Chapter 15 - Chapter Fifteen

After seeing Madeline off, Brighton immediately had patrol cars sent to find Andy's twin sister and bring her in. He wanted to find her before Madeline reached out to her and tell her he would look for her. He didn't want her to come up with a story or to run and hide.

While the patrol officers were off looking for Jessica, Brighton called the house and fill the group in on what he had learned so far.

Maggie answered the phone and was shocked to learn that Brighton had excluded Madeline as the culprit. She was even more shocked when he had her put him on the speakerphone so he could tell all of them at once about learning that Andy was a twin.

"I'm a twin? I never knew!" exclaimed Andy. "Where is my twin?"

"I have a patrol out looking for her right now," Replied Brighton.

"I need to meet her! Now!" said Andy. "I want to come down to the station right away. I want to be there when you bring her in. How do we make that happen?"

"That is not a good idea, Andy. I need to focus on getting her to confess to all of this mess." Brighton said, as he fidgeted in his chair back at the station.

Andy insisted, and Brighton agreed, that they should come to the police station. He arranged for a van to come and pick them up and bring them into the station. Everyone at the house quickly got dressed and was ready to go to the police station. The tension was palpable as they waited for the van to arrive.

The two police officers on duty took the dogs out back for a quick potty break before they all left the house without knowing how long they would be gone. When the van arrived, they verified the driver was who they expected and then guided the residents out into the garage and into the van. The ride to the police station took about twenty minutes.

The van pulled into the parking garage; security then escorted Maggie and her friends to Brighton's office after they checked in at the front desk.

Brighton was waiting for them when they arrived and showed them into the conference room where there was enough room for everyone to have a seat around the large table. He quickly and quietly filled them in on the meeting he had with Madeline Monahan earlier and the search for Jessica Barlow. One of the patrol teams that was out looking for her had checked her apartment and found it empty. She hadn't been there in days. A second team went to her listed place of employment and learned that they had fired her the day before because she had been absent from work for the last four days. He had an unmarked car sitting on Madeline's place keeping watch in case she shows up there looking for a place to stay.

"Everyone has her picture and is on the lookout for her. It's the best we can do at this point." Said Brighton.

"You don't have her yet? Does she know you are looking for her?" Asked Maggie.

"I don't know. It depends on whether or not Madeline is in touch with her or not." He replied.

"Crap! What if she comes after us again now that she knows we know who she is?" Asked Amelia.

"That's why you are still staying in the Safehouse, so she can't get to you," Brighton answered quickly. "We will keep you safe until this is over and we know you are truly, fully safe."

"What does my sister look like?" Asked Andy quietly.

Brighton handed him a copy of the DMV photo they had of Jessica. Andy sat there and stared at the photo. It was odd looking at a total stranger that was as familiar to him as if he were looking at himself in the mirror. He had such a sense of having met her before that he felt faint. It was so strange.

"I feel like I've seen her before. I don't know where, but I have a feeling that I've met her somewhere." Andy said as he looked at the photo.

Maggie looked at the photo and had the same feeling. "I think I've met her too! Probably at the college." added Maggie.

Brighton decided it was time to get them back to the Safehouse before anything happened that would compromise their welfare. Even though they were in a police station, he wanted them back in a place where they would be safe and sound.

The van was waiting for them in the garage to take them back to the house. They reluctantly agreed to go back and wait for further developments in the case.

As the van pulled out of the garage, a small, dark sedan followed them at a safe distance. The driver of the van didn't notice they were being tailed and drove directly to the Safehouse, taking no special precautions to protect the undisclosed location of the house. When the van pulled into the two-car garage, the little sedan pulled over three houses up the block and watched the house.

Maggie walked into the kitchen and got a soda, then headed to the living room and grabbed her book. On the sofa, with her book, she tried to relax, but memories of Jessica Barlow's face distracted her. She couldn't stop trying to figure out where she had seen her before. Was it at the college or somewhere else? She had a vague memory of answering a question for her. Perhaps it was at the career fair. The same day, she reconnected with Andy. Was Jessica there and watching them when they first talked at the career fair? Has she been watching them this entire time?

That Jessica had been watching her since the career fair made Maggie equally frightened and angry. She wasn't sure if she should tell Andy of her suspicions. Would he feel the same way? Would he be able to confirm that they saw her at the fair?

