Chapter 21 - Surveillance

As much as Luan enjoyed gathering intel on lowlife hoodlums, looking into people his useless brother was hanging around with dubious intentions wasn't exactly his favorite pastime.

He had better things to be doing, but Arlan was acting shady as hell, and Luan did not like being kept in the dark about things that would no doubt come back to bite him in the ass. As they kind of had the night before, though Dante was mostly to blame for that.

From the little he'd gleaned of public records, Arlan was recently seen with a man called Rat, otherwise known as Eric Throm. He had a record of everything from petty theft to high scale burglaries, his hand always dipping into trouble.

His friends weren't much better, each having been caught at least once for something at least edging on illegal. Looking a little deeper, sights usually reserved for the crooked and dishonest revealed the man to be involved in some dangerous deals right now. Things like pheromone suppressants and heat inducers strong enough to send a rhinoceros into a new gender.

Whatever Arlan was after, it couldn't be good if he felt the need to surround himself with a bunch of shady characters trading in such treacherous waters.

For now, Luan was satisfied with his search, figuring whatever else he might find could be wrought from the lips of the man himself. Arlan had better have enjoyed the reprieve he got from questions because Luan just drummed up a dozen more in his little delve into the group.

The fact that most of their recent moves was surrounding duplicitous drugs, Luan felt the need to make himself get involved, if only to know why Arlan was hanging around them.

He shut the computer down, pushing his chair away as he stretched his taut muscles, popping the joints and pulling forth a soft groan of satisfaction. The downside to this job was when he had to spend long hours in this chair, pouring over wordy documents, or trying to pick out faces he'd seen once in blurry photos as he searched around.

He flipped the lightswitch, checking through the small security camera he kept outside the door to make sure no one would see him exit that shouldn't, before going back out into the front of his business. He made sure to sell actual insurance, gleaning a bit of profit on the side and keeping appearances perfectly legitimate, in case anyone was poking deep enough to catch him in any lies.

It had saved his ass on at least two occasions, some of his customers' victims managing to catch his trail in the search for vengeance. If they got past the first defense, as he liked to call it, there were always physical means to make sure they learned their lesson more permanently.

He nodded towards Samara, the receptionist who made sure to inform him of any unwanted attention walking through the door.

She smiled, giving a small nod back, dark eyes crinkling a bit as she went about her work with practiced precision. Golden brown curls draped over her shoulder when she leaned her head back towards the papers she'd been scrawling across a moment prior.

She had been a great find, someone perfectly suited for putting customers at ease while also watching every minute detail one might give off while conversing with the lowly concierge.

Goodness knows Luan had been caught off guard by her natural charm, giving off a soothing vibe while simultaneously cataloging one's every weakness.

Samara had been more than happy for the job offer, what with her huge family that had far less support than they needed, and her being the oldest of eight kids.

He sauntered out the front door, finding the street as people infested as when he left it, the sun having risen further into the sky on its quest to light the world for the day.

He scowled a bit at the lack of clouds, pulling out his pair of sunglasses he kept in his pocket any time he had an outing to take that might leave his eyes at the sun's blinding mercy.

He dragged his car across town, finding the small school encircled closely by a chain link fence meant to protect the city's elite offspring in the hopes of preserving their tiny lives.

Parking down the street, Luan sat back with a bit of leisure, bunkering down for the wait it would take until school let out for the day.

Luckily, he had been busy for a while in his pursuit of answers, so he didn't have to wait long.

He spotted her almost immediately, dark hair swinging in the breeze, big golden eyes filled with small smiles as she skipped along next to others of the same small stature.

Mira Jin.

This was actually the place Luan had used to get a hold of her before, no one expecting him to have discovered where she might attend school in this vast city filled with endless possibilities. Dante really should have been more prepared, but from what he'd seen, the man seemed almost too at ease with the notion of keeping her well guarded.

Leaving the perfect opportunity for people like Luan to take advantage.

Really, poor parenting to the extreme, especially considering the man had the means to ensure her safety near perfectly.

Today, he only planned on a little surveillance, hoping to never get close enough to make it on Dante's radar again.

If Mira seemed unhappy, Luan could help someone get to her, arranging something more secure in life for the little girl, but had made a hard unequivocal decision to stay at a distance from now on.

Dante seemed far too interested, and Luan didn't like the way he almost allowed it every time the man came closer.

Maybe he did like Mira, if just a bit, despite her deranged ideas and tendency to spout it to the world. But he wasn't prepared to let her get any closer either. She was almost as bad as her father, planning his future in her life as though it was a surefire outcome and leaving little room to be taught otherwise.

A black, long bodied car pulled up, a few guards disembarking as they ushered her tiny goodbyes along.

She waved heartily, smile never leaving as her tiny friends all dispersed towards their own families and cars. He noticed a young boy lingered longer than the others, making sure to get a drawn-out hug before he, too, was forced to leave.

It seemed romance tried to exist at all ages, after all.

Her small body was assisted inside the vehicle, and it pulled out onto the street a moment later.

Luan started to follow at a distance, keeping a few cars between them as he watched closely. He wanted to see what kind of schedule she might have in her daily life. Perhaps it would reveal enough for him to make a complete decision in regards to her future.

Mostly, all he found was that she really was treated like a spoiled little princess. They stopped for ice cream, went shopping for dresses, and pet puppies at the park. Honestly, it mostly just seemed like they were trying to keep her tiny mind entertained until it was bedtime.

Not once, however, did Luan see Dante appear.

So, really, the main issue was his lack of existence in his daughter's life. She was basically being raised by his men, even if it was overindulgent to her tiny, earthly desires.

Luan would have to check up on her often, at least for a while, but it seemed like no drastic measure would need to be implemented.

Yet.
