Chapter 35 - The Unsanctioned Intervention & A Cruel Trap

The alarms blared, reports screamed through our pureblood network, each update a fresh stab of dread. Krista was in the thick of it, diving headfirst into the Church's darkest secrets. I saw it all in my mind's eye: the fire, the frantic data wipe, the deep, desperate infiltration. My chains had snapped. I was going to them.

"We move now!" I barked, grabbing my cloak. Christian, Ethan, Marcus, and Jeremy were already on their feet, their faces etched with grim resolve. We burst from Christian's private quarters, our footsteps thundering through the quiet corridors of the pureblood residence.

But we didn't make it to the main entrance. Just as we reached the vast, ornate foyer, a wall of pureblood guards, stern-faced and unyielding, materialized before us. At their head stood a high-ranking pureblood who served directly under my father, his gaze a cold, familiar judgment.

"Prince Kai," his voice was like ice. "By order of Lord Alaric, you and your companions are to return to your quarters immediately. Any attempt to interfere with human affairs will be met with severe consequence."

"Interfere?" My voice was a raw growl. "They're being framed, murdered! The Church is spiraling out of control!"

"Human concerns are not our concern, Prince," the pureblood stated, his eyes unblinking. "Lord Alaric's command is absolute. You are to attend the gathering at the estate. Now."

Before I could argue further, guards flanked us, not violently, but with an undeniable force. We were steered, not led, out of the residence and into waiting vehicles. The impotent rage seared through me. I was being held captive by my own people, forced into inaction while the woman I loved faced unimaginable peril.

As our car sped through Makati City, away from the chaos and toward the sprawling pureblood estate, the network continued to hum with dire news. The fire at the Church was being contained, the data breach slowed. But then came the reports that sent a fresh wave of ice through my veins:

"Orphanage — Multiple Explosions Confirmed!"

"Massive structural damage to the orphanage complex!"

"Perpetrators identified: Krista, Philip, and Anita. They have escaped the premises. High-priority manhunt initiated. They are on the run."

My world tilted. Explosions. They hadn't just exposed; they had destroyed. And they were running, hunted by the full might of the human Church. My knuckles were white where I gripped the car door. They were out there, wounded, vulnerable, and I was being dragged to… what was this damned party anyway?

The car pulled up to the grand entrance of the pureblood estate. Lights blazed from every window, music swelled from within, a cacophony of celebration that grated against my raw nerves. I was shoved out, my blood boiling, only to be met by Lord Alaric standing at the top of the marble steps. Beside him, a stunning female vampire, elegant and regal, smiled demurely.

Lord Alaric's gaze swept over me, cold and assessing. "Welcome, son. Just in time. We were about to announce the reason for this gathering." He placed a hand on the woman's shoulder, a possessive gesture that made my stomach churn. "Tonight, we celebrate the formal engagement of Prince Kai and Lady Seraphina."

The words hit me like a physical blow. An engagement? Mine? I stared, reeling, as if struck by a lightning bolt. My mind screamed in protest. This was his answer to my defiance. A public, inescapable declaration of my forced compliance, a final severing of any hope I had left to choose my own path, my own heart. The ultimate prison.

My father's grip tightened on my arm, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that only I could hear amidst the distant revelry. "You will accept this, Kai. You will play your part. If you do not, if you make even one move out of line, I will personally ensure the Church has all the resources they need to hunt down every last one of those humans. Starting with the girl. Do you understand?"

The threat was a chilling, explicit promise of destruction. He wasn't just forbidding my interference; he was turning my inaction into a weapon against the very person I desperately wanted to protect. My jaw clenched, but I met his gaze with a facade of cold obedience.

"Perfectly," I bit out, the word tasting like ash.

I was ushered into the sprawling ballroom, Lady Seraphina now clinging to my arm. The music, which had seemed a distant hum, now enveloped me, a suffocating blanket of false joy. My eyes scanned the room, seeing only a blur of celebrating purebloods, none of whom mattered. All that filled my mind was the terrifying image of Krista, Philip, and Anita, hunted and alone, while I stood trapped in a gilded cage.
