Chapter 3 - [3] Race of the hearts

The midday sun filters into the Toretto's Market & Café through the open bay door and amber glass windows, casting soft shadows over the familiar worn tile floor and well-loved counters.

Walking into the Cafe, no shirt, wet hair still a little more wet than just damp, I'd needed a shower after sleeping in so late after working throughout the night, on my car.

The air inside the cafe is cool, the smell of fresh bread and cooking meats makes my stomach rumble.

Mia glances up from behind the counter, her eyes landing on me…widening and lingering for a second or two too long to be respectful, I do my best not to smirk as I catch a faint flush bleed into her cheeks as she over fills a glass of what I believe to iced tea from the looks of the pitcher.

"What happened…lose your shirt in a race, like you're going to lose to me, or is this just good timing?" Mia teases, while trying to sound nonchalant as she wipes up the spilt teat, but there's a little husky crack in her voice that betrays her.

I smirk, as I walk up to and lean on the counter, resting my knuckles on the smooth polished red board, resting the underside of my chin on my hands.

"Just showing off what you could win…" I say to her and wink suggestively, which in turn makes Mia giggle, "So...after making that deal with you…I had some motivation...to finish my mods to my car, worked till dawn to get her ready."

Mia smiles, leans in closer. "Really? You must have a really special reason to stay up all night…" Mia asks playfully, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.

"Yeah...well you are something special." I say, dropping my voice just enough to convey my honest feelings…I feel a little embarrassed about saying such things but am rewarded by Mia's face gaining an even deeper flush of color Mia looks away from me obviously flustered by my words but also smiling.

Mia turns around showing me her back and her short skirt that just barely brushes below her ass. Mia starts making me a sandwich without me even asking, "So...your car's finished?" Mia asks and I can hear the excitement in her voice.

"Tuned, tested, and freshly cleaned and waxed…she's ready... whenever you are." I say and my gaze sliding down Mia's long toned and tanned legs as my fingers drum against the counter top. "So…I was kinda…maybe hoping we could keep this race just between us…it is my race…and well…I'd also kinda like to be just us no crowd, no flag girls just you me our cars and an empty stretch of black top."

Mia pauses midway through slicing cold cuts, "You're not trying to lure me away and do awful things to me are you?" Mia asks me in a teasing way that shows me that she isn't serious.

I grin at her…"No, that comes after…the race." I tease right back, Mia looks over her shoulder at me and rolls her eyes but the smile on her face is infectious.

"Okay, Buster…I'm closing up the store at eight." Mia says as she finishes making me a sub, the same one I ordered yesterday.

Then grabs a napkin and a pen, writes down an address, "Meet me here at eight thirty…it's a little known racing spot, we shouldn't have any guests…" Mia murmurs with a soft smile on her face and hopeful doe eyes.

"Heh, I'd boost a cop car to be there." I say to Mia honestly and the smile that lights up her face is just so damn bright I can feel my eyes burning.

Mia slides me a glass of sweet iced tea and pours some chips into my plate. Letty comes into the Market/Cafe, takes one very very long look at me, smiles at Mia and then proceeds to drag her off into what I believe is a store room.

"Watch the store Blondie, little Sis and I have to talk for a minute." Letty hollers over her shoulder to me and I shrug, before smiling as Mia shoots me an apologetic look over her shoulder, "Letty!" Mia says in a complaint filled exasperated tone of voice.

Which makes me laugh, "Hey, you're not supposed to laugh at me!" Mia complains in mock offense, "Sorry, but I'm not sorry…" I say right back to her and hear Letty snickering.

"Oh my god, he's so fit…and he looks so dreamy!" Mia whispers loudly to Letty who smirks and pictures Brian in her head.

"Yeah, he's yummy…so are you gonna drop this whole race thing and bring that hot man back here and have your way with him?" Letty asks teasingly and pinches at Mia's exposed midriff.

"Oww, and no…he's so sweet he worked through the night so we could go have a race sooner…" Mia mumbles with a bit of shyness.

"Oh, maldita sea, es tan sexy." Letty mutters while peeking out of the store room door to watch Braian eat with a thirsty look on her face.

