Chapter 8 - A target

Chapter 8:

Zixuan turned to look at where Shengli pointed to. "A target." He smirked, spotting an omega drinking. Maybe this event wasn't that bad.

"What makes you smirk like that?" Shengli asked in confusion, wondering whether his friend was already going crazy.

Ignoring his friend's question, "Thanks," he said.

Zixuan weaved through the crowd. His steps were confident, easy—the usual walk of someone who was used to attention. But just as he reached the table, he slipped slightly on the polished floor. He caught himself with a light curse, casually recovering like nothing had happened.

Picking up a drink, he slipped. "What is a beauty like you doing alone?" he asked, winking at her.

"Drinking," the omega said nonchalantly, without even sparing him a glance. Her voice was calm, unaffected, as if she hadn't just been hit on by Fu Zixuan, the notorious heir of Fu Enterprises, whom omegas were lusting for.

That instantly piqued his interest.

His smile widened. He was always interested in beauties who were hard to conquer—the ones who didn't giggle or blush or cling. The challenge… that was the thrill.

"Why don't we clink our drinks?" Zixuan said awkwardly, not knowing how to start the conversation. It wasn't the smoothest of lines, but something about her threw him off his usual game.

She finally looked up at him, her eyes sharp and unreadable. Then, with a small nod, she raised her drink. "Yeah," she said simply, and their glasses met with a soft clink.

The sound echoed slightly in Zixuan's ears.

"I didn't bother introducing myself. My name is—"

"Fu Zixuan, the heir of Fu Enterprises, known infamously for being a playboy." The omega eyed him like he was stupid for thinking she didn't know him.

Zixuan blinked.

Well damn.

She looked at him like he was stupid for thinking she wouldn't know who he was.

"Wow, that's some information you've got there. Then what's your name, pretty lady?"

She whispered, "Wu Xiao."

Wu Xiao.

Zixuan repeated it in his head, liking the way it rolled off his tongue. "Your name is as pretty as you are."

Wu Xiao simply raised an eyebrow. "Is that the line that gets omegas on your bed?"

Zixuan choked on his drink and coughed into his fist. "You're quick."

"And you're predictable."

"Ouch," he said dramatically, placing a hand over his chest like he was wounded. "I'm being attacked, and I haven't even done anything yet."

"Yet?" she echoed, giving him a look.

Zixuan shrugged, sipping from his drink, enjoying the conversation. "I can't promise I'll behave. But I can promise you won't be bored."

She looked him up and down, unimpressed. "I'm not easily entertained."

He leaned in a little closer, lowering his voice. "Good. I don't like things that come easy."

For the first time, her lips curled into the faintest smirk. Just a flicker. But it was enough to make Zixuan feel victorious.

He sneered internally. All of them were the same. It's just one easy to crack than the other.

"So," he said, trying to keep the conversation going. "What brings someone like you to an event like this? Don't tell me you're here for the champagne."

Wu Xiao's gaze wandered across the hall. "Networking."

Zixuan was genuinely curious. "What type of networking?"

"I don't owe you specifics," she said, turning her attention back to him, her expression unreadable.

"No, you don't," he agreed, taking another sip. "But I'm a curious man. And you're interesting."

"Flattery doesn't work on me."

"Good. I'm not trying to flatter you. I'm just telling the truth."

She scoffed. "That's what all liars say."

Zixuan smiled wider, genuinely enjoying this now. It wasn't often someone kept up with him in conversation without already rolling on the bed with him.

"Well, what can I do to prove I'm telling the truth?" he asked.

She raised her drink, taking her time before answering. "You can start by not trying so hard."

Zixuan tilted his head, studying her. There was something different about Wu Xiao. She wasn't like other weak omegas.

Not just her beauty—though she was stunning in a way that wasn't loud or flashy—but the way she held herself. Confidence. Like she'd seen through a hundred men like him before.

Zixuan couldn't help but add, "I really admire your charisma." He wasn't teasing this time—he was truthful. But that didn't mean he wasn't going to try his best to get her on his bed.

He just needed to change his strategy. He wasn't a top enigma for nothing.

"Thank you. I also admire yours," Wu Xiao said, smiling.

Zixuan couldn't help but think otherwise, because he didn't remember having any charisma.

"Zixuan."

"What do you want?" Zixuan asked, a little annoyed at Shengli, who interrupted his conversation.

"What are you doing?" Shengli asked in confusion, wondering who Zixuan was talking to as he walked a little closer.

He was shocked.

"Sister? What are you doing here?" Shengli exclaimed, shocked to see his sister. "I thought you weren't coming to the party."

Wu Xiao smiled, seeing her brother. She had planned to surprise him later with her appearance. Who would have expected this moronic playboy to spoil her plan?

"I planned on surprising you."

Zixuan was shocked by the turn of conversation. "You know him?" he asked, pointing to Shengli.

Wu Xiao looked at Zixuan like he was baka for asking that question. "Didn't you hear him calling

"Wait—you guys know each other?" Shengli asked, still surprised. But seeing Zixuan's expression and remembering how he had left him quickly like a dog spotting prey, everything clicked.

Pointing at Zixuan, "Don't tell me you planned on flirting with my sister?"

Zixuan nervously looked everywhere but at Shengli's face. "No, why would I do that?"

"We're at an event. At least try to keep your dick calm," Shengli scolded.

Embarrassed, Zixuan quickly walked away. In his haste, he crashed into a waiter, and all the drinks on the tray came tumbling down on him.

Maybe that's what he got for being a player.
