Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Tea, Water, and Royal Precedents

The street quieted down as Loke's orange coat slipped out of sight around the corner, leaving behind only the rhythmic thump-thump of wooden beams being set and the rasp of saws. The rest of the crew didn't spare the man a second thought, immediately descending on the bottom tray of the bento like a pack of starved Vulcans.

Within four minutes, the entire three-tiered spread looked like it had been hit by a localized vacuum spell. Rice grains were scraped clean, every drop of glazed sauce was wiped up with steamed bread, and Natsu was actively attempting to lick the raw lacquer off the inner corners until Erza delivered a backhand to the rear of his skull that rattled his teeth.

Kai let out a low, satisfied sigh, snapping the lacquered lids back over the empty tiers. The side latches engaged with a crisp, heavy clack. Resting his back against a freshly stacked oak timber, he threw his arms behind his head and closed his eyes, letting the golden morning sunlight hit his face.

"Ugh. Finally," Kai drawled, tilting his chin up. "Actual food that doesn't smell like Porlyusica's swamp runoff. Easily the best thing I've eaten all week."

"Oh?"

A voice purred directly above him, dripping with a sweet, synthetic melody that immediately flagged Kai's internal radar for incoming trouble.

He cracked one eye open.

Mirajane was hovering less than six inches from his nose, her hands folded neatly over her apron and her long white hair framing a smile so brilliant it could blind a light-elemental—except for the tiny, furious twitch pulsing rapidly over her left eyelid.

"Even better than my cooking, Kai-chan?" she asked, her voice dropping into that terrifyingly soft register she used right before she broke someone's arm.

Kai didn't bother sitting up. He just offered her a slow, thoroughly unimpressed shrug. "If you say so, Clouds."

The radiant smile melted instantly. Mira let out an audible huff, her cheeks puffing up into two round, pale balloons as she crossed her arms tightly over her chest.

Kai chuckled under his breath, pushing himself off the timber log. Stepping up to her, he reached out with his thumb and index finger, casually pinching her puffed cheeks together until her lips flared out into a comical fish-mouth.

"Don't puff your cheeks out like that," Kai said, his tone completely deadpan. "You've already got enough hot air sloshing around inside that head of yours. Any more and you're going to float off over the trees."

Mira froze, her blue eyes going wide as saucers. A brilliant, furious pink flushed across her face before she let out a muffled, outraged squeak.

"Pfft—!" Across the clearing, Cana snorted directly into her wooden flask, spraying booze out of her nose. Macao and Wakaba immediately ducked behind a stack of scaffold planks, their shoulders shaking with snickers.

Kai let go of her face, leaving two faint pink spots on her cheeks, and turned away toward the main street. "Right. I'm taking a walk. Have fun with the manual labor, children."

"Hey! Hold on!" Natsu yelled, wiping his mouth with his forearm. "Gray, Erza, Happy, and me are heading over to Lucy's place to drop her keys off! You oughta come!"

Erza nodded, her gauntlets clanking as she folded her arms. "Indeed. Lucy was exceptionally concerned regarding your recovery, Kai. Your presence would undoubtedly ease her mind."

Kai stopped in his tracks, turning his head back with a completely blank expression.

"So my reward for surviving Porlyusica..." Kai drawled, his voice flat, "...is watching Natsu kick down Blondie's door and get us sued for breaking and entering? Pass. My interest in that is absolute zero."

"Hey, hang on!" Cana called out, swinging her legs off her wooden barrel. "If you're heading into town, I'm tagging along. You need a bodyguard."

"I can come too!" Mira added hastily, smoothing down her skirt with a huff. "Just to make sure your magic pathways don't explode!"

"No," Kai shut them both down instantly, throwing a flat palm up behind his back. "Absolutely not. And for the record, I never signed off on this 'team' nonsense." He cast a dry side-eye back at Cana over his shoulder. "Besides, Brownie, I know your game. My wallet stays in my pocket. I'm looking for peace, not a drained bar tab."

