Chapter 52 - Chapter 52: The Rich Girl’s Garden and the Gearhead’s Gift

The crimson light of the setting sun spilled across the long dirt road leading down from the Heartfilia estate, painting the surrounding rolling hills in warm, honeyed shades of gold and orange.

For the first time since leaving Magnolia, Lucy felt as though she could actually breathe. The confrontation in her father's study still sat heavily in her chest, a lingering ache she knew wouldn't disappear overnight, but something fundamental had shifted. She had looked Jude Heartfilia in the eyes and said what she had spent years being too terrified to speak aloud.

She was going home. Not to an empty mansion filled with silent servants, but back to Fairy Tail.

Lucy slowed her pace slightly until she was walking alongside Kai.

The young mage seemed completely unaffected by the afternoon's events. Hands shoved casually into his coat pockets, his golden eyes drifted lazily over the countryside, looking for all the world like a tourist who hadn't just extorted one of the wealthiest men in Fiore.

Lucy glanced at him out of the corner of her eye three times before finally clearing her throat. "Hey, Kai..."

"Hm?"

"What did you actually talk about with my dad?"

Kai let out a long, theatrical sigh, flicking a stray speck of dust off his cuff. "I merely reminded Jude of the state-level legal liabilities regarding third-party contract devastation. He won't be bothering you or the guild again. He'll be far too busy managing his sudden increase in operational overhead."

He shot a sideways glance down at her. "And relax, Blondie. I didn't physically assault him. Porlyusica's restriction order on my magic applies to breaking noble kneecaps too, unfortunately."

Lucy's face flushed pink. "I-I didn't think you hit him!"

Behind them, Gray let out a loud snort, tossing his hands behind his head. "Well, whatever you two said to the old man, everything worked out."

"Aye!" Happy added, hovering near Erza's shoulder before pointing an accusing paw at Natsu. "Natsu spent the entire train ride here crying about you!"

"I WAS NOT CRYING!" Natsu roared, his cheeks turning as red as his vest. "You were sobbing into your fish!"

"I was worried!" Happy squeaked defensively.

"You were drooling!"

"I was emotionally eating!"

"That's not a real thing!"

A genuine, lighthearted laugh bubbled up from Lucy's chest. The tight knot that had been winding up in her gut since she left her note in Magnolia finally unraveled. "I'm sorry, guys. I really made everyone worry over nothing."

"Of course we worried, idiot," Gray muttered, a faint grin tugging at his lips.

"You're Fairy Tail," Natsu grunted, slapping the back of his neck. "You don't get to just run off without us."

Lucy smiled, her eyes watering slightly, before noticing Erza had come to a complete stop a few paces ahead. The scarlet-haired swordswoman stood atop a small rise, her hand resting lightly on her sword pommel as she gazed across the vast expanse of green fields stretching out toward the horizon.

"This region is quite breathtaking," Erza remarked softly, her gaze sweeping over the distant hills. "The local township must be exceptionally prosperous to maintain such grounds."

Natsu looked around, scratching his spiky pink hair. "Yeah. It's pretty huge. Lots of grass."

"Didn't expect this much open countryside right outside a city," Gray agreed, taking in the view.

Lucy blinked, looking between the three of them. She scratched her cheek awkwardly. "Um... guys?"

Everyone turned to look at her.

"This isn't a town," Lucy admitted, pointing a finger toward the distant mountain range on the horizon. "Everything you can see from here... all the fields, the forest line, and that ridge..."

She slowly swept her hand across the entire panorama.

"...is part of the Heartfilia estate grounds."

Absolute, suffocating silence fell over the dirt road.

Natsu's jaw dropped so low it nearly hit his scarf. Gray's eyes went wide as saucers as he slowly re-scanned the horizon, doing the mental math. Happy's wings flat-lined, causing him to drop three feet straight down before catching himself.

Kai, who had been trailing lazily behind, stopped mid-step. He looked at the distant mountain peak. Then at the endless green meadows. Then at the manicured flower gardens running along the road.

