EP.40 Infiltration – 2

Infiltrating the palace was surprisingly easy.

Even without thief-like skills, the power of the artifact meant no one suspected a thing.

Right now, I would appear identical to the palace guards.

On top of that, I had even lowered my presence, so the chances of being discovered were almost zero.

"But... what are those guys?"

There were some people strangely circling around me.

At first, I thought they were palace servants.

But when I hid myself and took a detour just in case, they suddenly turned and started following me.

Had I been discovered?

Their actions were odd.

It was as if they had planted a tracker on me and were following its signal.

"Did I step on some weird magic somewhere?"

I should have studied more about magic.

Maybe I touched or triggered something wrong after sneaking into the palace.

Given the situation, that seemed likely.

If you spot an intruder, the first thing to do is alert those nearby.

But since they were pursuing me so stealthily, it meant they had something to hide.

Someone with secrets in the palace.

It was safe to assume they were assassins working for the fake Sylvia.

Maybe this was actually a good thing.

Thanks to the artifact, I noticed them before they noticed me.

The advantage was overwhelmingly mine.

"Let's see how dumbly you follow me."

As I led them, they followed me without hesitation all the way to the garden, never suspecting I was waiting for them.

The palace garden was larger and more beautifully maintained than I expected.

As a symbol of the Lumis Kingdom's power, it was full of grass, trees, and flowers, making it easy to hide and perfect for an ambush.

I hid my body completely in the bushes and waited.

Thanks to the artifact weakening my presence, they never imagined I'd be hiding just behind the bushes.

They were staring intently at an orb emitting a faint light.

Were they using that to track my direction?

Luckily, it seemed they couldn't pinpoint the exact distance. If they could, they'd have realized I was right there.

The two exchanged glances, signaling to circle around the bush.

Just as they turned, I quickly drew my sword and stabbed one in the neck.

"Keugh..."

A short death rattle.

Caught off guard by the ambush, he died instantly and collapsed to the ground.

"Nice to meet you."

"...!"

The remaining one's face turned pale as if he'd seen a ghost.

He hurriedly reached for a weapon, but I had more than enough time to pierce his heart.

"Kh..."

My sword went straight through his chest, even as his hand was still inside his coat.

The bodies were quickly hidden in the bushes.

Assassins, it turns out, are weak when ambushed themselves.

They'd been tough when I fought them before, but with the roles reversed and my improved abilities, it was surprisingly easy.

"Now... I've done the deed, so what next?"

Both sides had already realized what was happening.

The assassination attempt had already failed.

If I kept using the artifact, escaping would be easy.

But unless the enemy was stupid, the next infiltration would be much harder.

There might never be another chance.

"Fortunately, they don't seem to want to cause a big commotion either."

I doubted there'd ever be a better opportunity to go after the fake Sylvia than now.

With that thought, my feet carried me back inside the palace.

No matter how big the palace was, it didn't take long to reach Sylvia's bedroom.

A lavish, extravagantly decorated door.

Once I opened it, I'd finally face the fake Sylvia.

Hopefully, it wasn't a trap or she hadn't fled. Well, whatever.

Creak-

What greeted me as I opened the princess's bedroom was unexpected.

The fake Sylvia, in a white dress.

And on the floor, a corpse that looked to belong to a noble.

"Why don't you come in?"

The fake Sylvia smiled confidently and seductively.

The sultry, wicked atmosphere she gave off would make anyone realize instantly she was a fake.

"You look confident. I like that."

There was no point staying in the hall, so I entered the bedroom and closed the door.

"You're Yujin, right?"

"And if I said I wasn't?"

"Hmm... well, then you'd probably end up like the man lying there."

Her seductive eyes locked onto me, sending chills down my spine.

Every sharpened sense told me she was no ordinary being.

"Let's say I am."

"Good. I was waiting for you. If it had been someone else, I'd have been a little disappointed. Fufu..."

The way she looked at me was like a cat toying with a mouse.

She exuded the confidence of someone who could kill at any time, as the corpse on the floor attested.

"Just curious, but is that your ally on the floor?"

"Of course not. You think I'd call such a lowly creature an ally? That's a joke."

Now I was a hundred percent sure.

Her aura and attitude-she was definitely not human.

"Humans are at best minions."

"As a fellow human, that's a bit hard to hear."

"Oh! But you're an exception. Even though you were a nuisance, I've never met such an unpredictable human as you."

"How flattering."

I retorted as I reached for my sword.

"Are you going to fight?"

Her tone was playful, but hearing it in person made my skin crawl.

A chill like poison crept over me.

"We're not about to shake hands and part ways, are we?"

"True, but if I wanted to fight, I'd have killed you as soon as you walked in."

The fake Sylvia playfully made a throat-slitting gesture with her hand.

So confident. Surely not...

"Are you... a dragon?"

A cold silence.

Then the fake Sylvia burst out laughing.

"Pfft... hahaha... That's a funny one. I like you."

Fortunately, her reaction suggested she wasn't a dragon.

That didn't dispel the ominous feeling, but it was some comfort.

"So, if you're not, that means I have a chance."

"If you think you can kill me by making me laugh, maybe you do?"

Shing-

I drew my sword and aimed it at the fake Sylvia.

As long as she wasn't a dragon, I could handle it.

At the very least, cutting off her head should kill her.

"Fighting is fine, but how about hearing my offer first?"

"Offer?"

"I just killed this guy and need someone to do his job."

Snap-!

She snapped her fingers, and a black mist appeared, clinging to the corpse.

In seconds, the body turned to bone, then crumbled to dust, vanishing as if it had never existed.

"So? I'll give you whatever you want. Women. Money. Power. Anything."

"No matter how you spin it, I'd probably end up just like that corpse."

Anyone who works with a being like this is doomed.

A creature who kills humans without a thought-no need to imagine what happens when you're no longer useful.

"Oh, that's a misunderstanding. I treat competent subordinates well. That guy was just too useless, so I disposed of him."

Apparently, this monster didn't realize her offer was anything but enticing.

There was no point listening further.

"Sorry, but that's not going to work for me."

I gripped my sword and charged at the fake Sylvia.

"I have no interest in serving a corpse."

Just as my blade was about to reach her neck, her ominous eyes met mine.

The next moment, a black mist far stronger than before burst from her body.

"Kh..."

A violent gust slammed me all the way to the door.

When the mist cleared and I opened my eyes, the fake Sylvia was gone.

No-standing there was a being in a different form.

Beautiful pink hair.

Seductive red eyes that seemed to draw you in.

Wearing only black underwear that contrasted with her white skin,

she flaunted her voluptuous body for all to see.

And... there were wings on her back, like a demon's.

"Ugh... really. Changing forms again is such a hassle."

"What are you?"

"I don't have to tell you, but I'll be nice since you're pitiful. I'm a succubus."

Succubus.

A dream demon that drains men's life force.

I never thought they actually existed.

There were no clear records of them even in this world, so I never suspected.

"For a creature that seduces men, you're surprisingly inconspicuous."

"These days, no succubus works so inefficiently. Just giving men erotic dreams at night is enough to drain their energy."

So she comes and goes without anyone knowing.

No wonder there are no records.

No one would record that a succubus came just because they had a dirty dream.

"Well then. How about I punish you a little?"

Black mist gathered in her hand, and suddenly she was holding a whip glowing with black light.

"A succubus can be killed by cutting off her head, right?"

"If you can, that is...♥"

Whoosh-!

She swung the whip.

Black mist coiled around it.

The moment my sword met the whip,

the sound was different from usual.

Changkang-!

"...Shit."

My sword couldn't withstand the whip and broke.