"Andy, I think I remember where I saw Jessica. I think she was at the career fair the day we reconnected." Said Maggie as Andy came into the living room.

"Oh, man! That's it! She came up to my table and asked about the type of jobs we had available. I filled her in on what we had open, and she left." Said Andy.

"She was watching you that day and saw the two of you talking. That's when this all began!" Added Amelia.

The three of them sat in the living room and rehashed how the day of the career fair had unfolded. Maggie recounted the timeline of the day and when she first ended up going to the table where Andy was sitting and got to talk to him. She also went over when they sat in the breakroom near her office and ate lunch together, where they exchanged phone numbers.

Jessica wouldn't have known about their exchanging phone numbers until Andy texted Maggie and Michael's malware, which he had put on Andy's phone, transferred to hers. Maggie realized that was when she ended up on Jessica's radar.

Down the street, the little sedan sat, watching the quiet house. The driver sat up straight in her seat behind the wheel and watched and planned their next move. How could they get into the house with two police officers in there with Maggie, Andy, and Amelia?

As night fell, the lights in the house came on and the driver noticed that all the shades were closed in the entire house. There was no way for them to sneak up and peek in to see what was going on. So, they waited for the house to go dark.

As the evening wore on, Maggie and Andy sat and chatted as they played with the dogs in the living room. They talked about what they would like to do together once all of this was over. They decided they would like to go on a proper date, perhaps to dinner and a movie. Making plans for a normal evening together made both of them happy for the first time since all of this started.

When all the residents went to bed, the lights in the house had gone out some, but there were a few lights still on for the police officers on duty. After an hour, the driver quietly snuck up to the house and went into the backyard to look for a way into the house so that the police wouldn't notice if they were in the kitchen or living room. They found the door to the dining room and a door to the back hallway that would lead to the bedrooms. The driver monitored the movements of the police within the house, so they would know where they were throughout any hour.

When they knew an officer had just visited the back hall, they went to work on picking the locks. There were three different locks on the door, and it took them a while to work through each of them.

Once they had them unlocked, they quietly made their way into the hall and looked into each of the bedrooms. They found the one Andy was sleeping in and walked over to his bed. Looking down at Andy, they wanted to brush his hair out of his face. They refrained from touching him.

On the bedside table, they left a toy car from Andy's childhood bedroom in his family's Oregon home. After putting the little car on the table, the driver silently slipped out of the bedroom and back out of the back door. They quickly relocked the three locks and crept out of the backyard.

The next morning, when Andy woke up, he made his way to the bathroom to take a quick shower. When he returned to his bedroom, he noticed something different about the nightstand next to his bed. He sat on his bed and stared at the table and realized there was a little toy there. It took him a moment to realize it looked exactly like the one that was in his bedroom back in his parents' home. The car had been a gift from his parents when he turned eight years old. It was a special edition of a race car for a driver he had been a fan of.

Andy quickly got dressed and hurried out to the kitchen and grabbed a police officer and made him go to his bedroom with him. He showed him the car and explained that it hadn't been there when he went to bed.

They call Brighton right away and then checked the house to find how anyone could have gotten in. The officers had been sitting near the sliding glass door when not doing a patrol of the house, so they knew the culprit couldn't have gotten in that way, which left the door by the bedrooms.

When they went into the yard and examined the outside of the door, they saw little nicks where someone had picked the locks.

When Brighton arrived, he had already made arraignments to have them moved to a different location. Everyone started packing right away. Knowing that Jessica had been in the house the night before, they all wanted out of there as quickly as possible. Brighton and the two officers packed up the food.

When the van arrived, everyone was ready to go. They climbed in and left the little house. The driver took extra precautions to avoid being followed to the new location. The drive, if taken directly there, would have taken about 15 minutes, but with his roundabout route, it took them over 45 minutes to get to the house.

This house was a fair bit bigger than the first place they were staying in, so they each got their own room. While Maggie, Amelia, and Andy settled into their rooms, Brighton made calls to find out the whereabouts of Madeline and Jessica over the last 24 hours. He felt disappointed by the information he received. No one had eyes on either woman over the last 24 hours. They still hadn't even found Jessica at all.

Madeline had given her tail the slip shortly after leaving the police station the day before. She must have known that she was being followed the moment she left the station and made a point of losing her tail.

Brighton didn't know which of the two women had been in the house, even though everyone in residence believed it was Jessica. Officer Brighton remained unconvinced.
