Chapter 564 - Chapter 442

Haotian allowed them to go. Pursuing immediately would have pulled the Second and Sixth Mixed Legions out of the formation they had established while the rest of the army was still organizing behind them. Instead, the teams that had borne the heaviest pressure during the containment battle rotated away from the exposed approaches, fresh cultivators took their places, and the outer formations began shifting toward the roads surrounding the district. The passage no longer needed several layers of fighters packed around it, allowing the army to redistribute its strength toward the directions from which the next battle would come.

The military ground Haotian had selected now functioned as intended. Coalition formations occupied the open space without compressing into one dense body, the northeast formation station had gone dark, Veridian teams controlled the underground approaches capable of threatening the rear, and Celestara cultivators held enough of the surrounding rooftops that the demons could no longer attack the passage freely from above. Later formations continued entering behind that protection, but their arrival no longer dictated every movement at the front.

Haotian kept the leading legions within the roads immediately surrounding the district. The local demon commander had withdrawn deliberately, and the next defensive positions had been chosen with more care than the improvised containment around the Dao Palace of Creation. Sending individual teams deeper before the coalition could support them would give the demons opportunities to isolate smaller formations between buildings and prepared intersections. The advantage gained through the eight o'clock infiltration depended upon remaining concentrated long enough to use it.

Lianhua returned toward the center after the northern side stabilized. She had needed the Voidpierce Sword Sutra only a handful of times during the containment battle, leaving her cultivation far less strained than after the first stronghold assault. She examined the defensive position forming beyond the northern intersection, then remained with the mixed teams rather than moving forward alone.

Yinxue and Ziyue returned from the ruined formation station soon afterward. Neither had wasted cultivation dismantling the entire structure once the firing arrays and supporting relationships failed. Cracked pillars and dark inscription channels remained behind them, damaged enough that the system could no longer threaten the deployment area even though portions of the physical structure still stood.

"The formation station cannot attack this district anymore," Yinxue told Haotian. "The surviving operators withdrew toward the northeast road with the local defenders."

"Leave what remains," Haotian said. "We only needed to stop it from firing on the coalition."

Yinxue nodded and turned her attention toward the roads ahead.

A Veridian officer reported the condition of the underground routes next. The eastern approach had been collapsed after the demons attempted to use it against the coalition, while two other passages remained intact and under observation. One extended farther toward the interior and might still provide the coalition with useful access once the advance resumed.

"Keep the open routes under watch," Haotian said. "Collapse them only if the demons use them against us."

The Veridian officer returned to his teams.

The same principle guided the entire operation. The coalition had not entered the stronghold to destroy every Abyss structure simply because it belonged to the enemy. Command systems, supply depots, defensive formations, and reinforcement routes had been destroyed during the first assault because they directly supported the stronghold's ability to resist. Anything that no longer affected the battle could be bypassed until it became relevant.

Above the district, the aerial fighting was also shifting in the coalition's favor. The demonic platform to the northeast remained occupied and defended strongly enough that taking it directly would cost more than its current value justified, but it no longer controlled the surrounding airspace. Celestara teams occupied several nearby rooftops and prevented the aerial defenders from ranging freely across the military district, forcing them to remain closer to the protection of their platform.

The two Frost Rainbow Falcons worked within those openings rather than attacking the platform themselves. One remained higher above the rooftops, watching for defenders attempting to move around the Celestara positions, while the other crossed lower between structures and attacked only when the fighting exposed a target. Their movement prevented the demons from treating the air above the coalition as uncontested without spending the birds' strength against a fortified position.

Tianlan stayed below them near the northern approach. His recovering forearm had tolerated the fighting so far because he avoided the larger spear rotations that placed the most torque through the healing tissue. He relied on compact thrusts, short redirections, and controlled changes of angle whenever demonic skirmishers reached the coalition line, allowing the mixed teams around him to handle opponents who did not require his direct involvement.

One demon tried to use the shadow of a damaged rooftop to approach the Second Mixed Legion's flank while the Celestara cultivators above were occupied. An Umbrel fighter detected the movement before the attacker reached striking distance and forced him back into the open. The higher Frost Rainbow Falcon immediately changed direction, descended through the exposed angle, and drove the demon toward the road where coalition fighters were already waiting.

