Chapter 23: The Glitch's Gambit
The D.E.O. was still reeling from the "platypus forklift" and the "impossible fog." Alex Danvers was a coiled spring of frustrated brilliance, her theories growing increasingly outlandish. Kara, however, was subtly changing. The personalized "clue" had resonated deeply. Her curiosity about "the Glitch" was no longer just professional; it was a deeply personal quest, tinged with a budding, unspoken trust. I could feel her wonder through the empathic link, a warm, hopeful thrum that countered my own inherent cynicism.
A new threat emerged, more dangerous than Jemm or the market aliens. A metahuman, canon-accurate for this point in the timeline, with the ability to absorb kinetic energy and redirect it, making physical attacks against them almost useless. This was no job for subtle nudges or mental tricks. This required a direct, undeniable display of my power. A gambit.
"Alright, System," I thought, watching the news reports of the metahuman laying waste to a city block. "Time to put the fear of multi-dimensional pranks into this guy. And by 'fear,' I mean 'utter existential confusion leading to inevitable defeat.' And by 'pranks,' I mean 'reality-bending tactical superiority.'" The thrill of the gamble was exhilarating, but the underlying tension was immense. This was a calculated risk. A show of force.
[THREAT LEVEL: HIGH. RECOMMENDED: DIRECT REALITY WARPING INTERVENTION (OVERT).]
Kara arrived on the scene, engaging the metahuman. The fight was brutal. Every punch Supergirl landed was absorbed, making the metahuman stronger, faster. Kara was visibly struggling, her frustration and mounting desperation a sharp, bitter taste through our empathic link.
"Not good enough, Adam. Time to go big or go home," I muttered, my hands clenching. This wasn't about subtle suggestions anymore. This was about turning the battlefield into my personal playground, twisting reality just enough to make the impossible happen.
[SKILL: REALITY WARPING (LVL 1). APPLICATION: PERCEPTUAL DISTORTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL RECONFIGURATION. FOCUS: DISORIENTATION AND WEAPON NEGATION.]
I started with the metahuman's perception. Mid-swing, as he prepared to unleash a devastating counter-attack, the very ground beneath him seemed to ripple like water. His vision blurred, not as an illusion, but as if the light particles themselves were momentarily going rogue. The air around him shimmered, distorting sounds, making his own movements feel disconnected from his body. He stumbled, roaring in confusion, momentarily off-balance.
"What's happening?!" he yelled, his voice echoing strangely.
Kara, momentarily confused, paused. Through our empathic link, I felt her sudden bewilderment, then a surge of something akin to awe, as she realized this wasn't just a coincidence. This was him.
Then, the environmental reconfiguration. The surrounding debris, the very air itself, seemed to conspire against the metahuman. A broken lamppost, previously inert, suddenly elongated and twisted, forming a temporary, impossible barrier that forced him to change direction, exposing his flank. A pile of rubble, previously stable, suddenly became fluid, sucking at his feet, briefly trapping him. Not moving the debris, but warping its properties for a few seconds.
The metahuman screamed, swinging wildly at the air, his powers useless against a reality that refused to obey its own rules. He was fighting the impossible, the truly absurd.
Kara, witnessing this undeniable, overt intervention, seized the moment. Her punches, previously absorbed, now felt different. I subtly warped the impact of her blows on the metahuman, causing his kinetic absorption to glitch, to fail for micro-seconds, creating agonizing jolts of feedback. He roared, clutching his head, his powers flickering.
With a final, desperate surge, Kara unleashed a devastating blow, hitting him squarely. The metahuman crumpled, unconscious, his powers overloaded by the sheer illogical assault.
The scene on the news was chaos. Emergency responders, the D.E.O., and civilians were all staring at the unconscious metahuman, then at the subtly warped landscape around him. The lamppost, already reverting, still had a disturbing, rubbery quality. The ground still seemed to ripple faintly.
Alex Danvers arrived, her face grim. She knelt beside the unconscious metahuman, examining him. "His energy signature is completely unstable," she muttered to an agent. "And the environmental distortions… they're not illusions. They're residual reality warping. This 'Glitch'… it's not just powerful. It's sentient. It's actively intervening. It's intelligent." Her voice was tight, a cold dread replacing her usual frustration. The fear for Kara, for a world where reality itself was a plaything, was palpable.
"Yes, Agent Danvers," I thought, my body wracked with tremors from the immense power drain, a metallic tang of exhaustion in my mouth. "Intelligent. And quite good at my job, if I do say so myself. Now if you'll excuse me, I believe I need a very large nap. Or perhaps a small universe to re-create for recreational purposes." The gambit had worked. Kara's confidence soared, and the D.E.O. finally understood. The Glitch was no longer just an anomaly. It was a force.
