Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The White Chest

Kai's constant opposition to Qi Feng was really starting to rub some people the wrong way.

Wang Ziheng was the first to snap."There are like thirty of us here, and every single one has at least a C-rank gift! You, an F-rank piece of trash, think you've earned the right to talk back?!"

Others jumped in."Exactly! President Qi is being generous by even considering you. Instead of groveling in gratitude, you're out here acting like a damn clown!"

Qi Feng didn't say anything himself—his gentleman act didn't allow for public outbursts.

But lackeys like Wang Ziheng? They were the perfect mouthpiece. He could say what Qi Feng wanted to say, without getting Qi Feng's hands dirty.

Qi Feng was loving it.Still, on the surface, he played the peacemaker."Everyone, chill. It's not worth getting worked up over a little disagreement…"

Kai just smiled."Yeah, I'm F-rank, no denying that. But my boss? He's A-rank. Not just A-rank, mind you—he's the first person in the world to get a global system announcement. If I have no right to object, then are you saying he doesn't either?"

That hit hard.

Yuan Feng was in the same team as Kai. Naturally, he had Kai's back.

And truth be told, he owed Kai—he wouldn't have gotten that global announcement if Kai hadn't discovered the crystal cores in the first place.

Now Kai was insisting on going to Dorm 3…

Even if it looked like he was just trying to piss off Qi Feng, Yuan Feng backed him without hesitation."I'm going to Dorm 3."

That was all he said.

No explanation. No argument.Just a calm, flat statement. That's what real strength looked like.

Qi Feng was fuming inside.

His Intuition had warned him: Dorm 3 held an opportunity. Dorm 4, danger.

That's why he'd arranged to take Dorm 3 himself, and shoved Kai off to Dorm 4.

Now?

Sure, he was the most respected guy here—but even he had to admit that Yuan Feng was the strongest.

Qi Feng's talent might've been top-tier, but it offered zero combat ability.

After some mental gymnastics, he swallowed his pride and stepped back.

Trying to recover his lost dignity, he pulled a little show-and-tell.

With a wave of his hand, a pile of blades and tools suddenly appeared out of nowhere on the ground.

Gasps filled the air.

"Storage gear?!"

"President Qi has a dimensional inventory?!"

"What the hell?! How'd you get that so fast?!"

Qi Feng gave a modest smile, pretending like it was no big deal."Found a white chest by the roadside. It had a dimensional ring inside. Just lucky, I guess."

"White chest? What's that?!"

Qi Feng, ever the teacher, explained:"It's a loot box that spawns randomly. Keep an eye out when clearing monsters—you might run into one."

Kai nearly laughed out loud.

"Random"? Please.

That was all thanks to Qi Feng's Intuition.

Kai remembered from his past life—on the first day of the apocalypse, a bunch of white chests did spawn. They were easy to grab, too.

But their value wasn't particularly high.

Dimensional rings were common as hell in the later stages of the game. Nothing to brag about.

What really mattered were the higher-tier chests. Those were guarded by elite dimensional monsters.

And as for other ways to get treasure...

Kai shot a glance at Yuan Feng.

Yuan Feng, oblivious to the look, was busy drooling over Qi Feng's gear. He casually grabbed an iron axe from the pile.

Kai picked out a box cutter with a razor-sharp blade.

Totally useless for killing monsters…But for slitting throats? Perfect.

He pocketed the blade discreetly and grabbed a meat cleaver to keep up appearances.

Once everyone was armed, the teams headed into their respective dorm buildings.

Qi Feng was the last to move.

He watched Kai disappear into Dorm 3, and his eyes darkened with killing intent.

But when his gaze swept past Luan Yuling, a flicker of hesitation surfaced.

Each dorm was six stories tall.

Yuan Feng's team began their sweep from the first floor.

Since the Slaughter Game had begun at 3 p.m., many students were still in class.A lot of the rooms were empty.

The rest had their doors tightly shut, trying to block out any attacking dimensional bugs.

The first floor was manageable. Just a few bugs lurking near doors.

But the second floor?

Infested.

The hallways were crawling.

Still, for Yuan Feng's squad, it was nothing they couldn't handle.

He let loose a Dragonfire Burst, roasting dozens of bugs in one shot.

Even Luan Yuling, with her now-refined Wind Blade skill, was slicing through them like hot butter.

Xu Gongqing, a speed talent user, was in his element—his new weapon from Qi Feng gave him even more confidence, and he went full berserker.

Han Xueying, with her B-rank Holy Light gift, provided healing and stamina support, keeping the team in peak form.

As for Kai?

He didn't fight.He burned corpses.

By the time he was done cremating everything on the first and second floors, all four of his base attributes had doubled—each surpassing 2 points.

That meant he was now stronger than Yuan Feng, who had received the all-stats +1 reward from the global announcement.

Yuan Feng, meanwhile, had received three crystal cores from Kai's burnings.

Each person could only absorb 10 cores per day, so Yuan Feng gave all three to Luan Yuling.

Clearly, he had a thing for her.

He was laying it on thick.

But Luan Yuling had seen him get wrecked by Lei Ming. Her fangirl admiration had cooled.

His clumsy flirting just wasn't doing it anymore.

With the second floor cleared and the sky beginning to darken, unease started to settle in.

Everyone was aware: they could absorb a max of 10 cores per day.

Wasting day one? That was a huge loss.

And there were only 6 hours left before day one ended.

At this pace, only Yuan Feng and Luan Yuling were going to hit level 1 today.

Han Xueying and Xu Gongqing were clearly anxious, a bit frustrated.

They felt Yuan Feng was playing favorites.

Yuan Feng noticed. He pushed the pace.

"We need to pick it up," he said. "And also… we'll check each dorm room, just in case some students were attacked. And if we're lucky… maybe find one of those white chests Qi Feng mentioned."

He didn't spell it out.

But everyone got the hint.

They weren't just looking for loot.

They were hunting for bodies.

Human corpses held crystal cores too—and burning them would be faster than bug farming.

The mood lightened.

They moved up to the third floor.

Oddly enough, there were barely any bugs.

Only a few crawlers creeping along the hallway.

Yuan Feng was pissed.

He knocked on several doors and finally got an answer:

"Some guy with an A-rank gift already cleared this floor."

That guy had even formed a team and moved on to the fourth floor.

Now Yuan Feng was fuming.

He rushed through the remaining third-floor cleanup and charged up to the fourth.

Same deal. The place had already been swept.

There were barely any bugs left.

Now he was visibly pissed off.

"Let's split up," he ordered. "The bugs left here are scattered. We'll cover more ground that way."

No one objected.

Bugs were weak and slow. No big deal.

Yuan Feng turned to Kai."You stick with me."

Not out of concern.

He just didn't trust Kai.

Kai's ability could burn corpses clean—no trace left behind.

Other people left obvious signs when they harvested crystal cores.

Yuan Feng clearly suspected Kai might pocket a few for himself.

Kai didn't argue. He wanted to team up anyway.

So, the five-person team—three guys, two girls—split up in four directions.

Kai stuck close to Yuan Feng and said,"Let's go that way. My dorm's over there."

"Alright."

Yuan Feng had no objections.