Tianlan did not turn to follow the result. The bird climbed again while he continued watching the defensive line beyond the intersection, their cooperation requiring familiarity and battlefield awareness rather than any supernatural connection between them.

The demons were reorganizing around those deeper positions. The company that had first attacked the deployment point now occupied the center of the northern defense with reduced numbers, while another formation held the eastern road and smaller groups covered routes through surrounding structures. Their purpose had changed completely from the first moments after the Dao Palace of Creation opened.

They were no longer attempting to reach the passage.

They were trying to keep the coalition inside the military district.

That was a far more sustainable objective. Intact buildings narrowed several approaches, intersections offered places for defensive formations to overlap, and ranged cultivators could use windows and elevated walkways without exposing themselves in the open ground the coalition now controlled. Every delay also increased the likelihood that the front or central reserves would receive the local commander's reports and begin moving toward eight o'clock.

Haotian could already sense the growing communication activity deeper inside the stronghold. Formation signals traveled toward multiple command positions, while physical messengers moved along separate routes in accordance with the redundancy the demons had adopted after the first assault. He made no attempt to send Umbrel cultivators deep into hostile districts simply to intercept every message.

The stronghold would learn where the coalition had appeared.

Preventing that had never been the purpose of the second assault.

The advantage came from forcing the enemy to learn after the coalition was already established inside the flank.

Communication officers set up a temporary command position within the protected depth of the military district, allowing reports from the Second, Sixth, Celestara, Umbrel, and Veridian formations to be gathered on the stronghold side of the passage rather than carried back into the Dao Palace of Creation. The command post remained far enough behind the combat layers that movement around it did not interfere with the roads or the treatment area. Xuanyin stayed inside for the moment, but the structure she would eventually take over was already functioning.

Shuyue shifted closer to that protected depth while remaining behind the first combat formations. The accumulation of abyssal pressure had begun affecting several fighters who had endured repeated ranged attacks, but she resisted extending the Dao Palace of Virtues across the entire coalition. When two members of an eastern mixed team began reacting prematurely whenever demonic cultivation rose beyond the next road, Shuyue stabilized their breathing and judgment just long enough for them to recover their discipline.

Once the problem passed, she withdrew the support instead of maintaining it unnecessarily. The restraint left her with far more cultivation for the prolonged fighting that would follow once the coalition drove deeper into the base.

Liora and the Veridian healers worked from a treatment position near one of the low military structures. Fighters with injuries that could be stabilized quickly received enough treatment to prevent further damage before being held in the protected depth for reassessment, while anyone requiring more extensive care was returned through the Dao Palace of Creation. The system kept wounded cultivators from accumulating behind the forward formations and allowed the healers outside to preserve their strength for casualties that required immediate battlefield treatment.

With the local threats around the passage controlled, Haotian turned his attention completely toward the roads ahead.

The coalition possessed enough depth to begin testing the next defensive positions without committing the entire army. The Second Mixed Legion advanced first along the northern road, with Blue Sphere cultivators forming the stable contact line and Umbrel observers moving through adjoining structures to watch for concealed threats. Marephoros remained close enough to shape the road edges if the demons attempted to widen around the formation, while Pyrelith cultivators held behind the first contact rather than releasing broad attacks through a confined approach filled with allies.

The demons responded before the coalition reached the intersection. Their front line moved forward only far enough to meet the leading teams, leaving much of the company behind the prepared position. The local commander had no intention of recreating the failed containment battle by committing everyone into open ground. His soldiers needed only to slow the coalition and withdraw before they became trapped.

The first collision remained compact. Blue Sphere cultivators absorbed the heaviest attacks and prevented the demons from breaking through the center, while Marephoros pressure limited movement along the edges of the road. Pyrelith fighters entered the close exchanges individually, applying concentrated force through openings rather than filling the narrow street with destruction that would hinder their own formation.

The demons contested the road without fighting to the death over it. When several coalition teams gained enough ground to threaten the intersection itself, the forward defenders withdrew behind the next prepared position. Ranged attacks from windows and elevated walkways covered their movement, forcing the coalition to maintain its defenses rather than immediately rushing after them.

The retreat cost the demons another stretch of ground but preserved most of the soldiers involved.

Haotian recognized the purpose immediately.

The local commander was trading space for time.

