Aveline didn't speak for a little while. She just sobbed her heart out.
The sun began to sink slower, and a cool breeze welcomed the evening.
Officer Ben looked up at the sky, and then at Aveline.
And as if she could feel him looking at her, she lifted her head.
"I didn't find the avalanche series," she said through a very soft, barely audible voice. "But it didn't matter. My dad died before I returned to the hospital. His bed was next to my mothers. She went into cardiac arrest immediately."
Aveline felt her heart squeezing, as its walls closed in on her, but she didn't stop.
She pushed through the pain.
"I held my mum's hands as she was being rushed into the theater room. Her last words to me was that I needed to eat. She was dying, but she was worried about me eating," she laughed bitterly. "Anyway, she didn't make it. That's my story." She blinked, coming out of the trance of pain reliving that story had thrust her into.