Cana let out an exaggerated groan, throwing her head back, while Mira let out a quiet, mischievous giggle.

"Try not to collapse the framework before it's actually built," Kai called out casually, waving a lazy hand over his shoulder as he hit the cobblestone street.

The thoroughfares of Magnolia were bathed in a crisp, late-morning glare. A cool river breeze swept up from the canal, carrying the faint scent of salt and damp stone.

It was peaceful. Except for one minor detail.

Ever since he had left the forest edge, a tiny, faint mana signature had been tailing him. It stayed tucked deep in the shadow lines of the buildings, tracking him to the construction site and now following him down the market corridor. There wasn't a drop of malice behind it—just an absurd amount of nervous energy.

After ten straight minutes of hearing the subtle scritch-scratch of boots slipping on roof tiles every time he adjusted his stride, Kai decided he'd had enough.

He stopped in a narrow, shaded alleyway between two brick houses, tucked his hands into his coat pockets, and looked up at the roofline.

"Alright," Kai said to the empty air, his voice flat. "Either execute whatever grand plan you've been working on, or clear out. You're testing my patience."

EEEK!

A high-pitched, panicked shriek echoed off the brick walls.

There was an immediate scuffle, the dry crunch of a loose roof tile sliding down an incline, and a figure stumbled out from behind a red-brick chimney, clutching her blue dress with trembling hands. Her face was flushed a violent shade of crimson.

Kai raised an eyebrow. Deep blue hair in tight ringlets, a wide-brimmed felt hat, and dark, saucer-like eyes staring down at him in sheer panic.

A faint, dry smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "Oh. It's you. The raincloud from Phantom."

Juvia Lockser went rigid, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. He... he remembered Juvia! she screamed internally.

"J-Juvia... I..." she stammered out, her voice dropping into a tiny whimper.

Kai sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Get down here, raincloud. Craning my neck like this is giving me a cramp." He grumbled under his breath, "Now I get why the rest of the guild looks so annoyed whenever they have to talk to me..."

Panicking at the thought of causing him physical discomfort, Juvia didn't even use the stairs.

FOOSH.

In a split second, her body dissolved into a stream of clear, pressurized water. She slid off the roofline like a falling ribbon, cascading down through the alley air and reforming smoothly on the cobblestones right in front of him, without leaving a single stray splash on the dirt.

Kai didn't flinch. Instead, he watched the transformation with genuine, academic fascination. No boundary shift in her magic pathways. Her body doesn't process the phase-shift as a spell—it's just an extension of her physical state. Dynamic fluid mechanics at its finest.

Juvia, entirely unaware that her internal magic was being analyzed, stood frozen with her hands clasped tightly over her chest, trembling as her eyes darted everywhere except his face.

"Are you blushing, raincloud?" Kai asked, an amused smirk on his face.

Her head snapped up, her hands waving in wild, frantic circles. "N-No! Juvia is entirely—!"

"Cute," Kai cut in smoothly.

Juvia froze. Her brain completely short-circuited. "Cute?!" echoed through her head like a church bell, sending a literal jet of steam whistling out from beneath her hat.

"So," Kai continued, resting a hand on his hip. "Why the stalker routine?"

Juvia tried frantically to assemble basic words. "J-Juvia... was simply... astounded that Kai-sama retained a memory of her identity."

"Why wouldn't I?" Kai shrugged casually. "We fought, didn't we? And if I remember right..." He leaned forward slightly, fixing her with a sharp, curious look. "...right before your Master fired that spell, I asked if you'd let me run a few diagnostic checks on your water body. I was actually hoping I'd run into you today."

Juvia's world came to a dead stop. He... sought an encounter with Juvia?!

"Y-You wished to meet with Juvia?" she squeaked out.

"Yeah," Kai nodded. "You didn't give me an answer back then—mostly because the building was falling apart. So, what do you say? Will you let me run a few tests on your phase-shifting? It'd save me weeks of research on my spatial techniques."

