I stared at him in disbelief. "Pop Pop, my mother's instructions feel like punishment. 'Celeste, you're too fat. Celeste, don't eat that. Celeste, you should take better care of your skin. Celeste, why can't you be more like other daughters?'" I mimicked her tone perfectly. "I tried, Grandpa. I really tried to understand her, but Mom is impossible. She sees me as a failure while Kai is her perfect child."
"And how does that make you feel?" Pop Pop asked, and I could hear Dr. Martha’s influence in the question.
"Like I'm never going to be enough," I admitted, "Like no matter what I do, how much I change, how hard I try, she'll always find something wrong with me."
"And you think getting married to Alpha Percy's son would fix that?"
