Having bid Cynthia farewell, Sam walked to the Celestic Laboratory under the sunny mid-morning.
The comfortable building was quiet as ever, full of dusty books, scrolls, and research tools.
But the moment he entered, a voice he recognized rang out.
"Sam!" Professor Carolina smiled at him from the other side of the room, her eyes aglow with enthusiasm.
Sam approached, smiling back at her.
"Where's that little girl?" Carolina inquired teasingly, obviously asking about Cynthia.
"She said she'd be at Lily of the Valley for a while," Sam answered.
"To care for League business. And undergo some special training."
Carolina smiled, shaking her head in affection.
"Let her go, then. The Champion's work is never done."
Then, without hesitation, she seized Sam's arm and drew him towards her private office.
"Come with me, I have something wonderful to show you!"
Sam let himself be pulled in, already feeling the excitement emanating from her.
In the office, Professor Carolina produced a collection of ancient papers, creased scrolls and rock rubbings inscribed with crude script.
Her glasses reflected sparks behind them.
"Thanks to you, we at last cracked the ancient Hoenn papers received from Steven Stone!" she declared, voice racing with enthusiasm.
"And what we discovered is. Marvelous."
She spoke more quietly and drew in closer, eyes sparkling.
"These archives tell the tale of a great entity, a god which slumbers beneath Hoenn's hottest volcano."
Sam was already aware of where this was heading, but on her behalf, he went along, nodding with interest.
Professor Carolina's voice dropped once more, full of thespian intrigue.
"The god that governs the very ground itself. Do you recognize its name?"
Sam drew an eyebrow, pretending confusion.
The Professor paused dramatically.
"It's named. Groudon!"
Sam blinked and nodded in mock shock, but secretly he added with a smile:
'And it's also referred to. the Earth God That Can't Fly.'
"It's said that when Groudon comes to life," she went on, "the sun gets hotter. The earth starts burning… and the ground itself stretches wider with each step it takes."
She tapped one of the ancient stone rubbings on the desk.
"These ancient texts are probably the missing links that bridge Hoenn's primal energy legends. With further research, we may find truths never written about in recent history."
Her gaze grew gentle as she looked at Sam.
"And all of this was due to you."
Her admiration wasn't praise, it was sincere.
Professionally, Sam was already her best student.
Beyond that, she'd raised him as a grandson.
In life and study, Professor Carolina had always respected his confidence and curiosity.
Sam smiled softly.
Then, after a pause, he added, "By the way, Grandma… if there's nothing urgent at present, I'd like to go on a journey."
Professor Carolina blinked with surprise, then nodded seriously.
"Oh? Unraveling ancient text wasn't sufficient adventure for you?" she teased.
Sam laughed. "I've conquered the ancient language now."
"I believe it's time I saw the world."
Professor Carolina slumped back in her chair and let out a contented sigh.
"Sounds sensible to me," she said.
"The rest of the research is standard now, we've cracked the code."
She rose, placing her hand lightly on his shoulder.
"Everyone ought to see the world at least once," she said warmly.
"There are Pokémon out there that aren't in books. Adventures that can't be read about in scrolls."
Sam nodded, immensely thankful.
"I'll return with whatever I can find. Clues, artifacts, old rocks, whatever will be of use to you."
"Just come back to me in one piece," she said, smiling.
They stood there in a moment of silence, the room charged with the musty smell of worn paper and sunlight.
A new page was turning.
Having completed his conversation with Professor Carolina, Sam emerged from the Celestic Laboratory and drew a lungful of the cool mountain air.
The peaceful streets of Celestic Town greeted him as always, the wind bearing the delicate smell of herbs and moss-kissed stone.
It was time.
Time to go back home, gather his equipment, and embark on the world.
He took only a few steps before a sudden beep resonated within his mind.
A soothing mechanical voice followed.
[Trainer System Loaded.]
Sam's eyes flashed with excitement.
The Novice Gift Pack has been delivered. Would you like to open it?]
He didn't delay. "Open it!"
The system acted promptly.
[Congratulations, host. You have acquired: "Eye of Detection.]
[Remark 1: Enables an in-depth look into any Pokémon's complete Attributes, type, power, and evolution potential.]
[Remark 2: Also enables partial look into a human's emotional status—namely their thoughts and feelings for the host.]
[Congratulations, host. You have acquired: Rare Candy ×20.]
[Note: Every Rare Candy will raise a Pokémon's level by 1. Can be used up to Champion level.]
[Congratulations, host. You have received: Steel Gem ×1.]
[Note: An extraordinary crystal that enhances the potential and growth speed of Steel-type Pokémon if appropriately utilized.]
Sam blinked as a new tab appeared in his mind, the system interface suspended like a virtual screen only he could perceive.
Inside it, the treasures were neatly organized in a system warehouse: radiant Rare Candies piled crisply, a transparent silver jewel glowing with light, and the newly activated "Eye of Detection" symbol flashing.
He smiled.
"The system is. ridiculously generous," he said to himself with shining eyes.
This was it, the start of an actual journey.

But a long way from Sinnoh, in the upper stratosphere over the Hoenn Region, something stirred.
Above the clouds, above the troposphere, inside the ozone layer itself, where no ordinary creature could ever hope to go, an ancient protector slowly stirred.
A humongous snake-like figure, more than a hundred meters in length, bathed in streaks of radiating green light.
Its emerald scales glittered with celestial brightness.
Double horns crowned its slender dragon face.
When its golden eyes opened, a shiver of power shook the atmosphere like a quiet storm.
Rayquaza.
The Sky Pillar Guardian.
The Soaring Lord of the Skies.
The Legendary Dragon of Hoenn, who controlled the winds and calmed the conflict of land and sea.
The air itself shook as the ancient deity of the heavens woke from sleep.
It blinked once and looked through the layers of space and weather.
Across a vast distance.
Across the mountain and the ocean.
Across the heavens themselves.
And it saw him.
Sam, still strolling through Celestic Town, down below in the far-off Sinnoh Region, utterly oblivious to the notice he had attracted.
Rayquaza's gaze was narrowed, and an ancient idea reverberated across the skies.
"So you've awakened."
"My Inheritor."
The wind screamed back, its gusts racing across continents.
Something was starting.
And nothing would ever be the same.
