Chapter 99 - Two Lines Intersecting

The setting sun hung high over Gotham City, dusting the towering skyscrapers with a golden sheen.

"Alfred, report!"

A roaring Batcycle, carrying a man clad in a black Batsuit, tore through the streets and alleys of Gotham City.

Alfred's voice came through the comms.

The old man stood before the monitors in the Batcave.

On the League of Assassins' blue screen, countless displays occasionally erupted in a burst of white static, indicating they had been forcibly destroyed.

"I regret to inform you, Master Bruce, they have begun their operation."

Alfred was somewhat surprised by the League of Assassins' swift action.

Efficient and concise, like a well-organized engine, with each part operating in an orderly fashion.

"Have you found any trace of them?"

"Based on the pattern of the camera outages..."

Alfred observed the screen and concluded, "They're advancing from four directions of the city. If they maintain this rate of progress, their target will be City Hall, where Mayor Mark's office is located."

"I understand."

A grave expression appeared on Batman's face.

He had once received systematic training and education from the League of Assassins.

Batman had to understand the League of Assassins' operational patterns.

When they want to invade a city, they're like termites, gnawing away at it from the inside.

They assassinate the officials and departments that control the city, paralyzing its functions and its security, and then they can easily destroy it.

Batman twisted the throttle of the Batmobile. The vehicle roared as blue flames shot from the motorcycle exhaust, carrying him toward the city center.

Wayne Tower, the original site.

This ancient clock tower, built in 1880, was overseen by Alan Wayne.

The building had twelve Gargoyle Statues, each overlooking a major route into and out of Gotham City.

The five Gargoyle Statues on the first floor kept watch over Gotham's earliest access points: three bridges and two tunnels.

The bridges were busy with traffic.

Chaotic Gotham City was like a seductive, alluring starlet, drawing the scum of the world to its embrace, and with them, a host of unspeakable black market dealings.

"Vroom~"

A heavy transport truck was slowly making its way towards the Gotham Bridge.

If Gino were present, he would be able to see the oddly shaped metal missile inside the metal container. He would also see the assassins guarding the dirty bomb.

The assassins, in pairs, kept watch on the scenes outside the glass of the container.

A black motorcycle flashed past the windows. The assassins exchanged glances and immediately spoke into their headsets: "Leader, we've spotted Batman. He's on a motorcycle, and he seems to be heading towards the city center."

In the sewers beneath City Hall, Ra's al Ghul ended the communication and glanced at a few of his subordinates.

They lowered their heads and turned to leave the tunnel, intending to set up a trap to stop the masked vigilante.

Ra's al Ghul stared at a concrete wall, a ghastly smile twisting his gaunt face.

"Batman? A foolish name."

He tightened his grip on the Katana at his back and pressed the button on his earpiece: "Ignore him. Leave Batman to me."

He was quite curious to see just how strong this Batman, the one making a name for himself in Gotham City, truly was.

The wind whipped around the mask, billowing the black cape. Batman, focused on the road ahead, steered his motorcycle through a narrow alley, heading towards City Hall. He had to protect this city; it was his mission.

The setting sun cast its rays across the buildings and into the alley.

The harsh glare forced Batman to squint.

But, the angle of the light's reflection allowed his eyes to catch something out of the ordinary.

Stretched across the path of the motorcycle, a gleaming, razor-sharp steel wire lay in wait for its intended victim.

Batman recognized the object.

A killing weapon frequently used by the League of Assassins.

When someone charged past at an extremely fast speed, the sharp steel wire would turn into a deadly blade, slicing and tearing their body apart.

Bruce didn't hesitate. He immediately slammed on the brakes, stomping his foot onto the ground. Using the motorcycle's inertia, he kicked the fuel tank with his other leg, then gracefully slid into a corner of the alley, landing in a pile of trash.

The out-of-control motorcycle slammed into the steel wire.

The sharp wire, made of an unknown steel, sliced the vehicle apart.

Boom!

The high-performance motorcycle, worth tens of millions of dollars, exploded with a bang. The scorching heat wave surged upwards, illuminating the dark alley.

Swish!

At the instant the vehicle exploded in a raging inferno, several assassins hidden in the shadows attacked simultaneously.

Four sharp Katanas lunged toward Batman from four directions.

"Snikt!"

As the blades tore through his uniform, Batman retaliated.

"Wham!"

His thick, powerful arm seized a ninja's wrist and flung him away, while his body shifted back to avoid a blade piercing his chest.

He raised his left leg and kicked with all his might, striking an assassin's jaw and knocking him out. Then, he sidestepped another ferocious attack.

"Ugh!" Batman grunted, rolling on the ground and flipping his wrist to launch several Batarangs.

Clang! Clang! Two assassins deflected the Batarangs with their Katanas, the blades clashing and sending sparks flying.

At the same time, the assassin who had been knocked away stumbled to his feet and charged at Batman again, Katana raised.

The man saw the blade aimed at his chest. He took two steps back, his right foot planted against the wall. At the moment the blade struck, he pushed off with incredible force, performing a backflip at an impossible angle and slamming his elbow into the assassin's neck mid-air.

"Another one down!"

Batman landed smoothly, picked up a discarded Katana, and flipped the blade so it faced him.

The two remaining warriors exchanged a glance, then charged at Batman simultaneously.

Thwack! Thwack!

The backs of the Katanas slammed into the two assassins, knocking them unconscious. Batman dropped the blades. His incredible reflexes and execution allowed him to easily overcome the crisis.

But the corners of the mouth visible beneath the mask were turned slightly downward, displaying an unhappy expression.

Batman's mood was somewhat poor.

The League of Assassins had actually managed to intercept him, which meant they had discovered him.

Simply put, he was exposed.

"I need to relocate."

As a master strategist, Batman knew he had to change his position to avoid the endless stream of assassins from wearing him down.

His sharp eyes, behind the bat-cowl, swept over a manhole cover on the side of the road. He sighed, thinking his cape was going to get dirty again.

This was not good. He remembered Alfred had lectured him for quite a while last time.

And the smell in the underground passage was also unpleasant.

But for the plan, Batman still lifted the manhole cover and jumped into the passage.

Not long after the masked knight of Gotham City left, the stooped figure of Ra's al Ghul also appeared in the alley.

The man tugged at his green cloak, looking at the unconscious assassin lying on the ground.

He picked up the Batarang on the ground, and then looked at the footprints that extended from the muddy alley all the way to the sewer, the smile on his face growing thicker.

What a coincidence. He had just climbed up from the sewer on the other side, but the other party had jumped into the sewer.