Slowly, his golden eyes locked onto Lucy.

"...Blondie."

"Yes?"

"You neglected to mention your 'house' is a province."

Lucy's face burned. "It's just the outer grounds! It's not that big!"

"THAT MOUNTAIN IS YOUR FRONT YARD?!" Natsu shrieked, grabbing his hair. "WHAT KIND OF FREAKING HOUSE HAS A MOUNTAIN?!"

"THAT ISN'T A GARDEN, THAT'S AN ENTIRE DISTRICT!" Gray yelled, throwing his arms up.

Happy flew in frantic, tight circles around Erza's head. "Captain Erza! They're too rich! My brain is melting!"

Erza hadn't moved an inch. She remained frozen, staring blankly at the distant horizon with a completely unreadable expression. "...The estate breezes are remarkably pristine today."

Happy squeaked in horror. "Erza's broken! The wealth broke her!"

Lucy couldn't hold it back anymore. She doubled over, clutching her stomach as bright, unrestrained laughter echoed across the open fields. All the lingering tension, the fear, and the heavy atmosphere of the estate washed away in that single moment.

Kai watched her for a brief second, the corner of his mouth twitching upward in a faint, rare smile.

Then, effortlessly, he ruined the moment.

"Well, considering the dramatic performance you gave in the study, Blondie," Kai drawled, stepping past her, "technically, none of this province belongs to you anymore. You're effectively homeless."

Lucy's laughter chopped off instantly. She shot him a deadpan glare. "...You are an absolute jerk."

Kai shrugged, adjusting his lapels. "I'm a realist."

An hour later, the group boarded the evening express back to Magnolia.

The moment the train chugged out of the station and hit its cruising rhythm, the iron tracks began their steady clack-clack-clack.

Natsu's energetic bravado vanished in less than thirty seconds. His face turned a deeply concerning shade of boiled spinach, and he slumped sideways onto the wooden bench, groaning miserably.

"Oh, man... my soul... it's leaking out my ears again..." Natsu whimpered, flopping forward onto the table. "Gray... kick me off the train..."

"Get your gross face off my coat, fire-idiot," Gray grunted, shoving Natsu's head away. "Jump off yourself."

"I can't move..." Natsu whined, his eyes rolling up. "Kai... please... do the thing with the lightning..."

Kai didn't even look up from the small metal assembly resting on his lap. "Forbidden by medical decree. Porlyusica's orders were absolute. I am currently a model patient."

"YOU'RE A LIAR!" Natsu wheezed.

Kai reached into his inner coat pocket without breaking his stride. He pulled out a small, palm-sized metallic casing fitted with a single copper dial and tossed it casually across the table. It landed with a soft clink right in front of Natsu.

Natsu blinked through his nausea. "What's... this?"

"A localized nerve dampener," Kai said smoothly, tweaking a tiny screw on his assembly. "Press the brass stud."

"Is it gonna blow up?"

" press it, motion-sickness boy, or suffer in silence."

Natsu fumbled with the casing and jammed his thumb onto the brass stud.

ZAP!

A faint, localized arc of blue electricity snapped across the casing, pulsing directly through Natsu's hands and up his arms. His spine snapped straight like a wooden board, his hair standing on end as his eyes went wide.

"GAH!" Natsu gasped, freezing in place.

Gray flinched back. Happy squeaked and dived behind Erza's shoulder.

Natsu sat frozen for three seconds. Slowly, he let out a breath. He looked down at his hands, then blinked, touching his stomach.

"...Huh?" Natsu mumbled. His eyes lit up. "Wait... the spinning stopped! My stomach isn't doing the weird flipping thing!"

Kai didn't look up from his work. "It temporarily scrambles the motion signals reaching your brain. Don't ask me how. You'd need three textbooks and a functioning attention span."

Natsu stared at the little metal box like it was a sacred relic. Then, his face broke into a massive, manic grin. "KAI! YOU'RE A FREAKING GENIUS!"

