Chapter 19: Whispers of the Whip
"Okay, Senate hearing was a smashing success. I mean, not for the senators, obviously. They looked like they were trying to conduct a formal inquiry while simultaneously wrestling a sentient hotdog. Good times. But now, it's time to move on to the next big bad: Ivan Vanko. The guy with the electric whips and a really bad grudge against the Stark family. Honestly, it's always about daddy issues, isn't it? Well, time to start poking around in his life. Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that a little bit of pre-emptive chaos can go a long way in ruining a supervillain's perfectly good revenge plot."
The aftermath of the Senate hearing played out exactly as Alex predicted. Tony Stark emerged victorious, reaffirming his ownership of Iron Man and cementing his maverick image. The government, particularly Senator Stern, looked less like a formidable authority and more like a collection of bewildered uncles trying to understand a newfangled video game. This public win for Tony, unintended by Alex but a happy byproduct of his mischief, provided a brief lull in direct governmental pressure.
Alex, however, wasn't resting on his laurels. His "Masterful Hacking (Network & Device)" skill felt more refined, almost an extension of his own thoughts. He could now move through complex systems with a speed and precision that would make professional hackers weep with envy. He was ready for the next big threat: Ivan Vanko. He knew Vanko was already out there, festering with resentment, slowly building his Whiplash tech.
"Alright, Ivan. Your revenge plot is quaint. A little too much 'electricity and angst' for my tastes. And frankly, your fashion choices need a serious upgrade. But hey, I'm not here to judge your villain aesthetic. I'm here to subtly mess with your plans until you're convinced the universe itself is conspiring against you. Which, technically, it is. Because I'm in it."
He initiated a broad digital dragnet, targeting Russian industrial intelligence, obscure engineering forums, and even dark web marketplaces for high-grade electronics. He was looking for anomalies, for anything that hinted at advanced, unsanctioned weapon development. He found whispers first: mentions of unusual power surges in rural facilities, inquiries about specific, rare metallurgical components, and a curious surge in demand for specialized arc reactor schematics – not Tony's, but theoretical, dangerous alternatives.
His "Situational Awareness (Tactical)" provided a deeper, almost instinctual understanding of the global power players. He knew that the government, chastened by the Stane fiasco, would be increasing their scrutiny on rogue tech. This meant Alex needed to be even more careful. The shadowy cyber-security initiative he'd detected earlier was still out there, lurking, still tracking digital anomalies. He kept them busy by occasionally injecting false leads into their systems, sending them chasing phantom cyber-ghosts in distant, irrelevant corners of the internet.
"Distraction is an art form. It's not about outright lying; it's about providing just enough believable nonsense to send them off on a wild goose chase. And if that goose chase happens to involve a digital wild hog that squeals when you try to trace it, well, that's just a bonus."
He focused his search on a specific region in Russia, leveraging his knowledge of Vanko's backstory. He managed to breach a low-level government server that handled utility data for rural areas. There, buried deep within millions of lines of code, he found it: a series of consistent, high-energy power draws from an isolated, unregistered facility. The pattern was erratic, spiking violently, consistent with the testing of high-power, unstable weaponry.
Cross-referencing this with publicly available satellite imagery (which he enhanced with his hacking skills to reveal more detail), he could just make out the faint outline of a secluded complex, heavily shielded, but definitely there. Vanko. He was there. And he was building.
Alex felt a cold, calculated ruthlessness settle over him. Vanko was a known quantity, a future threat. Alex could subtly undermine his work, perhaps corrupt some of his early designs, or plant false data that would lead to manufacturing flaws. He wasn't aiming to stop Vanko completely – the plot needed Vanko to exist for Iron Man 2 to happen – but he could make Vanko's journey infinitely more difficult, frustrating, and prone to spectacular failure.
He spent hours studying Vanko's rudimentary hacking attempts, his early designs, the theoretical flaws that would eventually plague his Whiplash suit. Alex began to construct a series of subtle, digital traps within the dark corners of the internet where Vanko sourced his information. He left corrupted data packets disguised as valuable schematics, coded logical errors into open-source engineering software, and even created a fake online persona that casually "leaked" misleading advice on plasma conduits.
This was more than just mischief; it was strategic sabotage. He was not just irritating Vanko; he was systematically trying to make Vanko's work harder, his progress slower, and his eventual confrontation with Tony Stark even more chaotic and unpredictable for Vanko himself. His own anonymity remained paramount. The government was looking for big, obvious digital footprints. Alex was a whisper in the machine, a phantom of the network, leaving no trace.
