Chapter 13 - LESSONS IN MODERN WARFARE (and DATING)

The revelation of Valerius's presence, cloaked in Hiroshi's unassuming form, had sharpened Ren's senses to a terrifying degree. Every casual glance, every whispered conversation in the school halls, now held a potential double meaning. The mundane rhythm of classes, once merely baffling, now felt like a carefully constructed illusion, a fragile veneer over a simmering, ancient conflict.

His alliance with Li Wei, forged in the crucible of battle, quickly became the cornerstone of his new strategy. They met discreetly, often in the quiet corners of the library or the student council office during lunch breaks, their hushed conversations a stark contrast to the boisterous chatter of their peers.

"The Awakened are stronger than common thugs," Li Wei explained one afternoon, her voice a low murmur as she scrolled through a "tablet" device. "Their physical forms are merely vessels. To truly incapacitate them, one must disrupt the arcane energy binding them to Valerius's will."

Ren listened intently, his mind absorbing this new form of combat. "And how does one 'disrupt arcane energy' in this world?" he asked, a hint of frustration in his tone. His sword, his spells – they were useless here.

Li Wei paused, her brow furrowed in thought. "I am still recalling the full extent of my abilities in this form. The energy is... different. Subtler. But I felt it during the ambush. A concussive force, a wave of pure will. It seems my essence, even in this body, retains some power." She looked at him. "Your presence, Kaelen, also seems to amplify it."

Their discussions were often interrupted by Itami, who, despite their attempts at secrecy, seemed to have an uncanny knack for finding them. He would burst in, eyes wide with theories gleaned from online forums about "shadow organizations" and "dimensional rifts."

"So, you guys think there are, like, other ancient warriors hiding in plain sight?" Itami whispered excitedly during one such interruption, completely misinterpreting their grave conversation. "Like, maybe the quiet kid in art class is secretly a ninja master, or Mrs. Albright is actually a dragon?"

Li Wei would offer a polite, strained smile. "Something like that, Itami."

Ren, however, found himself growing accustomed to Itami's presence, even finding a strange comfort in his naive enthusiasm. Itami, oblivious to the true stakes, grounded them in the mundane, reminding them of the world they were trying to protect. He was also surprisingly resourceful, his modern knowledge proving invaluable.

"If you want to find people, you need to use social media!" Itami declared one day, tapping furiously on his phone. "Everyone's on it! We can look for people who are, like, really into ancient history, or maybe have weird hobbies, or just seem... different."

Ren and Li Wei exchanged a look. It was a bizarre concept, but the logic was sound. They tasked Itami with creating a "profile" for Ren, a digital persona that felt utterly alien to the emperor. He watched, bewildered, as Itami uploaded a picture of him, chose a "username," and began to "follow" other students.

"Now, we just need to keep an eye out for anyone who seems... off," Itami explained, scrolling through endless feeds of brightly colored images and short, nonsensical phrases.

The "lover" misunderstanding, however, continued to plague them. Itami, convinced of a burgeoning romance, would constantly tease them. Classmates would whisper and giggle as Ren and Li Wei spoke in hushed tones, their serious discussions about Valerius's movements and potential allies interpreted as stolen moments of affection.

One afternoon, in the cafeteria, a group of girls approached their table, giggling. "So, Ren," one of them chirped, "are you and Li Wei, like, official now? You guys are always together!"

Ren, mid-bite of a particularly bland "chicken nugget," froze. He looked at Li Wei, then back at the girls, his mind struggling to process the social code. "Official?" he repeated, utterly lost.

Li Wei, ever composed, offered a tight smile. "We are merely collaborating on a very important academic project."

"Right, an 'academic project'!" Itami interjected, winking at the girls. "They're practically inseparable! It's super cute!"

Ren felt a flush rise to his cheeks, a sensation he hadn't experienced since his days as a young, inexperienced prince. The sheer absurdity of the situation was overwhelming. He, Emperor Kaelen, reduced to navigating teenage gossip.

Later, as they walked home, Ren turned to Li Wei. "This 'social strategy' is proving to be more taxing than any siege. How do we disarm this... misunderstanding?"

Li Wei sighed, a rare display of exasperation. "It is a peculiar aspect of this world's culture, Kaelen. Perhaps we simply embrace it. It might even serve as a form of misdirection.

Who would suspect a pair of 'lovers' of plotting against an ancient evil?"

Ren considered this. It was a bizarre notion, but perhaps... a viable tactic. He, the Sun Emperor, pretending to be entangled in a "romantic relationship" to hide his true purpose. The irony was not lost on him.

As they approached his house, Ren saw Hiroshi walking a few blocks ahead, his posture relaxed, his head down, seemingly engrossed in his phone. But Ren knew. He felt the cold, subtle presence of Valerius, a faint ripple in the air that only he and Li Wei could perceive. The predator was always near, always watching.

The school, with its mundane lessons and baffling social rituals, was no longer just a place of confusion. It was a training ground, a strategic hub, and a battleground. Ren was learning to wield new weapons – not swords or spells, but information, discretion, and the unexpected loyalty of a bewildered friend. The war had truly begun, and Kaelen, the Emperor, was slowly, painfully, adapting to his new life as a student, a lover (in the eyes of his peers), and a soldier in the shadows.