Immediately, Natsu began mashing the button repeatedly.

ZAP! "AW YEAH!"

ZAP! "FEELS LIKE LIGHTNING IN MY BRAIN!"

ZAP! "I CAN RIDE A TRAIN FOREVER—"

Gray lunged across the table and snatched the device out of his hands. "Stop electrocuting yourself, you absolute moron! You're twitching!"

"Give it back! It feels awesome!"

Erza narrowed her eyes, turning toward Kai with a stern, authoritative look. "Kai. Porlyusica explicitly forbade you from deploying magic while your origin pathways heal. Indulging in device manufacture that utilizes spellwork—"

Kai held up a single finger, interrupting her mid-sentence as he lifted the casing he was working on. "Zero mana consumption, Red. Pure mechanical kinetic transduction powered by a miniature spring coil and a piezoelectric lacrima crystal."

Erza paused, her brow furrowing slightly as she processed his words. "You manufactured a functional nerve-disruption device without drawing upon your internal magic reserves?"

"Magic is just a cheat code for energy conversion," Kai said dryly, setting his screwdriver down. "Physical engineering existed long before mages started throwing fireballs. I don't need mana to build basic tools."

Erza studied the tiny, intricate casing in Gray's hand, her expression shifting from stern authority to quiet, genuine respect. "...That is remarkably resourceful."

Kai offered her a faint, sharp smirk. "High praise coming from the guild's resident hammer."

A small, metallic click-click came from the edge of the table.

Lucy looked down to see a tiny, polished brass spider scuttling out from under Kai's sleeve. Pixie scurried across the wood with eerie grace, holding a micro-gear between its front legs like a tiny offering. Kai took the gear without looking, clicking it seamlessly into his clockwork assembly.

"Good girl," Kai murmured.

Pixie raised two slender copper legs, clicking happily.

Lucy leaned over the table, her eyes sparkling. "Pixie! Aw, I haven't seen her since before the Phantom attack!" She reached out to scoop the tiny automaton into her palm.

Kai flicked his eyes up. "Don't treat her like a pet, Blondie. She is a multi-threaded spatial resonance scout with adaptive logic routing."

"She's cute," Lucy insisted, letting Pixie climb onto her fingers.

"She possesses higher tactical awareness than ninety percent of this compartment," Kai added deadpan.

Natsu, who was currently trying to bite the train seat's leather armrest to test its durability, paused. Gray, Erza, and Lucy all slowly turned their heads to stare at him.

Natsu blinked, looking back at them with leather between his teeth. "What?"

Pixie clicked twice. Kai nodded. "Precisely."

As the night deepened, the train thundered through the dark countryside toward Magnolia.

Eventually, even Natsu ran out of steam, snoring softly against the window. Kai finally snapped his notebook shut, stretching his arms above his head until his joints gave a satisfying pop.

He rubbed his stomach, letting out a quiet, annoyed noise. "...I'm starving. Hospital food should be classified as a war crime."

Instantly, three pairs of eyes snapped open in the dark compartment.

Natsu was awake in a millisecond. Gray sat up straight. Even Happy's ears twitched forward.

Then, from across the table, came a low, rumbling sound.

Grrrrrrr.

Erza froze mid-movement. A dark, furious blush instantly rushed up her neck, coloring her face bright crimson as she stiffened like a board.

Lucy bit her lip, desperately trying to smother a snort.

Kai stared straight at Erza. Erza stared straight at the wall behind Kai's head.

"...That was the locomotive's steam valve," Erza stated with absolute, terrifying solemnity.

"Ah," Kai nodded gravely. "A very hungry steam valve."

He reached down to the small, unassuming spatial pouch attached to his belt. Though the leather pouch was no larger than an apple, Kai's entire forearm disappeared inside it. With a subtle flick of his wrist, he pulled out a stack of polished wooden bento boxes, setting them across the table one by one.

Natsu's nostrils flared. "FOOD!"

