Chapter 23: Corrupting the Code

"Alright, now that I've successfully ensured Tony's sanity is just barely clinging on by a thread, and Hammer's looking more and more like a clown, it's time to really get to work on Vanko. Because while he's busy crafting his flashy whips and his army of useless drones, I'm going to be planting little digital time bombs in his code. Think of it as a pre-emptive strike, but instead of missiles, it's just really, really annoying bugs. Bugs that will make his grand entrance less 'terrifying villain' and more 'guy whose PowerPoint presentation keeps crashing.' The future of public humiliation is now!"

From his secure warehouse, now even more robustly protected against the nascent cyber-security initiative, Alex dedicated himself to the systematic corruption of Vanko's work. His newly upgraded "Omni-Network Manipulation (Strategic)" skill was a revelation. It wasn't just hacking anymore; it was an innate understanding of how all digital systems interconnected, how to exploit their fundamental logic, how to twist their intended purpose. He could see the intricate dance of data, the delicate balance of code, and knew precisely where to insert the proverbial wrench.

Hammer Industries' network was, as anticipated, a sieve. Justin Hammer, more concerned with flashy presentations than actual security, had left ample backdoors and vulnerabilities. Alex slipped through them like a ghost, an undetectable presence within the heart of Vanko's operations.

"Hammer's security strategy seems to be based on the principle of 'ignorance is bliss.' And while that might work for personal happiness, it's a terrible plan when a highly motivated digital phantom is trying to turn your death robots into glorified disco balls. But hey, who am I to judge? I just profit from their incompetence."

He focused his efforts directly on Ivan Vanko's designs for the Hammer Drones and the Whiplash suit. He accessed the core schematics, the programming languages, the diagnostic tools. He wasn't aiming for immediate, noticeable errors. That would just make Vanko fix them. Alex was far more insidious.

He introduced subtle logical flaws into the drone's core operating systems. These weren't bugs that would crash the drones on startup. Instead, they were conditional errors, designed to manifest only under specific, high-stress circumstances, like during a large-scale public demonstration. For example, he coded a tiny, almost imperceptible delay in the drone's targeting acquisition sequence, or a slight, intermittent miscalibration in their flight stabilization, just enough to make them less precise, less efficient, and prone to unexpected, comical deviations.

For the Whiplash suit itself, he targeted the energy conduit systems. He introduced a subtle, fluctuating resistance in the plasma whip's power flow, designed to cause momentary, unpredictable power fluctuations. This would manifest as the whips sometimes flickering, momentarily losing intensity, or even briefly changing color to an absurd shade (like neon pink) before reverting. Again, not catastrophic, but maddeningly inconsistent.

"Imagine, Vanko, standing on stage, looking all menacing, and then your terrifying plasma whips suddenly decide to turn into sparkly rainbow streamers. The look on his face? Priceless. My personal highlight reel will feature that moment on a loop, set to elevator music. It's art."

Alex also subtly altered some of the diagnostic routines for the drones and the suit. Whenever Vanko ran a system check, the diagnostics would occasionally return seemingly perfect results, even when an underlying flaw existed. Or, even more frustratingly, they would return cryptic, nonsensical error codes, like "Error 404: Dignity Not Found" or "System Overload: Too Much Awesome." This was designed to make Vanko question his own debugging skills, to slowly erode his confidence in his own engineering.

He also planted a series of "digital tripwires" within Hammer Industries' network. These were designed to detect any significant attempts by Hammer or Vanko to introduce external, unauthorized elements into their systems – for instance, Vanko's eventual remote control of the drones. If triggered, these tripwires wouldn't stop the action, but they would immediately alert Alex, giving him real-time insight into their plans and allowing him to react instantly.

He observed Vanko's reaction to his early tests of the modified tech. Vanko would scream in frustration as a drone veered unexpectedly, or as his whips briefly sputtered. Hammer, of course, blamed Vanko's temperamental nature, oblivious to the digital phantom sowing chaos within his company.

Alex maintained his ironclad anonymity, weaving his digital presence through so many layers of global networks that tracing him was a theoretical impossibility. The shadowy cyber-security initiative was still active, but Alex kept them chasing their tails with more elaborate digital wild goose chases, convinced they were tracking a distributed, sophisticated, state-sponsored cyber-terrorist group rather than one sarcastic guy in a warehouse.