A similar exchange developed along the eastern approach. Sixth Mixed Legion teams pushed toward the next intersection and met defenders already prepared to retreat through several successive positions rather than make one decisive stand. The coalition continued gaining ground, but each advance required enough organization that the formations could not simply run through unfamiliar streets and expect the demons to collapse in front of them.

That was acceptable.

Haotian did not need the second assault to remain hidden. He needed the larger demonic response to arrive after the coalition had enough space to maneuver and enough formations outside the Dao Palace of Creation to receive it without being compressed against the opening.

The local defenders had already failed to prevent that.

He extended the Dao of the Universe toward the deeper stronghold and followed the first changes beyond the eight o'clock sector. Communication activity around the central districts had increased considerably, and formations that had remained stationary during the opening battle were beginning to shift. The movements were still too early to determine how much strength the surviving Demon Generals intended to commit, but the reaction had clearly moved beyond the authority of the local commander.

Someone deeper inside the stronghold had received the reports.

Haotian drew his perception back before extending it aggressively enough to advertise his attention. The coalition did not need exact answers yet. Once the heavy reserves began moving in force, their routes would reveal which positions the surviving Demon Generals were willing to weaken in order to answer the attack at eight o'clock.

Around him, the military district had ceased functioning as a deployment problem. The passage remained protected behind organized formations, the immediate underground and aerial threats were under control, the local defensive systems capable of striking the opening had been neutralized, and the forward legions were already pushing the surviving defenders toward the next intersections.

The enemy still held the roads deeper into the stronghold, and those roads would have to be taken from disciplined troops rather than abandoned for free. The difference was that the coalition would meet them as an established army instead of formations still trying to emerge from the Dao Palace of Creation.

Haotian looked toward the northern and eastern approaches where the local companies continued withdrawing through prepared positions. They remained organized, dangerous, and capable of buying the stronghold time.

What they could no longer do was drive the coalition back out of the eight o'clock sector.

The flank was secure.

The first confirmed report from eight o'clock reached the surviving Demon Generals after the coalition had already secured the military district. The message arrived through a formation relay restored after the first assault, but a physical messenger carrying the same information was already moving along a separate road in case the transmission failed. Neither report described a small infiltration force or a temporary breach. Both stated plainly that Haotian had entered the southwestern sector, opened the Dao Palace of Creation from inside the stronghold, and deployed multiple mixed legions before the local defenders could contain the opening.

The General overseeing the central response formations read the transmission twice before comparing it against reports from six and twelve o'clock. No coalition army had appeared outside the damaged front gates, and the reinforced rear had detected no attempt to repeat the original infiltration. The absence of activity in both directions removed the possibility that eight o'clock was merely a distraction covering another major assault. The coalition's main force was already inside the flank.

"The front reserve cannot remain entirely at six o'clock," one General said through the communication formation. "If we leave it there, the southwestern sector will continue losing ground before the central formation can contain the advance."

Another General answered from a separate command position. "If we move the entire front reserve, the damaged gate district loses most of the mobile force protecting it. Haotian could still redirect part of the coalition toward six once he is inside."

The disagreement was not over whether eight o'clock required reinforcement. The question was how much strength they could move without turning Haotian's chosen flank into a lever that weakened the rest of the stronghold for him. The first assault had already demonstrated what happened when local responses were allowed to pull entire formations away from useful positions.

The central General studied the surviving road network. The quickest heavy response came from the central formation positioned around the interior intersection, but sending it directly toward eight o'clock would uncover several roads connecting the surviving eastern and northern sectors. The front reserve needed longer to reach the flank but could move without exposing as many internal routes, provided enough soldiers remained behind the damaged gates to prevent a direct breakthrough.

"We divide the response," he said. "Send part of the central formation toward eight o'clock now. The rest holds the interior intersection. The front reserve sends one reinforced company through the lateral road and keeps the remainder near six."

The front commander did not object immediately. The proposal sacrificed speed in exchange for preserving enough strength in both regions to avoid opening a second major weakness. It also meant the first heavy reinforcement reaching eight o'clock would not be large enough to overwhelm the coalition alone, but the Generals no longer expected any single local force to solve the problem.

"What about the twelve o'clock response companies?" the front commander asked.

"Keep them where they are for now. Moving them across the stronghold will take too long to affect the opening battle, and stripping the rear would remove the surveillance we built specifically because Haotian already used that route once."

