Chapter 24: The Unwitting Witness

"Alright, round two of 'Government Grills Super-Geniuses and Then Gets Humiliated.' This time, our star witness is none other than Ivan Vanko, the guy who tried to turn the Monaco Grand Prix into a scene from Mad Max. And he's probably going to be feeling pretty smug, thinking he's got all the answers. Bless his little vengeful heart. But he's about to find out that when you're dealing with the government, and a digital phantom like me, things can get… weird. Really, really weird. Time to put on a show!"

The news filtered into Alex's warehouse: Ivan Vanko was being brought in to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Justin Hammer, ever the opportunist, had leveraged the Monaco incident and Vanko's capture to position himself as the solution to the Iron Man problem, promising an army of drones. This hearing was Hammer's big chance to shine, and Vanko's chance to publicly condemn Tony Stark. For Alex, it was another golden opportunity for high-impact, public mischief.

His "Omni-Network Manipulation (Strategic)" was humming with the possibilities. This wasn't just about making people look foolish; it was about shaping narratives, subtly enabling events, and ensuring maximum entertainment value. He knew the general arc: Vanko would be brought in, give his testimony, and then, inevitably, escape. Alex intended to make that escape as embarrassing and chaotic for the authorities as possible, while simultaneously ensuring Vanko's eventual public demonstration at the Expo would be utterly flawed.

"Oh, the delicious irony! They bring in the guy who just tried to murder Tony on live television, put him on a stage, and expect him to play nice? That's like inviting a badger to a tea party and expecting it not to maul the silverware. And I, for one, am here to subtly hand the badger a bigger fork."

Alex began his preparations. He focused on the courthouse's internal network, the teleconferencing systems, and the media feeds. He knew security would be tighter this time, but tightened security often meant more rigid protocols, and rigid protocols meant predictable vulnerabilities for a skilled digital phantom.

He planned a dual-pronged attack. First, a subtle, yet infuriating, digital assault on the government's presentation itself. He accessed the presentation software the prosecution would be using, and inserted a series of subliminal glitches. Whenever a key piece of "evidence" was displayed, the text might momentarily shift to an absurd font, or a small, animated GIF of a tap-dancing squirrel might appear in the corner of the screen for a split second, only to vanish before anyone could definitively prove they saw it.

"Imagine, Senator Stern, mid-sentence, trying to make a serious point about national security, and behind him, a tiny, tap-dancing squirrel is having a party on the main screen. It's not a hack. It's performance art. And it's going to make him look absolutely unhinged."

Second, and more crucially, he prepared for Vanko's escape. Alex knew Vanko would likely use some remote access or a pre-programmed device. Alex found a subtle back door in the very secure network that controlled Vanko's holding cell and his transport vehicle. He didn't open it. He prepared it to be subtly triggered by an external event, like a sudden surge in the building's power grid – something he could remotely initiate with his "Omni-Network Manipulation" without leaving a direct trace.

He also found vulnerabilities in the security camera feeds within the courthouse. He wouldn't disable them. Instead, he planned to subtly alter them, creating momentary, yet utterly baffling, distortions just at key moments of Vanko's escape. A guard might momentarily see themselves in a chicken costume. The walls might appear to ripple like water. Just enough to cause confusion and doubt.

"Because what's better than a supervillain escaping? A supervillain escaping while the guards are convinced they're hallucinating. It adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the whole dramatic sequence. And a lot of future therapy bills for the security detail. I consider it a public service."

He watched Justin Hammer preening for the cameras, talking about his superior technology and his newfound partnership with Vanko. Alex felt a cold satisfaction. Hammer was oblivious to the subtle digital toxins he had injected into his systems, toxins that would ensure his public demonstration would be less impressive innovation and more spectacular failure.

As the day of the hearing approached, Alex finalized his preparations. He was ready. He was the ghost, the unseen force, the master of subtle, infuriating chaos. And soon, the world would witness another carefully orchestrated performance, with the US government as the unwitting co-stars and Ivan Vanko as the spectacularly flawed, escaping lead.
