15 minutes later, the spec-ops team leader ran over. "Director, we haven't found any bodily remains."
"What!" Coulson's jaw dropped in astonishment.
Nick Fury frowned. "Are you saying there's no trace at all?"
The team leader silently shook his head. They had searched meticulously for over ten minutes without finding so much as a drop of blood.
Coulson frowned, muttering to himself, "That's impossible. Jason's power is energy absorption, and we've already calculated its upper limit. The high-explosive warheads on those two Sidewinders should have been more than enough to blow him to pieces."
Nick Fury analyzed, "It seems Jason, or one of his crew, has acquired some kind of teleportation ability."
A teleportation ability! Coulson's expression turned to one of utter shock.
He recalled similar powers from the movies and sighed. "If that's true, eliminating Jason is going to be incredibly difficult from now on. What's even more terrifying is the speed of his development."
"This mission was a failure. Let's pull out. The New York field office can handle the clean-up."
Nick Fury was slightly disappointed but didn't dwell on it. Jason was a tough nut to crack. If he could be eliminated this easily, the government and the military wouldn't have taken such a beating from him in the first place.
As the spec-ops team escorted them back to the helicopter, Coulson asked, "Director, are we returning to HQ?"
Nick Fury thought for a moment. "No. First, we're paying a visit to the New York DEA."
The helicopter lifted into the air as the wail of distant sirens grew closer.
.....
One hour earlier.
To avoid being tailed by the cops, Jason was driving in circles around Queens.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Harley was buzzing with excitement. In just a little while, she would have a superpower of her very own.
"Honey, can you buy me the superpower now?" After holding it in for ten minutes, Harley finally couldn't take it anymore and blurted out the request.
She had the patience of a spoiled brat; when she wanted something, she had to have it right away and couldn't wait a single minute.
Jason glanced in the rearview mirror as he drove. "What's the rush? You already have one picked out?"
Harley nodded. "I want teleportation."
A smile touched the corner of Jason's mouth. "Smart choice," He commended.
Teleportation might not have any offensive capability, but for the organization, it was crucial. With this power, their future operational methods would be fundamentally transformed.
Jason opened the system's light screen to buy the superpower for Harley.
[Ding! Do you wish to spend 50,000 points to purchase the Level 1 superpower 'Teleportation' for your accomplice, 'Harley Quinn'?]
Confirm!
[Ding! Superpower successfully purchased! Remaining points: 79,850!]
Just like with the other two, the moment Harley received the power, her genetic sequence began to reconfigure, and she passed out cold.
Jason turned his head. "David, is there a superpower you want?"
David shook his head. "Not at the moment. I'll think it over when we get back."
Jason nodded. Choosing a superpower was a major decision and definitely required careful thought.
He closed the system shop and turned the wheel, heading for the outskirts of Queens.
There was a winding road in the suburbs that was always deserted, especially late at night. If anyone was tailing them, they'd have to use their high beams, which he'd be able to spot from kilometers away on this road. But if they didn't use high beams, all Jason had to do was take a turnoff, and his pursuer would lose him completely.
A few minutes later, Harley came to her senses.
"How do you feel?" Jason asked.
Harley tapped her dizzy head. "It feels... magical. My ability to analyze space seems to have been greatly enhanced."
Jason didn't understand the technical jargon. "Explain."
Harley turned to look at a cabin on the side of the road. "When I look at that cabin, I can see its dimensions, its entire spatial structure, all laid out in my mind. And if I want to... I can instantly teleport inside."
The words had barely left her mouth when, with a zip, Harley vanished.
"What the—!" Jason's eyes widened in shock, and he nearly drove the car into a ditch.
A few seconds later, zip, she was back, now holding a rusty kitchen knife.
Jason was speechless.
Harley gave an embarrassed laugh. "I was hoping to grab some cash, but the place has been abandoned for ages. All I could find was this kitchen knife."
With that, she opened the window and tossed the knife out.
"Level 1 powers aren't usually that strong," Jason said. "Does your teleportation have any limitations?"
Harley closed her eyes, recalling the information that had flooded her mind and analyzing her recent attempt. "Mmm... The maximum range for a single jump is one kilometer. The weight and volume of whatever I'm moving can't be too great. I have to visualize the destination in my mind—the clearer the image, the more accurate the jump. And using it consumes a lot of physical energy."
A thousand meters! He thought. That's a bit pathetic. Oh well, no need to rush things. One step at a time.
Just then, David, who had been silent in the back seat, suddenly remembered what Guzman had said. He spoke up quickly, "Boss, Guzman told me that a mysterious agency called the 'Strategic Homeland Defense, Attack and Logistics Support Bureau' has taken over all matters involving our organization."
"Heh, it is Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division so S.H.I.E.L.D.," Jason said, suddenly laughing at the thought of Stan. He then told the other two what he knew about the agency.
After hearing Jason's explanation, David grew even more concerned. "This S.H.I.E.L.D. contacted Guzman and trained his gang in special tactics, but other than that, they've been completely silent. I'm worried they're hiding in the shadows, plotting something."
Jason's smile faded as he seriously pondered David's words. If S.H.I.E.L.D. hadn't been involved, there would be nothing suspicious about how smoothly the mission went. But they had been in contact with Guzman. They knew Jason was coming. And knowing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s M.O., they would have set an ambush. They wouldn't just resort to a half-assed measure like giving some last-minute training.
If S.H.I.E.L.D. was involved, they had to be planning some bigger conspiracy. The thought put Jason on edge.
Suddenly, a tremendous roar echoed from the dark sky. Through the rearview mirror, Jason saw a point of light hurtling toward them.
A missile!
Every hair on Jason's body stood on end. He let go of the steering wheel and grabbed Harley and David. "Harley! Get us out of here! NOW!"
Startled by Jason's terrified expression, Harley reacted instantly, activating her new power.
In the exact instant she activated her ability, the two missiles struck the car.
BOOM!
Searing flames engulfed the vehicle, launching it into the air where it disintegrated into a million pieces.