To Kai, it was a practical academic request. To Juvia, words like diagnostic checks on your body passed through her terrifying internal translation matrix, morphing into a scandalously romantic declaration.

"J-Juvia accedes to your request!" she declared, steam billowing from her hat. "Juvia will allow Kai-sama to examine every inch of Juvia's magic whenever Kai-sama wishes!"

Kai blinked, thoroughly amused by her dramatic phrasing. "Great. Oh, by the way... thanks for the bento earlier."

Juvia's heart skipped a beat. "Y-You enjoyed it?"

"Flavor profile was spotless," Kai said honestly. "Though the high-res rice portrait of my face was bordering on terrifying. Still, good work."

Juvia's eyes sparkled with pure bliss.

"Look, you fed me and agreed to help with my research," Kai said, looking down the street toward the canal. "Basic manners say I should return the favor. There's a tea house down by the river. My treat."

Juvia's jaw dropped. "A... a romantic engagement?!"

Kai smirked, giving her a sly wink. "Sure. Call it whatever helps you sleep at night."

Ten minutes later, they were seated at a secluded corner table on the wooden deck of a riverfront tea house. The gentle sloshing of the canal water provided a peaceful backdrop, completely isolated from the racket of the construction site.

A waitress set down a cup of dark, bitter tea for Kai, along with a berry infusion and a plate of glazed pastries for Juvia.

"Right," Kai began, taking a sip. "Let's handle the introductions properly. I'm Kairos Sunveil. You can drop the titles and just call me Kai."

Juvia sat up rigidly, giving a sharp bow. "Juvia is Juvia Lockser. Formerly of Phantom Lord's Element 4."

"Right, Juvia," Kai said, setting his cup down. "Let's talk mechanics. When you shift into water, is it a conscious spell, or does it trigger automatically when something hits you? And does your mood affect how dense the water is?"

He pulled a small leather notebook and a stylus from his coat, tapping the tip against the wood. For the next hour, Kai ran her through basic, simple tests right at the table—having her liquify a single finger against a napkin or adjust her temperature.

Juvia sat there, completely spellbound. There was no hatred in his eyes. He wasn't treating her like an enemy, or like a freak. He was just genuinely curious, dropping dry, sarcastic jokes whenever she blushed and turned her tea into steam.

"Why would I complain about getting attention from a pretty girl?" Kai remarked casually, resting his chin on his hand. "I might be arrogant, Juvia, but I'm not blind."

Juvia's face flushed bright red, her heart doing flips.

As they finished up, Kai leaned back. "So... what's happening with the rest of your group now that Phantom's gone?"

Juvia's cheerful mood dimmed. She stared down at her tea, her fingers tracing the rim of the cup.

"Phantom Lord was dissolved by the Council," she said softly, her tone heavy. "Master Jose was arrested... and the others scattered. Juvia has nowhere to go."

She looked down at her lap, her voice quiet. "Before I met you... rain always followed Juvia. People hated it. They called Juvia gloomy and depressing... Master Jose was the only one who gave Juvia a place to belong. Even if Phantom was cold... it was my only home."

She looked up, her dark eyes filled with quiet vulnerability. "Now... Juvia has no home. I just... wanted to stay near Kai-sama."

Kai stared at her for a moment, then rubbed the back of his neck, letting out a dry cough. "Jeez. Didn't realize my charm was that fatal."

Juvia blushed, but before she could stammer an apology, Kai gave a light shrug.

"Well," Kai said casually. "If you need a place to anchor yourself... why don't you just join Fairy Tail?"

Juvia went stock-still. "J-Join Fairy Tail?! How could I?! Juvia was an enemy! I attacked your guild... they would never accept someone like me!"

Kai instantly broke into a sharp laugh. "Accept you? Girl, half the idiots in our guild try to murder each other over spilled drinks every morning. Natsu and Gray wreck half the town on a weekly basis."

He met her gaze, his expression softening into a dry smirk. "And the Old Man's a complete softie for stray mages. He doesn't hold you responsible for Jose's crazy decisions—especially not when you're a talented mage. And, well... a pretty cute one at that."

