Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Tuesday- A Home With Too Many Locks

Seraphine stirred slowly, the cotton sheets soft against her skin. For a moment, she felt like she was floating in a pool of honeyed light. The curtains were half drawn, letting in a drowsy sunset glow that painted the room in warm hues. Her head was warm, but not from the sun—it was Lucien's hand, calloused yet careful, stroking gently through her hair. His thumb occasionally brushed her temple, a soothing rhythm that matched her heartbeat.

He had moved the chaise lounge close to the side of her bed, one arm perched on the headboard, his head tilted with quiet devotion. She's awake, he thought, relief flooding through him. Thank God.

Lucien had never been a religious man, but moments like this? They bent his beliefs. His wife, his heartbeat, his whole damned world—and for a terrifying second, he thought he'd almost lost her. Again. The thought tightened in his chest like a vise.

Across the room, Amelia rocked Daniel gently in her arms, her lips whispering soft lullabies, her eyes flickering with both motherly instinct and worry. Daniel, the tiny miracle, cooed faintly before drifting off with one little fist curled near his face.

"Hey," Seraphine whispered, her voice dry but calm, a hint of vulnerability lacing her words.

Lucien leaned in immediately, eyes searching hers with a fierce intensity. "You're awake. You scared the shit out of me." His heart raced, and he found comfort in her gaze, feeling the weight of his fears lift just slightly.

She managed a soft smile, warmth blossoming in her chest. "What happened?"

He let out a breath, half-exhale, half-laugh. "A lot." He picked up the bottle of water by the bed and helped her take a sip, his fingers brushing against her lips. "I got a call—urgent - it was about the person who told the location. I had to step out just for a few minutes… I'm sorry. If I knew, you'd give birth at that moment—God, Sera, I never would've left you like that. But luckily, Amelia", he nodded in her direction "Was there as a nurse and she came to you," The guilt gnawed at him, but he couldn't help but feel grateful to see her awake.

She nodded slowly, her fingers sliding into his, grounding him. "It's okay. You came back." Her touch sent a warm shiver through him, reminding him of the bond they shared.

Lucien looked down at their hands, swallowing the lump in his throat. "I tracked who gave them our location. It was someone inside the PR team—probably paid off by your parents. Don't worry. They're gone now. Fired. Sued. I'm sealing every entrance of this house, every damn pixel of privacy." The thought of her parents' machinations fuelled his protective instincts.

He glanced at Daniel, a smile breaking through his tension. "I even got our little Prince Daniel two guard dogs. They'll grow with him. Trained, loyal, brutal to anything that comes too close." A grin played on his lips. "You should've seen them. Vicious little bastards. I named them Fang and Halo."

She chuckled lightly, the sound like music to his ears, then looked over at Daniel. "You named him… Daniel?"

Lucien's voice softened, nearly a whisper. "Yeah. After your grandfather, the one you said was kind. And also…" He brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, lingering a moment longer than necessary. "Because I want our son to grow up gentle before he's strong." The sincerity in his words wrapped around her like a warm embrace.

The room felt warmer, fuller—love stretched in every corner, binding them in an unspoken promise.

Just as Seraphine opened her mouth to say thank you, a sharp ring echoed through the house. Lucien's expression shifted; he stood up to attend to the sound. His heart sank, instinctively fearing the worst. "Just a minute."

Moments later, he returned, holding a strange black envelope. No sender information, no stamps—just their names and address written in blocky white, precise handwriting.

"What's that?" Seraphine asked, her brows drawing together, anxiety creeping in.

Lucien frowned, holding the letter up. "I don't know. Someone sent this, but its not written who." A chill ran down his spine.

She reached out, taking the envelope from him. As she opened it, her heart raced. The message inside, though just 16 words but was a stark and chilling:

You can't hide him from us forever. We know about the boy. We know your shadows.

Lucien's expression hardened as he read the words over her shoulder. "This wasn't a warning. It was a test." The weight of the threat settled heavily between them, dark clouds rolling in over their moment of peace.

Amelia froze mid-hum, her eyes wide with fear. "What the hell is that?" she murmured.

"I want every square inch of this mansion swept—security logs, hidden cams, fingerprints. I don't care how much it costs." He felt the world closing in, and the instinct to shield his family surged.

He turned back to Seraphine, calmer but with a wolfish edge. "They didn't just want to scare us. They wanted us to know they can reach us." The thought ignited a fire in him; he would not let them take away what was his.

Seraphine clutched the sheets, instinctively looking at the cradle where Daniel slept. Fear gripped her heart. What kind of danger are we in?

Amelia handed Daniel over to Seraphine, her eyes flicking toward the window with concern. "This place was supposed to be the safest in the city."

Lucien's jaw ticked, his mind racing. "And it still is. But now? It's also bait." The realization struck him hard; they had to act quickly.

"I will go call Reiner" Amelia announced as she ran out of the room.

The room felt heavy with unspoken fears, but amid the tension, a spark of determination ignited in Seraphine's chest. She drew strength from Lucien's unwavering gaze, a reminder that they were in this together.

