Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Race Against Death

After leaving the shopping mall, Lin Yi continued his journey as a Didi driver. He completed two more trips, both with ordinary passengers who went through the predictable emotional rollercoaster of disbelief, astonishment, and finally, utter admiration while riding in the Koenigsegg. For Lin Yi, these reactions were already starting to become familiar. He simply drove in silence, playing the role of the mysterious driver with an impossible car.

As night began to cast its veil over the city, a new order notification appeared. This time, the pickup location was the Liang Corporation Tower, the headquarters of one of the largest multinational conglomerates in the city. The name alone commanded respect from anyone who heard it. Without much thought, Lin Yi accepted the ride and pointed his mechanical beast towards the skyscraper gleaming in the night.

He arrived on time, but there was no one waiting at the main entrance. Usually, customers would be waiting or would emerge as soon as they saw the car arrive. Lin Yi waited patiently for a few more minutes, but there was still no movement. He decided to call the customer.

"H-hello..." A weak, broken female voice came from the other end of the line, interspersed with pained gasps.

Lin Yi frowned slightly. "Hello, this is your Didi driver. I've arrived at the Liang Corporation Tower."

"Please... please..." The voice grew more urgent. "The office... top floor... I... I can't move..."

With that, the other end fell silent, save for a faint moan followed by the sound of heavy breathing. Lin Yi's heart suddenly tightened. This was no ordinary situation. This was an emergency. Without a moment's hesitation, he turned off the engine, opened the door, and sprinted towards the building's main entrance.

"Stop! What are you doing?" Two tall security guards immediately blocked his path, their eyes filled with suspicion. A Didi driver trying to barge into the headquarters of Liang Corporation? A ridiculous notion.

"My customer is in danger on the top floor," Lin Yi said quickly, his voice low and authoritative, completely unlike that of a typical driver. "She can't move. I need to get up there now."

"That's impossible. Do you have an appointment? Do you have any identification?" one of the guards said, his hand already on his electric baton.

Lin Yi knew that arguing would only waste precious time. He looked directly into the guard's eyes, the calmness and seriousness in his gaze seeming to possess an invisible power. "Every second we stand here could be putting a life at risk. If your CEO, Liang Ruoxin, has something happen to her in her office because of your delay, can you bear that responsibility?"

He had named the most powerful CEO in the entire building. The two guards were stunned. How did a Didi driver know the CEO's name? And why was he so certain she was the one in distress? Lin Yi's assertiveness made them waver. Just then, one of their phones rang. It was the head of security calling from the control room, his voice frantic: "Let him up, now! We've lost camera access to the chairman's office, and her last outgoing call was to his number!"

Without another word, the guards immediately stepped aside, even helping him swipe the special elevator card reserved for the executive board.

The elevator shot upwards to the top floor. The moment the doors opened, Lin Yi rushed out. The chairman's office was vast and luxurious, but it now held a deathly stillness. On an expensive Persian rug, a woman in an elegant business dress lay curled up, her face ashen white, her forehead drenched in a cold sweat as she clutched her lower abdomen. It was Liang Ruoxin, the famous iron lady of the business world, whose image was always one of strength and decisiveness.

"Are you alright?" Lin Yi knelt beside her, his voice remaining preternaturally calm.

Liang Ruoxin pried open her weary eyes to look at him. The intense pain was causing her to nearly black out, but she clung to her last shred of consciousness. "Hospital... quickly..."

Lin Yi glanced at her condition. These symptoms most likely pointed to acute appendicitis or something even more serious. Calling an ambulance at this hour, with the city's traffic, would undoubtedly be too late.

"Alright, I'll take you," he said with certainty.

Without any hesitation, he gently but firmly swept Liang Ruoxin up into his arms. Her body was limp and burning with fever. In her hazy state, Liang Ruoxin was aware of a steady embrace and a clean, masculine scent. The calmness of this stranger, in a life-or-death situation, gave her an inexplicable sense of security.

He carried her into the elevator, walked straight through the main lobby under the astonished gazes of the entire security staff, and placed her in the passenger seat of the Koenigsegg. He carefully fastened her seatbelt, then darted into the driver's seat.

In his mind, he gave the System a command: "Find the hospital with the best surgical department. Plot the fastest route, ignoring all traffic regulations."

A 3D map materialized in his consciousness. Instantly, the Koenigsegg roared furiously, transforming into a black shadow that shot into the night.

The race against death had begun.

Liang Ruoxin felt like she was riding a rocket. The scenery outside the window was no longer buildings or streets, but endless streaks of light. The car slipped through the narrowest of gaps at unimaginable speeds. The G-force pressed her deep into her seat. She wanted to scream in terror, but the physical pain overwhelmed even that fear. She could only bite her lip, trying to keep herself conscious.

"Are... are you trying to kill us?" she whispered.

"No, I'm trying to save you," Lin Yi's voice replied, as calm and steady as a rock. "Trust me."

In that moment, Liang Ruoxin did. She closed her eyes, entrusting her life to this unknown Didi driver. She no longer had the energy to wonder why a Didi driver had a supercar, or why he possessed such terrifying driving skills. The only thing she knew was that this man was her only hope of survival.

Twelve minutes. That was how long it took to cover a distance that would normally take nearly an hour. The Koenigsegg screeched to a halt in front of the emergency room entrance of Central Hospital, the sound of its tires protesting against the asphalt.

Before the medical staff could even react, Lin Yi was at the passenger door, opening it and lifting Liang Ruoxin out.

"Female patient, approximately 28 years old, suspected acute appendicitis or similar complication. Temporary loss of consciousness, severe pain in the lower right abdomen, high fever," he rattled off to the doctors who rushed out, his voice clear, concise, and professional, not at all like a driver's.

The doctors immediately took over, wheeling Liang Ruoxin into the emergency room. Lin Yi didn't leave right away. He went to the admissions desk, using the information from the Didi app to fill out her initial paperwork. He acted as if it were his own responsibility.

A while later, an older doctor came out, removed his mask, and walked over to Lin Yi. "Are you the patient's family?"

"I'm the one who brought her here," Lin Yi replied.

The doctor patted his shoulder, his eyes full of respect. "You saved her life. It was a ruptured appendix, and peritonitis had already begun to set in. If you had been just ten or fifteen minutes later, I'm afraid even the gods couldn't have saved her. Young man, you did a great job."

Lin Yi just nodded slightly. He glanced through the glass window and saw Liang Ruoxin being wheeled into the operating theater. At that moment, the System's voice rang out once more.

[Emergency Rescue Mission Complete.][Reward for decisive action and outstanding skill: Unlocked Passive Skill "Calm Mind". This skill will help the experiencer maintain optimal composure and judgment in all high-pressure situations.][5-Star Rating from the System. Weekly Task is now 50% complete.]

He didn't stay to receive thanks or wait for the patient's family to arrive. His mission was over. He quietly left the hospital, leaving behind the legend of the mysterious Didi driver who had won a race against death.