The order went out.

Across the interior, formations that had spent days preparing for attacks from entirely different directions began turning toward eight o'clock. Officers reorganized marching order around roads not chosen for this purpose, messengers redirected local commands, and several groups that had expected to support the front now began moving laterally through the stronghold instead. The response was controlled, but no order could remove the distance those formations still needed to travel.

Haotian felt the change before the first heavy reinforcement came anywhere near the military district.

Through the Dao of the Universe, he followed the movement of several larger groups separating from positions that had remained stable throughout the infiltration and deployment. One left the central interior intersection and began moving southwest through a surviving military road. Another force shifted away from the front district in a narrower formation suited for lateral movement rather than direct gate defense.

The demons had chosen the compromise he expected.

They were reinforcing eight without abandoning six or the center completely.

That made their response slower than a total commitment, but it also preserved enough strength elsewhere that the coalition could not assume the rest of the stronghold had become open ground. Haotian respected the decision precisely because it forced him to continue thinking beyond the first advantage.

He returned his attention to the local battle.

The Second Mixed Legion had pushed the northern defenders beyond the next intersection, while the Sixth had gained enough ground along the eastern road that the two advances were beginning to form a broader front rather than separate probes. The local demons continued withdrawing in good order, refusing to let either legion trap them against buildings or cut their retreat routes. Ranged attacks and smaller formation nodes covered each movement long enough for the defenders to establish another line deeper inside.

Haotian did not accelerate the advance yet.

The larger response was finally moving, which meant the coalition now possessed the entire area. The front reserve had partially weakened six o'clock. The central formation had split. The rear remained fixed because it was too far away to matter early. Those choices created the battlefield Haotian wanted, but exploiting it required the coalition's command structure to be fully established on the stronghold side of the passage.

Xuanyin crossed from the Dao Palace of Creation once the temporary command post confirmed that the military district and its surrounding approaches could protect her arrival. She came through without escort beyond the officers already assigned to the command formation, because the passage no longer opened directly onto contested ground. The reduced physical strain of simply walking through the stabilized connection allowed her to preserve the cultivation she would need if the battle eventually reached the command depth.

Haotian met her near the campaign map that had been transferred into the district.

"The central formation split," he said. "One portion is moving toward us. The front reserve also sent a reinforced company away from six o'clock."

Xuanyin immediately looked at the marked roads rather than asking him to repeat what those movements meant. "How much of the front reserve stayed behind?"

"Most of it."

"Then they are trying to answer the flank without giving us an easy second objective."

"Yes."

Xuanyin shifted the marker representing the approaching central force. "The local defenders only need to delay us until these groups arrive. If we stay inside this district too long, their response becomes the new front."

"That is why we move before they finish forming it."

The temporary command post began changing from deployment control to offensive coordination. Reports from the Second and Sixth Mixed Legions were consolidated into the new map, while Umbrel observers updated the roads ahead and Celestara cultivators reported which elevated positions remained occupied deeper inside the sector. Veridian teams marked the underground routes still usable and identified which ones could threaten the coalition once the march resumed.

Xuanyin examined the reports quickly. "The northern road gives us the broadest path inward, but the local defenders have concentrated more heavily there. The eastern road is narrower, but their resistance is thinner."

Haotian looked across both directions. "We do not split the army between them. The northern road remains the main direction of advance. The eastern formations pressure their side so they cannot move everything north, then rejoin once the main body passes the next district."

Xuanyin agreed and began issuing the change through the legion commanders.

The order preserved the concentration that had carried the coalition through the first assault. The eastern teams would not become a second army operating independently through unfamiliar streets. They would create pressure, deny easy reinforcement toward the northern line, and remain close enough to reconnect once the coalition punched inward.

The local demon commander recognized the change almost as soon as the Second Mixed Legion began reorganizing around the northern approach. He had expected the coalition to continue widening gradually from the military district until heavier reinforcement arrived. Instead, the formations behind the front started compressing their depth into a direction of advance.

He understood what that meant.

The deployment phase was over.

The local commander ordered another controlled withdrawal toward the next defensible intersection and moved additional ranged cultivators into elevated positions overlooking the northern road. He did not waste soldiers trying to retake the military district now that the coalition had filled it with organized formations. His remaining task was to buy enough time for the central and front reinforcements to arrive before Haotian reached deeper internal routes.