Juvia's breath hitched, her face turning an alarming shade of red.

Kai tossed a stack of Jewels onto the table to cover the bill and stood up, smoothing his coat. "The guild hall is just a pile of lumber right now anyway, so take your time. Finish your tea, walk around town, and think about it."

He tossed her a lazy two-finger salute. "If you decide you want the mark, just walk up to the site and tell Makarov I sent you. See ya around, raincloud."

Juvia sat at the table, watching him walk away into the sunlight, clutching her hands over her chest with a radiant smile as a tear of pure relief slipped down her cheek.

Having secured his morning tea, gathered spatial data, and recruited a powerful former enemy, Kai was in a remarkably good mood as he strolled back toward town.

Naturally, the peace didn't last.

As he reached the main intersection near the railway terminal, shouting shattered the morning quiet.

"OUT OF THE WAY! MOVE IT!"

Four figures came sprinting around the cobblestone corner at full speed, kicking up dust and sending pedestrians diving out of the way. Natsu, Gray, Erza, and Happy were running flat-out, their faces twisted in pure panic.

Kai stopped in the middle of the street, casually stepping two feet to the left as they nearly steamrolled him.

"Whoa, hold up," Kai called out, raising an eyebrow. "What's the fire? Did Blondie toss you out her window already?"

They skidded to a screeching halt, panting for air.

"Kai!" Natsu yelled, wiping sweat off his face. "Lucy's gone!"

"Aye!" Happy cried. "She went back home!"

Kai tilted his head, his amused smirk fading into a flat look. "Gone? Explain."

Erza stepped forward, pulling a crumpled piece of paper from her armor. "We found this in her apartment, Kai. Lucy left... because she believes the attack by Phantom Lord was entirely her fault. She thinks her father caused this, and she went back to her family's estate to settle it alone so Fairy Tail doesn't get dragged into it again."

Erza clenched her metal fist. "She thinks she's protecting us."

Kai listened quietly, letting out a slow, heavy breath. "So... she walked out the door of her own free will to deal with her family?"

"WHAT?!" Natsu roared, taking a furious step toward Kai. "How can you say it like that?! She's our comrade! She's Fairy Tail! We aren't just gonna leave her with that scumbag!"

"He's right, Kai," Gray added, his jaw set tight. "We're taking the next train to the Heartfilia estate to bring her back."

Kai stared at them for a long, quiet moment. He pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out an exhausted sigh.

"...I guess," Kai muttered, sinking his hands into his coat pockets. "I'm coming too."

All four of them froze, blinking in shock.

"Wait... for real?!" Natsu gasped. "You're actually coming?!"

Kai turned toward the train station, his golden eyes narrowing with a dangerous glare.

"Standard self-sacrificing idiot logic from Blondie," Kai grumbled under his breath. "She thinks she's taking the hit for us."

He glanced back over his shoulder at them with a sharp, dry smirk.

"Besides... Jude Heartfilia hired a dark-leaning guild to trash our town, put civilians in the crossfire, and drag his daughter back in chains. He thinks his money makes him untouchable."

Kai rested a hand on his hip, a cold, arrogant edge creeping into his voice. "Back in Crocus, the King and Princess Hisui kept trying to get me to mingle with the upper nobility. I always told them no because rich aristocrats bore me to death... but using my royal credentials to drop an official hammer on a corrupt noble who messed with Fairy Tail?"

He smirked, his eyes flashing with lethal confidence. "Now that sounds like a good use of my afternoon."

Natsu grinned fiercely, cracking his knuckles as fire flared around his hands. "HELL YEAH! Let's go tear his place down!"

"No tearing down," Kai corrected deadpan, stepping onto the station platform. "I'm coming along specifically so you idiots don't turn a legal execution into an accidental war with the Crown."

Erza offered a rare, genuine smile, nodding firmly. "Then let us move out!"

Kai rolled his eyes, trailing behind them toward the train cars. "Yeah, yeah. Just don't make me carry your luggage."
