Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

"Mother…" Serena's voice was a fragile thread, barely audible above the gentle drip of water echoing through the cavern. "May I go outside for a little while? I want to collect some herbs."

Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, a nervous fidget betraying her calm exterior. Her long, white hair, the color of fresh snow, cascaded down her back like spun silk, shimmering faintly in the ethereal, jeweled light that illuminated their subterranean home.

Her mother, Elen, looked up from her work, her brow furrowed in concentration as she meticulously ground roots into a fine powder. The rhythmic grinding of the pestle against the mortar was the only other sound besides the water.

"No," Elen replied, her voice firm but laced with a mother's inherent concern. "It's too dangerous. You know what the world is like now. The unending snow, the biting frost—it's not natural, not normal anymore."

Serena's voice was quick, eager to assuage her mother's worries. "I know, Mother. But I won't go far. Just near the outer edge of the warded boundary. Please, Mother. I'll be careful. I promise."

Elen hesitated, her gaze softening as she met her daughter's pleading eyes. Serena had always been responsible, careful, a child of the hidden world who possessed an unusual curiosity for the world beyond. Elen knew that curiosity, that thirst for knowledge, was a part of Serena's very essence.

Finally, she sighed, a weary sound that spoke of years spent shielding her daughter from the harsh realities of the surface world. "Very well," she conceded, her voice laced with reluctance. "But only for a short while. And stay within the warded boundary. If you feel anything—anything—strange, you return immediately. Understand?"

Serena's face lit up, a radiant smile transforming her features. "Thank you, Mother! I will! I swear I'll be safe."

She quickly kissed her mother's cheek, already turning towards the narrow path that led out of their hidden sanctuary. As she reached the cave's mouth, a small voice called out from behind.

"Sister! Wait!"

Serena turned to see her younger brother, Timo, only five years old, running towards her with outstretched arms. His small face was a picture of eager anticipation.

"I want to come with you!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with childish enthusiasm.

Serena knelt, gently cupping Timo's face in her hands and kissing his cheek. "Next time, Timo. I'll be very quick. This time, it's just a quick trip for herbs."

"But I want to go outside too!" he insisted, his lower lip trembling slightly.

Serena ruffled his hair, trying to soothe his disappointment. "I'll bring you back something pretty, okay? A special snowflake, maybe? Now be good and help Mama with her work."

Timo pouted, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and longing as he watched his sister disappear down the narrow path, her white dress fluttering behind her like a ribbon in the wind.

Elen came up behind him, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"Come, let's make supper," she said gently, her voice soothing. "Your sister will be back soon. She'll bring you that special snowflake."

As soon as Serena stepped out of the cave's hidden entrance, she gasped, her breath catching in her throat. The world outside was breathtaking, a scene of stark beauty and unsettling strangeness.

A thick blanket of snow covered the land, pristine and untouched, as if the world itself held its breath. The trees, their branches heavy with ice crystals, shimmered with an ethereal glow under the pale light of an enchanted sky. Despite the biting cold that pierced her skin, a profound sense of peace settled over her, an otherworldly silence that enveloped her like a dream.

"Oh… how beautiful," she whispered, her voice awed by the scene before her. "Even with all the cold… it still feels like a painting."

She twirled once, laughing softly as snowflakes landed on her lashes, their delicate touch a stark contrast to the harsh reality of their hidden existence.

Their cave, concealed beneath an ancient illusion spell, was a sanctuary of warmth and wonder. Glowing crystals illuminated its depths, waterfalls cascaded down its walls, vines bloomed in vibrant colors, and the earth beneath their feet pulsed with a gentle warmth. Wild creatures, long extinct in the world above, roamed freely within its protective embrace. There was no snow inside, only light, warmth, and the comforting presence of magic.

But Serena had always been drawn to the unknown, to the mysteries that lay hidden beyond the veil of their enchanted sanctuary. Now, alone for the first time, her heart throbbed with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.

She wandered deeper into the forest, carefully marking her path in the pristine snow. She gathered herbs that grew stubbornly near the roots of frost-covered trees, humming softly to herself, a melody as delicate as the snowflakes that danced around her.

"I'll only stay a little longer," she murmured, trying to reassure herself. But time, in its deceptive nature, slipped away unnoticed. And with it, her carefully marked path began to disappear.

After what felt like only a few minutes, she paused, a prickling unease settling over her. Something felt profoundly wrong. She turned, but the tracks she had so carefully made were already fading beneath the relentless snowfall. The trees around her seemed unfamiliar—taller, denser, their branches reaching out like skeletal claws against the pale sky.

"…Wait," she whispered, a growing sense of panic tightening her throat. "This isn't the way back."

A low growl echoed from somewhere nearby, a sound that sent a shiver down her spine. Serena froze, her senses on high alert. She spun around, but saw nothing but the menacing silhouettes of the trees. Yet, her heart pounded in her chest, a frantic drumbeat against the silence.

The growl came again, this time closer, more menacing. She took a hesitant step back, her breath fogging the frigid air. A dark shape darted between the trees, too quick, too large to be any creature she knew.

Before she could even consciously think, her legs moved, propelling her forward in a desperate flight. Her white dress trailed behind her, a ghostly ribbon in the snow, as she ran, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

"I shouldn't have come this far," she cried, her voice barely a whisper against the howling wind.

Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet trembled violently. A thunderous rumble shook the earth, a sound that spoke of something immense and terrifying. She looked up, and on a ridge above her, a herd of frosthorn elk, their antlers adorned with shimmering ice, stampeded wildly, fleeing from something unseen. Their hooves thundered against the frozen ground, sending tremors through the forest.

Then, with a deafening CRACK, the snow beneath Serena's feet gave way. She screamed as she plunged into the earth, tumbling down a hidden icy slope concealed beneath the forest floor. Her leg twisted violently, her side slammed against a jagged rock. She landed hard on her back, a searing pain shooting through her ankle.

Blood trickled from her nose, staining the pristine snow a shocking crimson. Her vision blurred, the world tilting precariously. Everything spun, a dizzying vortex of pain and fear.

"…Mother…" she whispered, her voice fading into the chilling silence of the forest.

A faint crunch of snow echoed nearby – the sound of hooves. Through her fading vision, Serena saw a shadowy figure approach, mounted on a tall black horse. The cold bit deep into her skin, numbing her senses, but her fingers twitched, then slowly, shakily, she raised one hand towards the approaching stranger. Her vision pulsed in and out, the world tilting, fading. She could just make out boots crunching through the frost, a long dark cloak, and the quiet, measured breath of a powerful beast. The figure dismounted. His voice was calm, low, almost distant, as if carried on the wind itself.

"Very well… that sounds fair."