"Do you think they will try to come for our baby?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. The thought of anyone threatening their son made her heart race.

Lucien's jaw tightened. "If they do, they'll find me waiting ready to slay them." His protective instincts surged, a primal urge to defend his family coursing through him.

"Lucien…" she began, but he interrupted, his tone fierce yet tender.

"No, Sera. You need to know that I will do whatever it takes to keep you both safe." His hand squeezed hers, a silent vow that resonated deep within her.

Amelia returned, her expression a mix of concern and resolve. "I just called Reiner. He'll be here in minutes with the team." Her voice was steady, but the worry in her eyes betrayed her.

"Thank you," Seraphine said, feeling gratitude wash over her. The only person from my past thats still with me in this chaos.

In this type of moments, the presence of loyal friends always feel like a life support.

Lucien's eyes flicked to the window, scanning the shadows outside. "We need to fortify everything. I'll start with the security system." His mind raced with plans, strategies forming as he considered every angle.

As Lucien moved toward the door, Seraphine's heart ached at the thought of him stepping into danger. "Wait," she called softly, her voice laced with urgency.

He turned, his brow furrowing. "What is it?"

"Please… don't rush into anything without thinking it through." The vulnerability in her voice cut through him, and he could see the fear flickering behind her brave façade.

Lucien stepped back, closing the distance between them. "I won't. I promise. But I can't stand by while we're threatened." His expression softened, and he cupped her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath his palm.

"Just… promise me you'll be careful." Her eyes glistened, a mixture of fear and love. She needed him to understand that his safety was just as important as theirs.

"Always," he replied, leaning in to plant a soft kiss on her forehead. The gesture was a balm against the storm brewing outside, a reminder of their unbreakable bond.

As he pulled away, Seraphine felt a swell of emotions—love, fear, and an overwhelming need to protect their little family. She glanced at Daniel, sleeping peacefully in his cradle, and her heart ached with fierce love.

"Lucien, what if we… what if we have to leave? What if they find us?" she asked, her voice trembling at the thought of uprooting their lives.

"They won't," he said, his voice firm. "But if it comes to that, I'll make sure we're ready. We'll have a plan." His confidence was infectious, planting seeds of hope even in her darkest thoughts. He paced around the room, cracking his knuckles, as he scrolled through his phone. Ah! Finally.  He found Asher's contact and immediately called him.

One second.

Two seconds

Three seconds

Four seconds

It was not until the sixth that Asher voice was heard from the other side of the call.

"Hello there Lucien, how's your angel?"

"No time Ash, I am sending her to your place."

"Huh? Sure but, is everything okay?"

"I will tell later"

"But what actually -"

"I SAID NO TIME!"

And with that he ended the call with a loud beep.

Amelia stepped closer, her hand resting on Seraphine's shoulder. "You're not alone in this. We'll fight together." Her solidarity felt like a protective shield, wrapping them all in a cocoon of support.

Seraphine nodded, feeling the weight of their friendship bolster her resolve. "Thank you, Amelia. That means everything." She leaned on her friend. The warmth of their connection eased the chill that had settled in her bones.

Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the house, startling them all. Lucien's head snapped toward the door, his protective instincts flaring. "That must be Reiner."

"Stay behind me," he instructed, moving toward the entrance with purpose. His heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline surging as he prepared to face whatever lay beyond.

As Lucien opened the door, Reiner stepped inside, flanked by two members of the security team. "Lucien, we need to move quickly. I want to check the perimeter and start surveillance."

"Good," Lucien replied, his tone clipped but grateful. "We received a threatening letter. I want to know how they got in." The urgency in his voice was palpable, fuelling the atmosphere with tension.

Reiner's expression turned serious. "Let's not waste time, then." He gestured to his team, and they immediately began their assessment of the house. As they moved through the rooms, Seraphine felt a wave of anxiety wash over her. The shadows seemed to loom larger, the air thick with impending danger.

Lucien returned to her side, his presence a steady anchor in the chaos. "We're going to be fine, my angel. I promise." He could feel her tension, and the urge to comfort her surged within him.

"Just stay close," she whispered, leaning into him. The warmth of his body calmed her racing heart, reminding her of the love that fortified their bond.

Lucien wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "Always." In that embrace, they found a moment of solace amid the storm, a reminder that together, they could face anything.

As Amelia joined them, the three of them stood united, ready to confront whatever darkness awaited them. Their love was a shield to protect not only all of them but their moon-kissed child, their resolve a weapon, and with each passing moment, they prepared to fight for their family—and for the light they refused to let fade.

And in less than five minutes, a sleek black Bugatti was carrying a mother and child off to safety.

Lucien glanced back at her, his eyes filled with determination. "We'll find a way to make this right," he reassured, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. Seraphine could see the fire in his gaze—a promise that they would not be defeated.

It reversed and then started making its way down the winding road, its engine purring like a predator. Inside, Seraphine held Daniel close, her heart racing. Every mile brought them closer to safety, but the weight of uncertainty loomed large. They were leaving behind not just a home, but the shadows that threatened to consume them. Each passing tree blurred into a darkened silhouette, mirroring the fears that danced in her mind.