Within seconds, the small train table was transformed into a full spread—steaming meat skewers, seasoned rice balls, roasted vegetables, and fresh bread.

While Natsu and Gray immediately descended into a chaotic fork-war over the meat skewers, Erza reached for a smaller, elegantly wrapped box at the end of the stack. She pulled back the lid and froze.

Inside sat three pristine, perfectly sliced pieces of strawberry cake, topped with fresh glaze and delicate chocolate shavings—bakery-grade confections from the high-end district in Crocus.

Erza's eyes widened, her fork hovering in mid-air. She slowly looked up at Kai. "Kai... where did you get these?"

"Crocus, last week," Kai said, picking up a rice ball. "I bought them for you before the whole Phantom mess went down. Forgot they were sitting in the spatial vault."

Erza stared down at the cakes, her fingers tightening slightly around the fork. "You... bought these for me?"

Kai blinked at her, genuinely puzzled by the question. "Why are you asking that like I don't regularly bring you things?"

There was no particular significance in his voice. No attempt to make the gesture sound special. To Kai, it was simply something he did.

He had always been like that with the people around him. He'd bring Mira a dress whenever he happened across something he thought would suit her, or show up with a bottle of Cana's preferred drink because he'd found a particularly good one while traveling. Natsu occasionally received some bizarre new food he'd discovered, while Gray had been the unfortunate recipient of books, tools, and other things Kai thought might interest him. And Erza had, over the years, somehow become the person he most consistently returned with sweets for.

He remembered her preferences without having to think about them.

Erza's expression softened slightly. "I see." Her voice became quieter. "Thank you, Kai."

"Don't mention it."

Kai immediately returned to his meal as though the conversation had been about nothing more important than the weather. Erza, however, found herself staring at the cake for another moment before carefully cutting off a small piece.

She brought it to her lips.

The moment she tasted it, her eyes widened slightly. The strawberries were fresh, the cream was light without being overly sweet, and the faint bitterness of the chocolate balanced everything perfectly. A quiet, involuntary hum escaped her before she could stop it.

Kai glanced sideways at her.

"You like it."

Erza immediately straightened. "Of course I like it."

"You look like you're about to declare the cake your sworn knight."

A faint blush crept across her cheeks. "I would never do something so ridiculous."

Kai's mouth twitched. "You once threatened a pastry chef because he put the wrong frosting on your strawberry cake."

"He had committed a culinary offense."

"Right. My mistake."

Erza ignored him and took another bite. Then, after a moment's hesitation, she cut off a small piece with her fork and held it across the table toward Kai.

He looked at the fork.

Then at her.

Then back at the fork.

"What's this?"

"You bought it," Erza said simply. "You should have some."

Kai's eyebrow rose. "Are you flirting with me, Titania?"

Erza's cheeks immediately turned pink. "I'm offering you a piece of cake."

"With a fork directly in front of my mouth."

"Just eat it, Kai."

A mischievous smile appeared on his face. "Didn't realize you were this generous."

Erza's eyes narrowed. "Kai."

He chuckled and leaned forward, accepting the bite. He chewed thoughtfully for a moment before giving an approving nod.

"Excellent."

Erza blinked. "You said 'good' earlier."

"I was being modest."

She gave him a suspicious look, but there was the faintest hint of a smile on her lips.

Unfortunately, the exchange had not gone unnoticed.

Across the table, Lucy had completely stopped eating. Gray was staring at them with one eyebrow raised, while Natsu looked between Kai and Erza with the fascinated expression of someone who had just discovered an entirely new species.

Happy slowly peeked over Lucy's shoulder.

"Did Erza just feed Kai?"

Nobody answered.

Lucy leaned slightly toward Gray and whispered, "She did."

"I saw it," Gray whispered back.

Natsu's eyes widened. "Whoa."

Happy's ears perked up. "Does this mean—"

Erza's fork struck the table with a sharp CLANG.

The entire compartment went silent.

She slowly turned toward them, her expression perfectly composed.

"Is there something you wish to say?"

"Nope," Natsu said immediately, turning back to his food.

