Chapter 22 - Chapter 22

Emma sat at the kitchen table

A notebook open before her

Pen in hand

She was making a list

Names

Places

Dates

Each line represented a man Marcus had worked with

Each name had once been hidden in the shadows

Now they were being pulled into the light

Damon entered the room

A file in his hand

His expression sharp

But not cold

He placed the file beside her

Another name confirmed

Emma looked at the photo inside

A man in a suit

Smiling at a charity gala

This one runs a shelter for girls

But behind the curtains

He is another predator

Emma felt her stomach twist

He hides behind kindness

Damon sat beside her

We take them down one at a time

They worked through the morning

Calling Leo

Gathering statements

Reaching out to journalists

By noon

Emma leaned back

One hand over her stomach

The baby kicked again

This little one has been dancing all morning

Damon smiled

Maybe they feel the fire in you

She chuckled softly

Or maybe they are ready to join the fight

That evening

They met Leo in a private office downtown

The windows were tinted

The walls thick with soundproofing

Leo looked tired

But his eyes were focused

I ran background checks on the rest of the list

It is worse than we thought

Some of these men are politicians

Business owners

Even police chiefs

Emma looked at him

How many victims

Leo hesitated

Dozens

Maybe more

Emma closed her eyes

We expose them all

Every last one

Leo nodded

We have to be careful

This goes deeper than Marcus ever admitted

If we push too fast

They will silence the evidence

Or worse

Damon leaned forward

We do not stop

We do not slow

But we move with precision

Leo placed another folder on the table

Then we begin here

This man funds schools

But in reality

He uses them to recruit girls

Underage

Vulnerable

Emma felt nausea rise

Not from the baby

But from rage

I want him gone

They planned all night

Carefully

Smartly

By morning

Emma was back at the Haven

Meeting with victims

Her heart open

Her voice calm

A girl no older than sixteen sat across from her

Eyes wide

Hands shaking

He said he would help me with college

He promised me a future

But he locked me in a room for days

Emma reached across the table

Held her hand

You are safe now

You are not alone

We believe you

Later

As the sun dipped low

Emma sat in her office

Head bowed

Damon entered

Carrying a small gift box

What is that

He smiled

Open it

Inside

A small silver bracelet

Delicate

Etched with one word

Hope

Emma touched the metal

Her eyes glassy

It is beautiful

He kneeled beside her chair

Because you are the reason many will keep fighting

You gave them hope

That night

They released the first article

Exposing the man who ran the fake schools

It spread fast

Social media

News channels

TV screens

The man was arrested within hours

Evidence too strong to deny

Emma stood watching the news

Her heart steady

One down

More to go

Damon came up behind her

Arms around her waist

You changed the story

You turned the nightmare into justice

Emma looked back at him

We did this

The next few weeks were quiet but tense

Each day brought another file

Another name

Another step toward justice

But with every move

The threats grew louder

Anonymous letters

Broken glass outside the Haven

Phone calls that ended in silence

Damon tightened security

Leo installed cameras

But Emma never flinched

One afternoon

As she returned from a meeting

A car blocked the road

Damon was in the passenger seat with her

He reached for her hand

Stay calm

A man stepped out

Face hidden behind dark sunglasses

He approached slowly

Hands raised

I come with a warning

Damon stepped out

Standing between Emma and the man

Who are you

The man's voice was low

Someone who used to work for them

I escaped

I know what they are planning

They know you are coming

And they will strike soon

Emma got out slowly

Face steady

Then tell us everything

The man nodded

But not here

They are listening

That night

They met again in a safe location

The man revealed names even Leo did not have

Including one that made Damon's eyes darken

Gregory Hale

A retired senator

He funded Marcus

Protected him from prison

And now he is trying to clean up the mess

Emma sat very still

He is the top of the chain

The man nodded

You take him down

The rest fall like dominoes

Emma stood slowly

Hand over her belly

Then we burn the chain at the top
