humans or is he indicating something else? Saemon didn't mention any of that to Nathan.

Nathan watch as Cassius examined one of those bullets before inquiring. "Can this kill a demon as well?" Nathan felt like his soul just left his body.

Demon? They exists? So you're saying I'm living into a world of chaos?

The owner gulped before admitting. "I'm so sorry but I cannot provide that, you can only find those things in Orz or Urel."

Orz. A place where criminals was thrown and people who has been exiled went to that place. It's no surprise if you will see a bunch of slums and dead bodies everywhere there. To simply put, that place is the real definition of 'chaos'. No one can scape from that place. Meanwhile, Urel Kingdom exists, Saemon mentioned that it's a peaceful country where everyone wish to live.

"I'll purchase the gun."

"50, Sir."

Silence surrounded the room.

"20."

"45."

"25."

"40."

Cassius hissed. Nathan was so confuse when they suddenly start answering each other with numbers. They were talking about the price. Coins doesn't exists into this world, they pay gold instead. The more abundant the gold the higher the amount.

"30."

"Sold." The owner showed his wily smile before putting the gun back into the box then slide it towards the client who's loosening the small rope around his waist.

He carefully touch the small pouch and put it on the table. Excitedly, the man opened it and his eyes twinkled.

That must have been a beautiful sight to see. It really must be.

Just like before, Cassius starts leaving without notifying Nathan again. Thus, he swiftly followed behind him as the bustling crowd greets them once again.

Golvion Kingdom.

This is apparently where they are right now. Every kingdom has their own pride and power and this country symbolizes a sword. You will see knights everywhere but this town is far from the capital so there are less knights here or there could be nothing at all.

"Two-Hundred years ago, when the war between the Spade and Golvion kingdom broke out, this town was the most massacred place among the rest. Those things you heard about the deceased duke are all a bunch of nonsense."

Nathan steps halted, those words piqued his curiosity. There are people gathered around, mostly children are sitting on the ground as they watch and listen to the old man.

"The duke didn't die with pride and dignity, he killed himself."

"But mama said that the duke die because he sacrificed himself to his kingdom." One of the kids seated on the ground says.

The old man smiled. "Well then, your mama is wrong, the duke didn't sacrifice himself to the kingdom. Who do you think tried to save this town except from the duke?"

When no one spoke, the old man continues. "The duke is a coward and nothing else, dignity? He doesn't have that. Who would sacrifice his own child for his own benefits?"

"You mean the dukes daughter, Margarette?"

"Bingo." The old man straightened his posture. "You heard stories about her being married to a kind man and having a wonderful life but that is also a lie. None of that happened."

"But how did you know about all of this?" A woman asked.

The old man tap his forehead as he says, "History."

That sounds so cryptic.

"Now that's some plot twist in there." Nathan's head instincly turned on his side, he saw a man standing tall beside him as he watch the old man as well. He turned his head to Nathan then smiled.

"Hi, the name's Robert."

Nathan didn't repond to the suspicious man as it let out a small laugh. "I'm sorry if I scared you. My crewmates also says that the more I become friendly, the more scarier I become."

Recieving no another answer from the stranger, Robert returned his attention back into the old man. Nathan did the same thing and listened carefully.

"The duke killed himself before the war because he was scared. On the other hand, his daughter was abducted and perhaps...killed."

"That sounds so dissapointing." Robert expressed with a sad face. "So the rumors about that sword hidden on the duke's mansion was also a lie?"

"Sword?"

"Hm. That sword which killed an ancient dragon five—hundred—years ago. It's in the hands of the duke's ancestors for the past seven—hundred—years."

Nathan curiously asked. "Why are they trying to find it?"

"Well, legend says that if someone found that sword and bring it back where the ancient dragon lies, they will have to make one wish and it will come true."

That's some bullshit.

"But that sword killed the dragon, moreover, it was already a carcass."

Robert turn his head to the stranger with a smile lingering on his lips. "That's a one good point. However, people already believe that such a legend exists but as of now, they're still trying to find it."

Then why are they still trying to find it when there's absolutely nothing in there?

Unexpectedly, lightning strike from the sky as a loud thunder followed. Nathan looked up from the sky which is now covered in black then a raindrop dropped on his cheeks. Everyone starts running away because of the rain.

"It's nice meeting you..."

"Nathan."

"Nathan." He repeated before running off, completely blending in the crowds.

The rain starts to get heavier as a hand grabbed the back of his collar aggressively. "What the heck are you doing here?! I told you to follow me!"

