Chapter 27 - The Business of War

The air in the fortified Monaco bunker was cold, still, and heavy with the scent of old paper and new money. Lex sat at the head of a long mahogany table, the final documents for the new venture spread out before him. Across from him, a group of powerful, hardened men, all with their own ties to the underworld, watched him with a mixture of respect and fear. They were all there for the same reason: to make a deal that would cut into Damian Zhenya's global power and influence.

Lex picked up a pen, his eyes scanning the documents one last time. He knew this was more than a business deal. It was a message. He looked at Ben, who was sitting next to him, his face a mask of professional calm.

"They're a powerful family," Ben said, his voice a low murmur. "I did some research before we left. They have their hands in everything. Why the personal feud, Lex? This is more than a territorial dispute."

Lex put down the pen, leaning back in his chair. He looked at the men around the table, then at Ben. He was about to give them a look into his private world.

"Damian Zhenya is a man who believes he controls everything," Lex began, his voice flat and cold. "He's a kingpin of the East, a phantom force that operates in the shadows. He controls ports, shipping lines, and distribution networks. He has his hands in every industry, including the ones we're trying to build. My presence in Oakhaven and my expansion into legitimate businesses are a threat to his empire. He sees me as an outsider, a new-money upstart trying to encroach on his territory. This deal we just made… it will cut into his business, and it will send a message. It's a declaration of war. He's trying to hit me where it hurts, and I will show him what happens when you cross me."

A murmur went through the room. The men understood. They weren't just making a deal; they were picking a side in a war, a war between two powerful forces, and they had chosen Lex. Lex picked up the pen again, his eyes meeting each man's gaze.

"The deal is done," he said, and with a swift, clean motion, he signed the documents.

Meanwhile, on the movie set in Oakhaven, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Isabella was still seething in her dressing room. She was a woman of immense pride and power, and Mark's public rebuke had been a severe blow to her ego. She was a top-tier actress, a famous name, and yet Mark had made her feel small. She wanted revenge. She wanted Zara off the project.

Just as she was about to make a call to her father, the door to her dressing room opened without a knock. Mark stood in the doorway, his face a mask of cold professionalism. He was a man with a powerful reputation in the industry, and his calm demeanor was more frightening than any scream.

"Isabella, we need to talk," he said, his voice flat.

"I have nothing to say to you, Mark," she huffed, turning away from him.

"You're not going to ruin that girl's career," he said, his voice hardening slightly. "I know your family has power. I know you're not just an actress. But this is my set. This is my film. And I will not have you bullying a talented newcomer. Do you understand me?"

Isabella's back was stiff. She knew he wasn't just talking. He was one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, a man who could blackball anyone from any project. She was scared of him, of his silent power, of his cold anger. But a part of her was also thrilled by it. He was a challenge. He was a man who didn't bend to her will, and that was a rare thing.

"You're making a mistake, Mark," she said, her voice a low hiss. "You'll regret this."

He simply looked at her, a look of disappointment in his eyes. Then he turned and walked away.

In her own dressing room, Zara was still trembling from the day's drama. Her new assistant, Emily, had just left, and Zara was alone with her thoughts. The reality of the situation was setting in. She wasn't just dealing with a mean girl; she was dealing with a powerful family, a family that was tied to her best friend's enemy. She had to call Anya. She couldn't deal with this alone.

The phone rang and Anya's voice came through. "Zara? What's wrong?"

"Anya, I need to talk to you," Zara said, her voice shaking. "It's about Isabella. She's… she's a Zhenya. Emily told me. She has a powerful family, and she's not afraid to use them. I'm so scared. What if she tries to ruin me?"

Anya's heart pounded in her chest. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions. She felt a surge of anger at her cousin, and a wave of fear for her friend.

"Zara, calm down. Where are you? Are you safe?"

"I'm on the set," Zara replied, her voice filled with a new kind of terror. "I'm safe for now, but I don't know what to do. I don't want to lose this job. This is my dream."

"I understand," Anya said, her voice filled with a cold rage. "I want you to stay away from her. Don't engage with her. Don't even look at her. I'm going to talk to Lex about this as soon as he gets back."

"Lex is not here?" Zara asked, her voice a new wave of fear washing over her.

"He's on a business trip," Anya replied, trying to keep her voice steady. "He'll be back soon. Just stay calm, and stay out of Isabella's way. I'll call you as soon as I can. Be careful."

Anya hung up the phone, her hand trembling. The world felt like it was closing in on her. She was at the Volkov estate, a fortress of power, but she felt more vulnerable than ever.

A few hours later, as Anya was trying to calm herself down, the doorbell of the mansion rang. She wasn't expecting anyone. The staff was on a break, and she was alone in the quiet grandeur of the house. She opened the door to find Eva standing there, a bottle of expensive wine in her hand.

"Anya, darling! I was just passing by and I thought I would drop in," Eva said, her voice a honeyed sweetness that sent a chill down Anya's spine. "I heard Lex was out of town, and I just wanted to make sure you were doing okay."

Anya's guard went up immediately. "I'm fine, Eva. Thank you for the thought. But I'm a little busy right now."

Eva pushed past her, stepping into the grand foyer. "Nonsense. A beautiful girl like you should not be alone in a house this big. It's so lonely without Lex here, isn't it? We spent so much time here together. We were inseparable, you know. He trusted me with everything. His business, his family… his secrets."

Anya felt a pang of jealousy. "I'm sure you were very close. But Lex and I have a different kind of relationship."

Eva laughed, a light, mocking sound. "Do you, darling? He's a very complex man, with a lot of secrets. He likes to compartmentalize his life. He puts certain people in certain boxes. He never told you about me, did he? That's because he likes to keep his past and his present separate. He doesn't like to talk about the dark things he's done."

Anya felt a knot of fear tighten in her stomach. "I know he has a lot of secrets. But I trust him."

"Trust is a fragile thing, darling," Eva said, her eyes narrowing. "Especially with a man like Lex. He's a powerful man, but he's also a very dangerous one. He's made a lot of enemies. And they will come for him. And when they do… they will use anyone he loves to get to him. You need to be very careful, Anya. You're a beautiful girl, but you're not in his world. You don't belong here."

Eva put the wine bottle on the table, her smile a cruel mask. "I'll see myself out. Take care, Anya. And remember my words. He's a man of secrets. And he will always protect his secrets before he protects anyone else."