"Absolutely nothing," Gray added.

Happy disappeared behind Lucy's shoulder. "I saw nothing!"

Lucy tried desperately to suppress her smile. "I wasn't going to say anything."

Erza's eyes narrowed.

"Good."

She calmly returned to her cake.

Kai, meanwhile, was struggling not to laugh.

"You know," he murmured, "for someone who claims not to care what people think, you threatened them remarkably quickly."

Erza took another bite of cake and answered without looking at him.

"I was protecting my dessert."

Kai nodded solemnly. "Naturally."

A tiny series of metallic clicks came from his shoulder. Pixie tilted her brass head toward Erza, then toward Kai.

Kai glanced at her.

"No, Pixie. We're not discussing this."

Erza's blush returned.

"Good."

Just then—

Natsu reached across the table. "Hey, Erza, can also I try a bite—"

SCHWING!

A gleaming broadsword materialized inches from Natsu's nose, embedded halfway into the wooden table.

"Touch it and die," Erza said softly, her face absolute bliss as she took another bite.

Natsu slowly pulled his hand back. "Got it."

Lucy chuckled softly, leaning back against her seat as she watched her friends bicker over the food. The train rocked gently against the tracks, carrying them through the dark night, far away from cold mansions, noble politics, and war.

By the time the train finally pulled into Magnolia station, a full moon hung high in the clear night sky.

The town was quiet, wrapped in the cool night air. The damage from Phantom Lord's attack was still visible—scaffolding lined several streets, and workers were still clearing debris near the river—but the city was already rebuilding, stubborn and resilient as ever.

They walked as a group through the cobblestone streets until they reached the steps of Lucy's apartment building.

Lucy turned around on the bottom step, looking back at them with a soft smile. "Well... this is me."

"See ya tomorrow, rich girl!" Natsu called out, yawning hugely as he stretched his arms.

"Get some sleep," Gray said, tossing a thumbs-up over his shoulder.

"Aye!" Happy cheered.

Erza offered a warm, sisterly nod. "We are glad to have you back, Lucy. The guild wasn't the same without you."

"Thank you," Lucy said, her eyes warm. "All of you."

She turned to walk up the stairs.

"Hold on a second, Blondie."

Lucy paused, turning back around.

Kai reached inside his dark coat, pulling out a small velvet pouch. With a casual flick of his wrist, he tossed it through the air. Lucy caught it out of instinct, the weight of the pouch settling into her hands.

She unstrung the velvet opening and peeked inside. Her eyes went wide.

Inside lay her Celestial Spirit Keys—Gold and Silver alike, gleaming softly under the moonlight.

"My keys..." Lucy gasped, pulling out Gate of the Golden Bull's key. She looked up at him in utter disbelief. "How do you have these?!

Natsu blinked, digging through his vest pockets. "Wait... he had the keys? I thought I had 'em!"

Gray raised an eyebrow, staring at Kai. "Don't tell me you picked his pocket."

Kai shrugged, perfectly unbothered. "I borrowed them."

Lucy's expression instantly darkened, a dangerous vein pulsing near her temple. "Borrowed?"

"I needed to run a few tests," Kai explained calmly. "Celestial keys utilize a very specific cross-dimensional tethering mechanism that I wanted to document."

Natsu pointed a finger at him. "You stole 'em right out of my coat!"

"I borrowed them," Kai corrected smoothly.

"WITHOUT ASKING ME?!" Lucy yelled, stepping down the stairs with her hands on her hips.

Kai paused, considering her question for a fraction of a second. "...You weren't available for consultation."

"THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN JUST TAKE MY SPIRIT KEYS!"

"I returned them completely intact," Kai pointed out. "No structural degradation. No changes."

"DID YOU DISASSEMBLE THEM?!" Lucy shrieked.

"Only virtually," Kai replied deadpan.

"KAI!" the entire group shouted in unison.

Gray slapped a hand over his face. "He really has no concept of personal property."

