Chapter 1 - The Last Straw

"Ren Suzuki"

A very annoying voice filled the hot summer air. One that was amused and disgusted at the same time.

Smack!!!

The sound of the bully smashing his fist onto his hand echoed throughout the dark alley.

The alley was long and dark. One end stood a fat and muscular boy. And on the other stood a lanky boy with medium black hair and deep blood red eyes.

That lanky boy was 15-year-old Ren Suzuki, and he was about to get his daily ass beating.

"What did I tell you about sitting next to me Bitch."

An amused smirk appeared on the bully's face. All while walking towards the emotionless Ren Suzuki.

"Look, I'm sorry, ok, but I can't just change the seating chart."

Ren Suzuki said hint of defiance in his voice.

The defiance didn't seem to register with the oaf of a bully as he kept moving forward. It was like he was ignoring Ren altogether and focusing on one thing, fulfilling his urge to beat the shit out of someone weaker than him.

"Your voice annoys me, shut it pussy."

Before long, the bully was in Ren's face, looking down at him.

"What a freak, no wonder you are called the high school demon with those red eyes of yours."

Ren clinched his fist, digging his unkept nails into the skin of his palms. Blood dripped from his hands as he looked up in defiance.

"Every day I beat you to a pulp, and yet every day that look is the same."

The bully smiled with an unnatural amount of amusement.

"Yet every day in the end, that look turns into a blood-covered masterpiece of my creation."

Ren was used to this now, but in the beginning, he felt intense fear. But the defiance remained. Over time, the fear went away, and soon he was even numb to the pain.

Thud!

The bully balled up Ren's shirt and threw him against the hard, rough brick wall with great force.

"ack!"

Blood exited Ren's mouth with great force, spraying onto the bully's face, causing his smile to widen.

Although the fear and pain had dissipated, one thing Ren never tried was fighting back. He knew it was pointless and was too weak to prevail, so he just took it with anger and defiance in his veins.

"Demon blood is a magnificent sight; it matches perfectly with your demon eyes. Which parent is the demon, I wonder? Is it your whore of a mother or bum of a father?"

A laugh from the bully echoed throughout the alley.

Ren grabbed the wrist of the bully who held his shirt.

Ren could tolerate many things, but his parents were a line that the bully was yet to cross. And an urge that Ren had not felt since the beginning, overwhelmed him, and that was to fight back.

"That face is new, I think I like this one better."

The bully tightened his grip on Ren's shirt, causing his nails to dig into Ren's chest. Then he pulled Ren forward and forced him into the wall again, but harder, causing Ren to let go.

"Then again, this face can lead to problems, so I'll make sure to beat you, so you never think of making it again."

The bully let go of Ren's shirt, then, with great speed, grabbed his black hair. Then, with extreme force, he pulled his head down and with his knee opposite to the one pulling Ren's hair, he kneed him square in the face.

Crack!

Ren's nose instantly broke on the bully's knee.

Ren could smell the damp concrete from the earlier rain and the warm blood dripping from his nose. But he felt no pain. No fear.

Ren grabbed the bully's ankle and tried his hardest to make the behemoth fall, to no success.

"It seems I struck a nerve today, you're not the one to fight back, this is getting quite fun."

The bully lifts his foot, still in the grasp of Ren, and slams it on his head with all his strength. But unlike last time, his hand remained.

"Stubborn fucker"

Again, the bully slams his foot into Ren's head with a grunt of power. But still in an act of defiance, Ren managed to hang on to the bully's ankle.

Despite newfound reasoning to fight, it didn't change the fact that Ren was too weak.

Blood ran down Ren's head, burning his eyes as blood dripped into them.

Before the bully could continue his assault, a loud booming voice filled the alley.

"In my paradise, I don't see this very often."

The voice was soft and calm while also commanding attention like that of a leader.

The bully turned towards the voice, but before he could see who it was, a knee flew straight into his face, causing it to nearly implode into his skull. Blood splattering everywhere.

Thud!

The bully was instantly knocked out, causing him to go limp and fall to the ground.

"What pathetic bastard."

The man extended his hand to Ren.

Ren looked up, straining to open his eyes, burning from the blood, but before he could make out what the figure looked like, he passed out.

Ren's eyes opened to the night sky.

There was no one in the alley anymore, just him.

'Damn it, I need to get home.'

Ren got up fast and threw his backpack on his back. His knees were wobbly from the beating that took place during the day.

The alley was nearly pitch black now, but Ren was used to the layout by now, due to it being the designated beating spot.

'Who the hell was that, and why would that person save me?'

Ren's thoughts alternated between that and the words his parents told him if he were to be beaten one more time.

' "Ren, if you come home like this one more time, we are going to move you away from here for your protection." '

Ren understood where they were coming from, but it still concerned him that he had lived in the area he is living in now his whole life. He'd have to leave everything he knew and adapt to something unfamiliar.

After a good 30 minutes of barely walking, Ren finally made it to the entrance of his house, where his father stood arms crossed.

His father had the same black hair, but it was significantly longer, and the same deep red eyes. But his body was the most different thing about him compared to his son; he was tall and muscular, like someone who had trained his body for many years.

"Father, sorry for being so late."

Ren attempted to go around his dad like nothing had happened unsuccessfully.

"Son, you were beaten again, weren't you?"

His voice was soft and concerned.

Ren struggled to look his father in the eye.

"Yes"

Ren's father's expression saddened, and he placed his hand on Ren's shoulder gently.

"You're going to live with your cousin Kaito in Rakuencho starting tomorrow. Pack your bags, this was the last straw, son, I'm sorry."

Ren was a defiant person, especially to those who treated him poorly, but never to his parents. He did not question his father. He did as he was told.

Ren walked past his father, who turned around to follow. He placed his hand on the cold brass doorknob and closed his eyes, and took a deep breath.

Slowly, he turned it and opened the large wooden door.

Standing in front of the two of them was a woman with beautiful, long black hair that wasn't as black as her husband's and sons'. Her eyes were a deep golden color that was very rare, and her body was as perfect as it could be.

She was around the same height as her 15-year-old son, and she looked into Ren's eyes with sadness and worry, with tears beginning to form.

Not many things waivered Ren, but this sight did. And he never wanted to see it again.

"Mom, I..."

Ren tried to form a sentence, but he couldn't.

"I'm so sorry, my poor baby."

Ren's mother hugged him tightly.

He hugged her back.

"Alright, son, it's time."

Ren's father said softly and gently, but with a hint of sadness and worry.

"We're going to miss you, sweety, but it's for the best, your cousin Kaito will keep you safe."

Ren's Mother added.

It happened so fast, but his parents cared too much to keep him in a place to be constantly tormented any longer.