Mia smiles softly at Letty's facial expression, 'I hope she moves on from Dom…as much as I love her and Dom…Dom doesn't deserve her not with the bullshit he pulls. But if…they..do end things, will Letty and I grow apart?' Mia wonders and thinks, she doesn't like that her mind tells her yes that they'll grow apart.

The sun dips below the horizon as I arrive at the overlook on Mulholland; the city stretches out below me like a sea of twinkling and blinking lights.

Getting out of my car, closing the driver's side door and leaning back against it, 'Should I have remained shirtless?' I wonder, and I'm not sure how long I wait but it isn't too long before Mia pulls up beside me in her electric/baby blue 1994 Acura Integra GS-R, she revs her engine before letting it idle down to a quiet purr.

She steps out in a figure hugging white knit/crochet dress that exposes a tasteful amount of her cleavage, and the bottom hem rests just low enough to be skimpy and not slutty, hair tied back, face free of makeup, and I'll be damned, if she doesn't look better than any girl I've ever taken to dinner.

"So…there's…no crowd, ready to lose?" Mia asks while crossing her arms underneath her breasts and strutting forwards, stopping a little less than a foot away from me.

"Hmm…you know I said no crowds…but I didn't consider other distractions." I tease Mia.

Mia smirks back, "Oh and what other distractions are there?" Mia asks teasingly as she takes a look around, "Hmm…nope not seeing much in ways of distractions…" Mia continues to be playful, I tentatively reach out and cup her chin index finger underneath it, thumb coming to rest just against her bottom lip, Mia freezes slightly but doesn't pull away from me.

"I'm talking about you…not sure how I'll be able to race when I can't take my eyes off of you." I murmur and Mia looks away from me but I can feel the warmth from her flushing through my touch.

"My tail lights aren't that distracting." Mia's voice trembles, as she tries to recover from some meltage…extreme cheesiness.

I pull my hand back Mia looks at my retreating appendage like she wants to reach out grab it and return it to where it belongs.

"So…we should probably get to the racing part unless you want to admit defeat?" I insinuate with a smirking smile, and Mia playfully glares back at me.

"Oh no Buster, I'm kicking your butt and then making you take me out to dinner." Mia teases.

"Sweetheart…you wouldn't have to make me do anything when it comes to you." I joke and cringe internally but Mia, Mia seems to bask in my words practically glowing with happiness.

Mia and I line up. We count down with our fingers Mia smokes her tires before I even reach one.

Shooting me a smirk as she starts to rocket away, I hammer my throttle down as well we wave between one another neither one of us pulling too far ahead of the other unless we have to dodge the rare late night driver, we go on for miles of twisty hills, short straights, and long down hill glides.

This wasn't a race…no it never really was, that was just an excuse for us to spend some time together…but this has turned into a dance of two machines built for speed and two precision drivers.

Mia signals me to follow her and I let her take the lead as we crest the top of a hill and pull off onto a pull off that is actually a ridge, both our cars coming down to a soft idle as both of us get out of our cars.

The smile on Mia's face is matched by my own, we stand between our cars standing even closer to one another than before, the city lights glowing in the distance.

"You were holding back." Mia says with a smirk forming on her face, after a long pause of us staring into each other's eyes illuminated by the moon's light.

"Ehh…so were you…but it felt like we were…I don't know in sync."

Mia steps closer and rests her hand against my chest "So what was this, then? Our date?" Mia asks me a soft but unsure/insecure expression on her face.

I glance at our surroundings a soft self conscious smile tugging at the corners of my lips, "I guess that depends. Was it good enough for you to give me a second one?"

Mia looks at me, lips parting like she wants to say something…but then stands on her toes, leans in and presses her soft lips against mine.

Her kiss is soft, slow…curious… lingering, her hands come up her fingers lightly brushing the back of my neck, and sliding through the hair on the back of my head and upper neck.

When Mia pulls back, she rests her head against my chest, a little breathless, she whispers.

"You tell me, Brian. Was it?"

I smile, heart thudding hard enough that I know she has to feel it... feel what she does to me, "Yeah…this has been the best date I've ever had."

Mia laughs gently, interlocking her arms behind my neck while I rest my hands on her hips. We start another soft kissing spree that borders on make out session.
