My life flashed before my very eyes.
Me, sitting in my tiny room, half-eaten instant noodles beside my bed, controller in one hand, novel in the other.
Scrolling through a new chapter of that novel I had just bought, mindlessly ignoring the dishes piling up in the sink.
I was alone. Always alone.
Ever since my parents got transferred abroad when I was in middle school, I had gotten used to a life of solitude.
Anime, games, novels — repeat.
Even when I entered high school, I blended so well into the background that my presence was barely noticed.
Compared to Adrian, the hottest guy in the whole school, the dreamboat, I was the definition of forgettable.
Average looks, average grades, average life — average everything.
Sitting at the farthest corner of the class, by the window, the breeze brushed past my face every school day.
And now… here I was, standing in some cathedral full of stained glass and beautiful women dressed like nun cosplayers.
Now… an extra hero?
I shook my head as the Pope beamed at us, trying to shake off the swirling thoughts.
"I was thinking how twenty Mage Sisters of the Holy Order were able to summon two otherworlders.
The goddess must have blessed us with two heroes!"
The Pope's confused look softened and a smile beamed on his face.
As expected of someone who asked for one but received two.
In his eyes, he had been given an extra gift — blessed by this goddess entity.
'He seems like a good guy. Wait, am I supposed to be thinking about that?'
My mind drifted back to the novel I was reading — I had barely scratched the surface when I was summoned.
But I still remembered the important characters introduced in the chapters I had read.
Even the Mage Sisters of the Holy Order, an organization tasked with summoning Heroes in the Leon Kingdom.
'Which means I'm in Leon Kingdom right now.'
Hero summoning was an ancient and perilous magic, one that only the most skilled high-ranking mages could perform.
To summon a single hero from another world, minimum of twenty Archmages were required to pull such feat off.
And after this action, it would take another twenty years before they could use the powerful magic.
It was never used lightly, called upon only when the Kingdom's proud armies and legendary knights found themselves powerless against a threat too great to conquer.
When all else failed, the people turned to the desperate ritual of summoning a hero from another world.
The Dragon Empress was the main antagonist of the novel.
Since I was in the early chapters, I didn't know if they were human or dragon.
But I remembered that many commanders were sent to destroy cities and kingdoms, then ruled over the people.
These commanders were true dragons, obliterating defiant kingdoms and cities with powerful breath.
I glanced at Adrian.
'Wait a minute, does that mean Adrian is the main character? The one supposed to slay the Dragon Empress…?'
My heart skipped a beat. I was partly thankful I knew his behavior, at least roughly.
I might have been someone whose presence went unnoticed in class, but I spent my time studying everyone.
But it seemed I wasn't the only one, judging by how Adrian had remembered my name within moments of our encounter, he must have studied everyone too.
That itself was surprising, since my presence was barely noticed in the class.
But considering Adrian's way of life, as someone who wanted to be seen and worshipped by everyone, he seemed to know the class to its depth. Perhaps even the whole school!
"Your Holiness!!!"
My thoughts were abruptly cut off by the loud trembling voice that suddenly echoed off the large tiled hall.
I looked up. A knight clad in full armor rushed into the hall, his metal plates glinting like moonlight on still water.
"A royal knight."
My mind spun, trying to guess what would happen next.
My knowledge of the main casts was superficial, I hadn't read far enough.
The knight stopped in front of the Pope, knelt, and bowed quickly.
"The princess is on her way here, Your Highness!"
Princess. Right. There had to be a princess.
I remembered reading about her in the early chapters.
What was her name again?
Oh… Princess Lousielle, the daughter and only child of King Alveron Leonis IV.
She was described as a beautiful hardworking sixteen-year-old, skilled with a sword…
The youngest to ever attain the rank of a Holy knight at the age of twelve.
Holy Knight was the rank below the peak of knighthood— [Arch Knight]. This meant she was a sword genius!
And her attitude, she hated being looked down on for being a girl. Cold and proud, desperate to prove her worth.
She was a reliable leader, at least that was what the people of this kingdom thought of her.
She was even the one who had orchestrated the plan of hero summoning even though the dragons threat hadn't reached the kingdom.
'The ice princess trope, huh?'
I rubbed the back of my head as we waited for the princess to arrive.
The pope clapped his hands together, trying to look dignified but still jittery. I remembered the princess didn't tolerate mistakes.
She was the type who loved doing everything exactly as planned, with precision — no procrastination. The perfect opposite of me.
The Pope, in his panic, quickly turned to us, his face plastered with a servile expression. He knew he didn't want to offend us, the so-called heroes.
"As hero-class otherworlders, we know you will both have powerful skills and the blessings of the goddess. But for the sake of the princess, we shall use status magic to display your gifts."
Whoa, Skills!
My eyes sparkled at the mention of skills, would I got to wield some powerful ability? I was so excited that I couldn't wait.
But the blessing of the goddess, when I remembered that I had not met any goddess, my stomach churned.
I heaved a heavy sigh, I had crossed over worlds, that was what mattered.
And in some Isekai webnovels I had read, whether the otherworlder met a goddess or not, they normally got some cool ability.
The Pope clasped his hands together, as if seeking our approval.
He appeared to be caught in the middle; he had no idea what kind of heroes we were, perhaps an impatient and irritable bunch.
And he certainly did not want to offend the princess, so he had to act in the most pleasing manner possible.
"I am not bothered. We will wait for the princess, right, Rei?"
Adrian turned to me in a way that made me cringe.
'Will you stop flaunting, please?!'
'Why did I have to get stuck with him?'
I swallowed a lump and nodded quickly. I had been summoned along with the main character.
There was nothing I could do except wait and see where this went.