Erza let out an exhausted sigh, shaking her head. "A truly incorrigible habit..."

Lucy quickly checked over every key, ensuring none of her spirits were harmed, before glaring up at the gearhead. "You can't just take people's precious items whenever you feel like it!"

"Clearly, I can," Kai said, turning on his heel and starting to walk down the street. "I just did."

"DON'T YOU WALK AWAY FROM ME!" Lucy barked.

Kai didn't even slow down.

He simply raised one hand over his shoulder in a lazy wave, continuing down the moonlit street with his hands tucked comfortably into his coat pockets.

Lucy took two furious steps after him before stopping.

"Unbelievable..." she muttered.

She stared at his retreating figure for a moment longer, watching the pale moonlight catch against his golden hair and the brass fittings of his coat.

Then her gaze dropped to the velvet pouch in her hands.

Her precious keys were finally back where they belonged.

Despite herself, the corners of her mouth lifted.

"Honestly..." Lucy sighed, shaking her head. "You're completely hopeless."

A few streets away, Kai's shoulders suddenly shook with a quiet laugh.

Lucy blinked.

"...Did he hear me?"

From beneath Kai's collar, two tiny brass legs emerged.

Pixie peeked over his shoulder.

Click-click-click.

Kai glanced sideways at the little automaton.

"What?"

Click-click. Click-click-click.

Pixie's tiny head tilted toward the distant blonde standing beneath the streetlamp.

Kai followed her gaze.

Lucy was still there, clutching the velvet pouch against her chest.

For a brief moment, the usual smugness in Kai's expression softened.

Then his familiar smirk returned.

"Don't start."

Click-click-click.

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"That's a rather bold accusation coming from a machine with no concept of emotion."

Pixie immediately clicked again.

Kai stared at her.

"...I didn't say she was annoying."

Another rapid series of clicks followed.

Kai sighed.

"You're becoming insufferably observant."

Pixie spun the tiny gear on her back.

Kai's smirk returned.

"Fine. She's loud."

Lucy remained beneath the streetlamp, still watching Kai's retreating figure.

She narrowed her eyes.

"...Why do I suddenly feel like that stupid jerk is saying something about me?"

As though he'd heard her from halfway down the street, Kai suddenly glanced back.

Their eyes met across the moonlit road.

Lucy froze.

For a brief second, neither of them said anything.

Then Kai's mouth curved into the faintest, most irritatingly knowing smile.

Lucy's eye twitched.

That bastard definitely said something.

Before she could shout after him, Kai simply turned around and continued walking, hands tucked casually into his coat pockets.

Lucy stared after him.

"Unbelievable..."

Then—

"HEY, KAI!"

Natsu's voice suddenly thundered through the otherwise quiet street.

Kai stopped.

A few streets behind him, Natsu came running into view, waving the little nerve-dampener above his head.

"DOES THAT SHOCK-BUTTON THING WORK ON FROSTY?!"

Gray's furious voice immediately followed.

"STOP CALLING ME FROSTY, YOU FIRE-BREATHING IDIOT!"

Kai slowly turned his head.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then a thoroughly mischievous grin spread across his face.

His hand slipped into his coat.

"...Now that sounds like a worthwhile experiment."

Gray's expression went pale.

"Kai."

Kai took one step toward him.

"Don't."

Another step.

"Kai, I'm warning you."

Kai's grin widened.

Gray immediately turned and bolted.

"NO! KAI, DON'T YOU DARE!"

Natsu burst into laughter and chased after them.

"WAIT FOR ME!"

"YOU'RE THE ONE WHO GAVE HIM THE IDEA!"

"IT'S FOR SCIENCE!"

Their voices rapidly disappeared down the street, followed by the unmistakable sound of Gray screaming and Kai laughing.

Lucy stood beneath the streetlamp, staring after them in complete disbelief.

She sighed.

Then, despite herself, she smiled.

"Idiots..."

For the first time in a long week, Magnolia didn't feel like a city recovering from a war.

It felt like home again.
