Chapter 98 - 98 — A Mirage

For the past few hours, the servant had been relentlessly searching for Eiran, as if the boy might sink into the very soil. 

When Zayden stated that this was the place where he had found him, Ren stopped scouring the ground. Instead, he walked behind the General, silently guiding the way.

When the General tried to turn, Ren's hands shot up, gripping his shoulders firmly. 

"What if I get attacked from behind?" the General asked, suspicion lacing his tone. 

What if you stab me in the back? 

He would have asked if not for the fact that the hands pressing against his were shaking. He held the words from slipping. 

"I will shield you. Just look forward." 

It was more command than reassurance. Ren knew it. And yet, to his relief, Zayden obeyed without further question.

Not long after, two men appeared, hardly stronger than third-grade soldiers in Zayden's army. 

"Where is my son?" He demanded.
