Chapter 20 - CHAPTER TWENTY:The Ledger Bleeds

The soul ledger had always been inert.

Just ink.

Names. Symbols. Memories long forgotten.

Until now.

---

Back in the tower room — the one no student dares to use — Haera and Cairos spread the ancient book across the cracked desk. Moonlight slants in through the stained-glass window, casting ghost-colored patterns on the pages.

The ledger hums beneath their fingertips. As if alive.

Haera flips to the page with her name — and it changes as she stares.

> HAERA SOL

Cycle 23: Interference detected

Previous Deaths: 19

Current Status: Split soul — merging initiated

Her breath hitches. "Split…?"

Before she can ask, blood seeps up from the page.

Bright red.

Warm.

Wet.

It pools beneath her name — not from her, not from Cairos… from the book itself.

---

Then it begins to write.

In scrawled, frantic script:

> "The Watcher has rewritten the path."

"You must seal the ledger before the eclipse."

"One soul must willingly burn for the others to live."

Cairos stares at the ink. "Burn…?"

Haera's hands tremble.

Another line appears.

> "You've loved him in every life, but only once have you let him die."

She closes the book.

Too hard.

The desk shudders.

---

Cairos doesn't speak.

But his eyes say it all.

This ends with one of them gone.

Unless they change the script.

---

He takes her hand. "There's something I haven't shown you."

---

They leave the tower and descend into the oldest wing of the school — the one shuttered by magic and time. Behind a crumbling tapestry, Cairos reveals a hidden passage. No symbols. Just stone.

It opens when he presses his palm to it.

Inside is a vault of relics — soulmarks, memory coins, cursed objects sealed in glass.

And one thing glowing like a star swallowed in shadow:

A blank ledger.

Empty.

Unwritten.

---

"I stole it," he says.

"From where?"

"From the Watcher."

---

Haera touches it.

It glows.

Warmer than the old one.

Alive.

Hopeful.

---

"This ledger doesn't carry the past," Cairos whispers. "It writes only what you choose now."

Haera stares at the empty pages.

So white.

So new.

---

And she speaks the words that change everything:

> "Then let this be our last rewrite."

"Our final version."

"The one where we both live."

---

The moment the words leave her mouth, the old ledger screams.

It bursts into flame.

The fire is silver. Silent. Consuming only the cursed pages.

---

The new ledger vibrates.

Its first line forms:

> Cycle 24 – Anomaly acknowledged.

This timeline is now ungoverned.

The Watcher cannot control what is born from love freely chosen.

---

Cairos steps closer.

"You did it."

She shakes her head. "We did."

---

And far away, inside the vaulted halls of the Watcher's stronghold, a thousand bound souls stir.

Some weep.

Some scream.

And some smile.

---

Because love has done what nothing else could:

It broke the page.