Before Nathan could even speak, Cassius was already pulling him along. Another lighting strike from the sky, a loud thunder followed afterwards causing the ground to shake a little but Cassius didn't seem to mind.

Pain, Nathan suddenly felt the pain creeping up into his brain. His steps halted as he grab his head. Scenes starts flashing in his mind, he was running, breathless, with blood all over his body, there was someone running after him.

What was that?

His breathing became unstable, he tap his chest hard trying to find a way to breathe and calm his pounding heart but it was all in vain when he could hear a loud vibration in his brain. Nathan saw Cassius yelling? Saying something? But he can't hear him.

Slowly but surely, his vision starts to fade away. All that he could remember is falling down.

Somewhere in Orz.

On the dark alley, the heavy rain castated down the cemented ground. With a meticulous steps, a figure walked through the dark alley. Warily, they turned their head behind, once confirming that no one is following behind. It continued to move forward until it arrives infront of an abandoned house.

Without hesitation, they opened the door as a loud 'creak'—ing sound surrounds the silent and dark house. Afterwards, the door was shut and the figure slowly took few steps towards center and stood as a chanting sound filled the room.

Once it stopped, all of a sudden, a tall figure appeared. It was a man—no—that's not the right way to describe him. No normal man nor human can emit such a heavy and dark aura. A sinister smirk makes it's way to his lips.

"You took a while to decide."

The other person—human—took off the hood of his cloak revealing a manly face before demanding with a heavy heart. "I will sell my soul."

"Is that your final decision? Being a demon isn't easy, especially when those bastards still exists."

It was a hard decision to make. However, the person have already had enough time to decide and he needed power. Not to empower other people but to survive. Yes, to survive and get his revenge.

"Are you prepared to get burn and disappear into thin air once they found you?"

He gulped hard. That was a threatening remark. Selling a soul isn't like selling an apple in a supermarket. If your favourite fruit is an apple and an orange and you only have a few money to buy one, what would you choose?

It isn't the matter which is more bigger or delicious. It's a matter of choosing whether you won't regret your decisions in the end after buying one between them. And just like our life, we need to make decisions.

Decisions we wished we would never regret in the end.

"Yes. It's my final decision."

A malicious grin makes it's way on the demons lips as he proudly say, "I understand."

All of a sudden, the male felt something squeezing his heart. His breathing became unstable as he fell on the ground on his knees. Opening his mouth, he gasp for air but he felt like he's breathing a smoke.

A headache followed afterwards causing him to scream in pain. The demon whistled as he walk around the human who's suffering infont of his eyes as if he's taking a stroll, the smile on his lips never leaving as he watch in full amusement.

The groaning continues for a whole minute. The demon felt something pumping on his chest. It succeded. The human is now a demon just like him.

"What does it feel? The power flowing through your veins, knowledge you never thought you would ever have?"

Delighted. Powerful. That's what the human feltright now. His face and neck was covered in sweat as he slowly stood up and stare at the veins on his body moving with traces of color black on them. He felt...powerful. Too powerful.

He came to realize. "So this is what it means to be a demon." With this power, he can get his revenge.

"Congratulations, you're finally a demon now. But first, let me tell you something fundamental first."

The demon raised his index finger.

"Firstly, my name is Caesar."

Caesar raised his thumb.

"Secondly, avoid people from the Urel Kingdom."

Caesar put his hand behind back as he circle around the new demon. He stopped right infront of him with a serious expression on his face as he said in a cold and deep voice. "Lastly, if you see someone carrying a sword covered in a white scabbard. Run as fast as you can."

The human listened well but what does the Urel citizens has to do with demons? He couldn't understand it at all.

"And demons can read minds as well." Caesar tapped his head as he repeated. "We can read what's going on inside their minds. Use your power well." And with that, Caesar dissapeared leaving only the other demon behind.

He had a new identity to live and a power he holds now. This is already enough for him to survive. This place is filled of malicious and brutal people, living as a demon among humans made no much difference.

And with that, he left the wrecked house and walk on a familliar path. Little did he know, Caesar was watching him through the window. Once the human disappeared from his sight, he finally spoke.

"Did you find him?"

"Yes. Is the plan going to be executed right away?"

"Not for now. How about Zaar, did you find him?"

"That...there's no trace of him."

Caesar let out a chuckle. "Those bastards, they're demons indeed. How dare they betray me." It's an eye for an eye. They will top into the world as long as you have powers, the three of them promised that. They will make their own world and they will rule it. It's even funny how demons could do such a thing.

With a determined expression, he promised.

"I'll kill them with my own two hands."