That decision kept the demons dangerous.

The coalition would not be walking through abandoned streets simply because the eight o'clock deployment had succeeded. Every intersection could still be contested, every military structure could shelter another delaying formation, and the deeper roads would eventually carry enemies far stronger than the local companies already fighting. The advantage Haotian had created was not immunity from resistance. It was the right to meet that resistance before the enemy finished concentrating it.

The family gathered closer to the main direction of advance without forming one cluster around Haotian. Lianhua moved toward the left side of the northern formation, where her Space principles could help break layered defenses without forcing the mixed teams to abandon their positions. Yinxue and Ziyue held separate places near the center, while Yueru remained farther right where she could see the formations developing across the eastern approach.

Xiangyin positioned herself where the road widened enough for her spear to use its reach, with Yanfei close enough to support that space through Frostfire without covering the entire street. Shuyue remained deeper beside the command depth, where she could reinforce whichever legion began losing stability once the advance stretched away from the military district. Liora and the Veridian healers prepared to move their treatment line forward only after the first formations cleared the next intersection.

Tianlan joined the northern battle march with the same two Frost Rainbow Falcons. The third remained inside the Dao Palace of Creation with the reserve formations, exactly as planned. His spear rested at a comfortable angle that did not place unnecessary strain through the healing forearm, while the Falcons shifted between the nearby rooftops and the air above the coalition rather than flying far ahead into defenses no one had yet examined.

The Second Mixed Legion formed the first combat layer.

The Sixth settled behind it.

Additional mixed formations created enough depth that the army could absorb a strong counterattack without forcing the passage itself back into the frontline. The command post remained behind them, healers farther back still, and reserves occupied positions from which they could reinforce either the main direction of advance or the eastern pressure without crossing through one another.

Haotian waited until those relationships settled.

He did not need every remaining cultivator inside the Dao Palace of Creation to emerge before the offensive continued. Enough combat strength was already outside to sustain the next phase, and keeping part of the reserve inside preserved flexibility if the battle later required fresh formations in another part of the stronghold. The passage could remain open while the army moved away from it, just as it had during the first assault.

Xuanyin received another report from the Umbrel observers.

"The central reinforcement is still moving southwest," she said. "The front company has reached the lateral road. Neither is close enough to support the local defenders yet."

Haotian looked toward the northern intersection. The demons there had finished establishing their next delaying position, with shielded cultivators covering the road, ranged fighters distributed through elevated structures, and officers holding farther back where they could control the withdrawal once the line became untenable. They intended to make every stretch of ground cost time.

That was exactly why the coalition could not remain still.

"The Second Mixed Legion takes the northern intersection," Haotian said. "The Sixth follows close enough to reinforce without crowding them. The eastern formation keeps pressure on that road and does not pursue beyond supporting distance."

Xuanyin transmitted the order.

No battle cry followed.

The leading teams simply began moving.

Blue Sphere cultivators advanced beneath layered defenses, Pyrelith fighters close enough behind them to punish any dense resistance, while Marephoros controlled the available movement along the road. Umbrel teams entered the adjoining structures only far enough to prevent hidden attacks against the flanks, and Celestara cultivators shifted along the rooftops above the advancing formation.

The demons opened fire before the coalition reached the intersection.

Ranged abyssal techniques crossed the street from several angles, striking the first barriers and forcing the leading teams to slow without stopping. Blue Sphere cultivators absorbed the first impact while Marephoros shifted pressure beneath the formation to keep the line from compressing backward. Celestara fighters answered the elevated positions, forcing several ranged demons to abandon clean firing angles and defend themselves.

The coalition continued forward.

Haotian moved with the leading pressure rather than remaining beside the command post. The deployment area no longer required him there, and the strongest enemy resistance would soon arrive from deeper inside the stronghold. He passed the outer edge of the Second Mixed Legion as the first close exchanges began at the intersection.

Behind him, Xuanyin remained with the command depth and the broader battlefield map.

Ahead, the demons held their delaying line while the first heavy reinforcements were still marching toward eight o'clock.

The coalition had entered exactly when Haotian intended, established itself before the stronghold could concentrate against it, and forced the surviving Demon Generals to weaken other positions in order to respond.

Now the second assault could truly begin.
